  • high Bandwidth measurement of partial discharge current pulses
IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation, 1998
    Co-Authors: M D Judd, O Farish
    Abstract:

This paper presents the first measurements of partial discharge current pulses captured using both a high Analogue Bandwidth and an extremely fast sampling rate. These pulses are of interest because when they occur in gas insulated substations they generate UHF signals that can be used to detect internal defects. A special test cell was designed to enable direct measurement of particle generated pulses under conditions similar to those present in high voltage gas insulated apparatus. The Analogue Bandwidth of the measurement system is in excess of 4.0 GHz and the single-shot sampling rate is 102.4/spl times/10/sup 9/ samples s/sup -1/. A signal processing scheme used to compensate the measured pulses is described. Results presented show individual current pulses from moving particles in SF/sub 6/. The measurements demonstrate that the pulse widths and risetimes are shorter than has previously been established.

  • application of the drs chip for fast waveform digitizing
Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research Section A-accelerators Spectrometers Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2010
    Co-Authors: S Ritt, R Dinapoli, U Hartmann
    Abstract:

Abstract The high demands of modern experiments in fast waveform digitizing led to the development of a whole family of switched capacitor arrays (SCA), called the Domino Ring Sampler (DRS). The most recent version, DRS4, is produced in a radiation hard 0.25 μm CMOS process, and is capable of digitizing 9 differential input channels at sampling rates of up to 6 Giga-samples per second (GSPS) with an Analogue Bandwidth of 950 MHz (−3 dB). The channel depth can be configured between 1024 and 8192 cells, and the signal-to-noise ratio allows a resolution equivalent to more than 11 bits. Using an interleaved sampling technique, sampling rates up to 48 GSPS are possible. Compared with the previous versions, the DRS4 chip contains several improvements such as an on-chip PLL for sampling-frequency stabilization and various mechanisms to reduce the read out dead-time. The high Bandwidth, low power consumption and short readout time make this chip attractive for many experiments, replacing traditional ADCs and TDCs. This includes time-of-flight detectors, cosmic gamma ray observatories, PET scanners and industrial applications.

  • results from a prototype 6gsps digital to Analogue converter with greater than 7 ghz Analogue Bandwidth
European Microwave Integrated Circuits Conference, 2016
    Co-Authors: A Glascottjones, Marc Wingender, Francois Bore, M Stackler, N Chantier, K Salmi, P Coquille, M Martin, V Monier, G Wagner
    Abstract:

Designers of Microwave systems are constantly looking for DACs which provide not only Nyquist zones larger than 2.5 GHz but which also offer flat frequency response in these large instantaneous Bandwidths, and in addition which also generate these signals with a centre frequency that is in the frequency band of interest. The component's performance can have strong implications in how microwave systems such as radar, communication systems and instrumentation systems are designed. This paper presents a prototype of a high speed, high Bandwidth Digital to Analogue Converter with high sample rate and high output Bandwidth which enables the direct conversion of signals to frequencies up to 10GHz with instantaneous Bandwidths of up to 3GHz. It describes the component structure, applications for the component and prototype results are given.
