    'Universitas Gadjah Mada', 2015
Co-Authors: Irvani Irvani, Wilopo Wahyu, Karnawati Dwikorita
    Abstract:

Indonesian government through the NationalAtomic Energy Agency has planned to build anuclear power plant. One of the proposed sitesis in West Bangka Regency, Bangka BelitungArchipelago Province. The engineering geologyof this area is, however, not fully understood andrequires further investigations. Engineering geology investigations were carried out by assessing therock mass quality and Bearing capacity based onfield observation and drilling data. The assessmentwas conducted using Rock Mass Rating (RMR)and Geological Strength Index (GSI) classifications. The rock masses in the study area were dividedinto four units, namely units of sandstone, granite, mudstone and pebbly sandstone. The RMR andGSI values in the study area were influenced by theparameters of discontinuity space density, the slopeof discontinuity orientation, grade of weatheringand groundwater conditions. The assessment showsthat the granite unit had the best quality which wasshown by a 53 average RMR value and 66 GSIvalue. Based on the average RMR value, the graniteunit was estimated to have cohesion value between0.2 and 0.3 MPa, friction angle between 25° and35°, and Allowable Bearing Pressure between 280and 135 T/m2. Based on the GSI value, the graniteunit was estimated to have uniaxial compressivestrength value between 1.0465 and 183.8 MPa, ten-sile strength between (-0.0122) and (-5.2625) MPa,rock mass strength values between 24.5244 and220.351 MPa, and modulus of deformation withina range of 1.73 - 86.68 GPa. The Granite Unit wasconsidered to be the most appropriate location forthe nuclear power plants

  • performance of a two tier geosynthetic reinforced segmental retaining wall under a surcharge load full scale load test and 3d finite element analysis
    Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 2008
    Co-Authors: Chungsik Yoo, Sunbin Kim
    Abstract:

Abstract This paper presents the results of a full-scale load test and a 3D finite element analysis on a two-tier, 5 m high, geosynthetic reinforced segmental retaining wall (GR-SRW) subjected to a surcharge load aiming at investigating the response of the GR-SRW to various levels of surcharge load. The results of the load test at working stress condition revealed that the GR-SRW's response to the test load was well within the serviceability limits, and that the currently available design guideline tends to over-estimate the surcharge load-induced reinforcement forces. The predicted results for the surcharge load well in excess of the test load indicated that the surcharge load-induced reinforcement strains exponentially decrease with depth, showing a good agreement in qualitative terms with that assumed in the FHWA design guideline. The predicted wall deformation at the Allowable Bearing Pressure of 200 kPa was within the serviceability level demonstrating an excellent load carrying capacity of the GR-SRW. Design implications and the findings from this study are discussed.

  • STRENGTH CHARACTERIZATION OF FOUNDATION SOILS AT FEDERAL UNIVERSITY LOKOJA BASED ON STANDARD PENETRATION TESTS DATA
Faculty of Engineering University of Nigeria Nsukka, 2017
    Co-Authors: Ja Sadeeq, Ab Salahudeen
    Abstract:

Strength characteristics of foundation soils in the Permanent site of the Federal University Lokoja in Kogi State were evaluated based on standard penetration test (SPT) results using some conventional analytical models proposed by different researchers. The study was carried out in order to take precise engineering decisions on the type of foundations suitable for the proposed structures and to determine the optimal depth of foundation embedment.  The SPT N-values were first corrected to the standard average energy of 60% (N60) before they were used to correlate soil properties. Evaluation of the soil properties were done at foundation embedment depths of 0.6, 2.1 and 3.6 m. Results show that Bearing capacity generally increased with boring depth. Based on the Meyerhof Allowable Bearing Pressure estimation method, foundation Pressures in the range of 150 – 600  kN/m2 were evaluated for use in the study area at shallow depths (depths in the range of 0.6 - 3.6 m).http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v36i3.

  • INVESTIGATION OF SHALLOW FOUNDATION SOIL Bearing CAPACITY AND SETTLEMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF MINNA CITY CENTRE DEVELOPMENT SITE USING PLAXIS 2D SOFTWARE AND EMPIRICAL FORMULATIONS
    'African Journals Online (AJOL)', 2017
    Co-Authors: Ab Salahudeen, Ja Sadeeq
    Abstract:

This study investigated the soil Bearing capacity and foundation settlement characteristics of Minna City Centre development site using standard penetration test (SPT) data obtained from10 SPT boreholes at 0.6, 2.1 and 3.6 m depths to correlate soil properties. Evaluation of foundation Bearing capacity and settlement characteristics for geotechnical preliminary design of foundations was carried out using some conventional empirical/analytical models and numerical modelling. The aim was to investigate and determine the geotechnical parameters required for adequate design of Physical structures of the proposed Minna City Centre, at Minna the capital of Niger state. The SPT N-values were corrected to the standard average energy of 60% (N60) before the soil properties were evaluated. Using the corrected N-values, Allowable Bearing Pressure and elastic settlement of shallow foundations were predicted at 50 kN/m2 applied foundation Pressure. The numerical analysis results using Plaxis 2D, a finite element code, shows the analytical/empirical methods of estimating the Allowable Bearing Pressure and settlements of shallow foundations that provided acceptable results. Results obtained show that an average Bearing capacity value of 100 – 250 kN/m2 can be used for shallow foundations with embedment of 0.6 to 3.6 m on the site.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v36i3.

  • Evaluation of Bearing capacity and settlement of foundations
    AcademicDirect, 2016
Co-Authors: Bunyamin Anigilaje Salahudeen, Ja Sadeeq
    Abstract:

The standard penetration test (SPT) results (SPT N-values) used in this study were corrected to the standard average energy of 60% (N60) before using them to correlate soil properties and evaluate foundation settlement characteristics and Bearing capacity in the North Central zone of Nigeria. Based on the corrected N-values, some geotechnical design parameters including the Allowable Bearing Pressure and elastic settlement of foundations were predicted at varying applied foundation Pressures of 50, 100, 200, 300 and 500 kN/m2 using conventional analytical models and numerical modelling. The numerical analysis results using Plaxis 2D, a finite element code, shows that Meyerhof’s and Peck’s et al. analytical/empirical methods of estimating the Allowable Bearing Pressure of shallow foundations provide acceptable results. Results obtained show that an average Bearing capacity value of 150 – 350 kN/m2 can be used for shallow foundations at embedment depth of 0.6 to 3.6 m in the North Central zone. Based on recommendation of Eurocode 7 which allows a maximum total settlement of 25 mm for serviceability limit state, it is recommended that raft or deep foundations to be considered for applied foundation Pressures exceeding 300 kN/m2 in the North-Central zone to avoid excessive settlement
