    Abstract:

    A microphysics-agnostic meta-model of rotational glitches in rotation-powered pulsars is developed, wherein the globally averaged internal stress accumulates as a Brownian Process between glitches, and a glitch is triggered once a critical threshold is surmounted. Precise, falsifiable predictions are made regarding long-term event statistics in individual pulsars. For example, the Spearman cross-correlation coefficient between the size of a glitch and the waiting time until the next glitch should exceed 0.25 in all pulsars. Among the six pulsars with the most recorded glitches, PSR J0537$-$6910 and PSR J0835$-$4510 are consistent with the predictions of the meta-model, while PSR J1740$-$3015 and PSR J0631$+$1036 are not. PSR J0534$+$2200 and PSR J1341$-$6220 are only consistent with the meta-model, if there exists an undetected population of small glitches with small waiting times, which we do not resolve. The results are compared with a state-dependent Poisson Process, another microphysics-agnostic meta-model in the literature. The results are also applied briefly to recent pulse-to-pulse observations of PSRJ0835$-$4510, which appear to reveal evidence for a negative fluctuation in rotation frequency just prior to the 2016 glitch.

    Our computational economic analysis investigates the relationship between inequality, mobility and the financial Accumulation Process. Extending the baseline model by Levy et al., we characterise the economic Process through stylised return structures generating alternative evolutions of income and wealth through time. First, we explore the limited heuristic contribution of one and two-factors models comprising one single stock (capital wealth) and one single flow factor (labour) as pure drivers of income and wealth generation and allocation over time. Second, we introduce heuristic modes of taxation in line with the baseline approach. Our computational economic analysis corroborates that the financial Accumulation Process featuring compound returns plays a significant role as source of inequality, while institutional arrangements including taxation play a significant role in framing and shaping the aggregate economic Process that evolves over socioeconomic space and time.

    Abstract Central Asian loess deposits record the evolution of aridification across the Asian interior. However, paleoclimatic proxies are strongly influenced by the variation of the dust source and Accumulation Process. In order to decipher the paleoenvironmental changes, a sensitive paleoclimatic proxy with clear source and Accumulation Process will be needed. In this study, heavy mineral assemblages and sedimentation rates were investigated in a 30-kyr loess section in the Ili Basin, Xinjiang, northwestern China. During Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2, trends in dust sedimentation rate were similar to those of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), in anti-phase with Northern Hemisphere Summer Insolation (NHSI) at 65°N. Amphibole/epidote ratios (contents and mean grain size) were low during cold phases, such as the late Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Heinrich Event (H) 1; their ratios were higher during adjacent warm periods; this was attributed to aeolian sorting during transportation. Namely, greater sorting between amphibole and epidote occurred in warmer phases, and weaker sorting occurred in colder phases. The amphibole/epidote ratio could serve as a proxy for wind intensity, and thus the Siberian High (SH) intensity. Amphibole/epidote ratio was a more appropriate proxy to record wind intensity than dust sedimentation rate which was also influenced by sediment availability. A higher amphibole/epidote ratio corresponded to a more negative East Asian stalagmite δ18O, indicating an anti-phase relationship between the SH and East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) during the MIS 2.

    Abstract:

    This study investigates the early fatigue damage of cross-ply carbon/epoxy laminates. The aim is to unfold the damage Accumulation Process, understand the interaction between different damage mechanisms, and quantify their contribution to stiffness degradation. Tension-tension fatigue tests were performed, while edge observation and DIC technique monitored the damage evolution. It was found that different Accumulation Process and interactive levels between transverse matrix cracks and delamination exist for specimens with similar stiffness degradation. A linear increase of stiffness degradation was observed with the increase of matrix crack density, while the growing trend of stiffness degradation converged with the increase of delamination.

    Abstract:

    Abstract This paper investigates the loading rate effect on both mechanical properties and damage Accumulation Process of [0°2/90°4]S carbon fiber-polymer laminates under tensile loading. In-situ edge observations, Acoustic Emission and Digital Image Correlation techniques were utilized simultaneously to monitor the state of damage in real time. Results showed that the axial modulus and strength were less sensitive to loading rates than failure strain, which increased with the decrease of the loading rate. In the viewpoint of damage Accumulation Process, high density and uniform distribution of transverse matrix cracks, and H-shape crack patterns, incorporating inter-laminar cracks, were more likely to occur at low loading rates while variable crack spacing occurred at higher rates. When loading rates were lower than a certain level, maximum transverse matrix crack density decreased slightly due to the restriction of relatively widely generated inter-laminar cracks. Furthermore, the cumulative acoustic emission energy of low-frequency signals was linearly correlated to transverse matrix crack density, providing a promising way to quantify crack Accumulation in real time. Finally, spatial consistence was observed between transverse matrix cracks at edges and stress concentrations at the exterior 0° ply, and the peaks of axial strain at local concentration regions locate either near the newest cracks or at the place with minimum crack spacing.
