    Statement of the Problem: Camper's plane is widely used to orient occlusal plane in edentulous patients, but the most reliable posterior reference point of Camper's plane is controversial. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the most reliable posterior reference point of Camper's plane in relation with hamular notch-incisive papilla (HIP) plane with change in gender of edentulous subjects. Materials and Methods: The study was performed on 20 males and 20 females in the age group of 50-65 years. The conventional method of primary and secondary impression making was followed. The deepest point of the right hamular notch and the center of the incisive papilla was marked with an indelible marker on the master casts. Two spherical metal ball bearings of 3.1 mm were attached to the cast at the marked points, using cyanoacrylate resin. Autopolymerizing acrylic resin was adapted over the cast to construct the temporary denture base. Three spherical metal ball bearings were attached to superior, middle, and inferior part of the tragus and one at the Ala of Nose. A lateral cephalogram was made placing the temporary denture base in position intraorally. Cephalometric image analysis was done using Adobe Photoshop CS5. Results: Descriptive statistics of the data showed, in males, Camper's plane with superior point on tragus has a mean score of 8.71 ± 4.45, with middle point on tragus has 4.35 ± 3.17 and an inferior point on tragus has 4.01 ± 2.23. In females, Camper's plane with superior point on tragus has a mean score of 5.65 ± 2.64, with middle point on tragus has mean score of 2.71 ± 2.51, and inferior has 5.72 ± 3.09. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that in males, Camper's plane with posterior reference point as inferior border of tragus was the most parallel to HIP plane and in females, middle border of tragus was most parallel as the posterior reference point of Camper's plane in relation to HIP plane.

    Abstract:

    PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to decide the most appropriate point on tragus to be used as a reference point at time of marking Ala tragus line while establishing occlusal plane. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The data was collected in two groups of subjects: 1) Dentulous 2) Edentulous group having sample size of 30 for each group with equal gender distribution (15 males, 15 females each). Downs analysis was used for base value. Lateral cephalographs were taken for all selected subjects. Three points were marked on tragus as Superior (S), Middle (M), and Inferior (I) and were joined with Ala (A) of the Nose to form Ala-tragus lines. The angle formed by each line (SA plane, MA plane, IA plane) with Frankfort Horizontal (FH) plane was measured by using custom made device and modified protractor in all dentulous and edentulous subjects. Also, in dentulous subjects angle between Frankfort Horizontal plane and natural occlusal plane was measured. The measurements obtained were subjected to the following statistical tests; descriptive analysis, Student’s unpaired t-test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. RESULTS. The results demonstrated, the mean angle COO (cant of occlusal plane) as 9.76°, inferior point on tragus had given the mean angular value of IFH [Angle between IA plane (plane formed by joining inferior point-I on tragus and Ala of Nose- A) and FH plane) as 10.40° and 10.56° in dentulous and edentulous subjects respectively which was the closest value to the angle COO and was comparable with the values of angle COO value in Downs analysis. Angulations of Ala-tragus line marked from inferior point with occlusal plane in dentulous subject had given the smallest value 2.46° which showed that this Ala-tragus line was nearly parallel to occlusal plane. CONCLUSION. The inferior point marked on tragus is the most appropriate point for marking Ala-tragus line.     Statement of problem: Correct orientation of the occlusal plane plays a vital role in achieving optimal aesthetics, occlusal bAlance and function of complete dentures. The use of Ala tragus line for determination of occlusal plane has been a topic of debate over past many years. Also, the effect of age on level of Ala tragal line has not been investigated in the past. Purpose: To determine the effect of age on location of Ala-Tragus line. Materials and Methods: A total of 180 patients (90 males and 90 females) were selected with complete dentition and were grouped according to their age in three age groups with 60 subjects in each age group (Group A: 20-35 y, Group B: 36-50 y, Group C: 51-65 y). Right lateral profile photographs were taken with subjects having fox plane placed intraorally parallel to occlusal plane. Reference points corresponding to inferior border, middle or superior border of tragus and inferior border of Ala of Nose were marked on photographs. These were joined to get three different levels of Ala-Tragus line. Images were analysed photometrically and most parallel relationship was determined in between arms of fox plane (that represented the occlusal plane) and three different levels of Ala tragus line. Data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis using Pearson chi-square and Likelihood-ratio chi-square test. Results: Significant correlation was found between age and level of Ala-Tragus line. The occlusal plane was found to be more parallel to Ala-tragus line when inferior border of tragus was considered as posterior reference point in young adult age group (20-35 y). In older age groups, occlusal plane was found to be more parallel to Ala-tragus line when middle of tragus was considered as posterior reference point. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that a definite relationship exists in between age and level of Ala tragus line.
