    Co-Authors: Harstad Gyrd
    Abstract:

The pine weevil Hylobius abietis is the most severe pest of modern forestry in Northern Europe. Insecticides have been used for a long time to control damage on conifer regeneration, but increased awareness of the use of chemicals and its impact on the environment has called for new methods. In this study I have registered biotic and abiotic variables on cleatcuts in an attempt to determine which areas that are more susceptible to pine weevil damage than others. Such knowledge can be used to plan and execute harvesting in ways that reduce the impact of the pine weevil. In the beginning of May 2011, the experiment was established in 190 subplots in 10 clear-cuts in the municipalities of Ringsaker and Løten in Hedmark County. Biotic and abiotic variables were registered on seedling level within subplots, plot level within clear cuts and clear-cut level. The proportion of attacked seedlings ranged from 11 % to 68 % between clear-cuts and mortality from 3 % to 27 %. Some clear-cuts were exposed to injuries and mortality due to other factors than the pine weevil, such as browsing by moose, hare and mouse. The cumulative largest proportion of damage and mortality on a single clear-cut caused by pine weevils and other factors were 95 % and 75 % respectively. The best statistical model was selected for predicting the number of beetles on the clear-cuts, the likelihood of attack by pine weevils, the severity of damage and the likelihood of mortality given attack, using the Akaikes Information Criterion with correction (AICc). The main result of this study was that two-year old M95 and M60 seedlings were less susceptible to attack by the pine weevil than 1-year old M95 seedlings, especially in areas with sparsely to medium vegetation cover, on sites with better H40 site index, and if plants was planted in proximity to a stump. Seedlings planted in proximity to a stump also had less feeding damage on the stem. Increased feeding increased seedling mortality, especially in areas with high soil moisture and with increasing distance from the forest edge. No relationships were found between growth and the likelihood of attack, degree of injury, mortality or growth of seedlings the subsequent growing season. There was also no relationship between the plants growth the subsequent year after attack. This study shows that prediction of attack, severity of damage and mortality within a certain area can be achieved with statistical models

    2012
Co-Authors: Marina Telles Marques Da Silva
    Abstract:

Nesting is a critical step on birds life cycle, since nest predation is high all over the world. Predation influences the population dynamics, the community structure and the life history of birds. Birds evolved anti-predatory strategies, which include selection of safer places for nesting. Here we intent to: (i) analyze habitat characteristics selected by adults, and (ii) evaluate the influence of these elements on nests success, and fitness consequences to individuals. We studied the Lesser Elaenia (Elaenia chiriquensis), a migratory bird that breeds in Brazilian Savannas. We conducted the study between 2010 e 2011 in a 100 ha area in the Estação Ecológica de Itirapina, a protected area in São Paulo state, were the Lesser Elaenia is abundant along its breeding season (September to December). We analyzed habitat selection comparing characteristics of used and available patches. We made all tests using chi-square tests, analysis of variance, paired t-tests and permutation tests. We used program MARK to evaluate the influence of all of the parameters on nests success. We created a set of models that included temporal and a set of environmental parameters and used Akaikes Information Criterion to evaluate the adjustment of each model to our data. Adults apparently selected anemochoric plants, with larger crowns and more lichen flakes on stalks, but did not show preference for specific plant species. Individuals also preferred patches with high plant density and high density of Aspidosperma tomentosum, the most used plant as nest substrate. Contrary of our expectations, none of these characteristics influenced nests success. However, some parameters not evaluated for selection, influenced the offspring survival. Vegetation density on nest sites was the most important variable, probably because it helps concealing nests and parental activities. Nest age and time along the breeding season were also important elements and both reduced nests success. Nest predation, habitat selection, and their consequences to the fitness are complex and are related to many variables. The present study contributed with the knowledge on this subject in tropical areas

    2006
Co-Authors: Eduardo Pagel Floriano, Ivanor Müller, César Augusto Guimarães Finger, Paulo Renato Schneider
    Abstract:

    2012
Co-Authors: Railma Maria Vilanova Rocha Queiroz
    Abstract:

The aim of this work was to study age, growth and reproduction of the margined flyingfish Cheilopogon cyanopterus in the area of the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago (SPSPA, Brazil), where this species has a relevant ecological role, acting as an important link in the epipelagic food chain. During the years 1995 to 2009, were captured mainly by light attraction 4094 specimens. To estimate age and growth was analyzed lapilli otoliths microstructure of 277 individuals, where the number of microstructures ranged from 14 and 383 to individuals with 4.6 to 36.1 cm FL. The known-age method was employed for validation of microstructures deposition periodicity, demonstrating a daily formation starting from hatching (Students t-test, df = 1 tsa = 0.7973; tsb = 0.9729; p = 12,7). Pairs of age-length data were fitted to four growth models: von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, Logistics and Richards. Based on Akaikes Information Criterion and Akaike weight, the Gompertz model best described C. cyanopterus growth, explaining 91.5% of growth for the species. The following parameters were derived for that model: L∞ = 30.4; k = 0.014 e a = 2.53. The reproductive aspects were described using macro and microscopic analysis of the gonads. The analysis of gonadal indices indicated that the spawning season occurs between October and May, with peak March. The total fecundity and Batch fecundity ranged from 24670 to 77409 and 2618 to 66961, respectively, with average of 2.2 lots eliminated during the reproductive period. The maturation occurs in individuals of 22.05 cm CZ with 90 days of age. Histological analysis of gonads showed that 28% of females were mature/hydrated and 72% spawning. The concomitant presence of different stages of oocyte development in histological sections of the gonads which allowed the development of oocytes classified as synchronous in more than two groups, and as batch spawning
