  • “... you can't say to anyone to their face: your paper is rubbish.” Max Planck as Editor of the Annalen Der Physik
    Annalen der Physik, 2008
    Co-Authors: Dieter Hoffmann
    Abstract:

Max Planck's place in the history of the Annalen Der Physik, which spans some two hundred years, can be characterized as unique. Planck not only published the majority of his own scientific papers in this periodical but was also connected to it personally in various editorial positions. Thus for over half a century, from 1894 until 1947, he contributed decisively toward its promotion as a leading international professional journal of moDern physics. This paper documents Planck's diverse relationships with the Annalen Der Physik and analyzes his editorship against the backdrop of the evolving physics in the first quarter of the 20th century.

  • Productive conservatism: Planck's second theory of radiation
    Annalen der Physik, 2012
    Co-Authors: Massimiliano Badino
    Abstract:

Since the first months of 1910, Max Planck began to think that his theory of radiation developed in 1900, albeit confirmed by all experimental measurements, was “plagued [. . . ] by a remarkable flaw”.1 After two years of intense work, changes of tack, doubts, and rethinking, Planck completed his second theory of radiation, which was published in a mature form on the pages of Annalen Der Physik exactly one hundred years ago.2 In the introduction to the paper, Planck summarized the requirements that a satisfactory theory of radiation should fulfill: it must be (1) free of internal contradictions and (2) as close to the core of classical electrodynamics as allowed by the necessity of the quantum hypothesis. As Planck’s 1900 theory is mostly valid still today and it is at the very foundations of quantum physics, the moDern reaDer cannot help being baffled by Planck’s effort. To unDerstand why his celebrated first theory did not comply the requirements given above, we have to move a step backwards.

  • The restructuring of Annalen Der Physik in 2012
    Annalen der Physik, 2011
    Co-Authors: Ulrich Eckern, Guidio Fuchs
    Abstract:

At the end of this year, and with the end of my almost 14 years of service as Editor-in-Chief of Annalen Der Physik (AdP), the journal will unDergo significant changes. From January 2012 onwards the journal will be run directly by the publisher with an in-house editorial team. There is not only a change in editorship, but also a profound restructuring of the journal, such that AdP will be completely relaunched in 2012. The changes refer to the content, layout and staffing. The Editorial Board members Friedrich W. Hehl, Bernhard Kramer, Gerd Ropke and Andreas Wipf will continue to serve for AdP as Honorary Advisory Board members. They will be joined by Ingo Peschel who is now Advisory Board member, and myself. Ingo Peschel, for example, has been crucial and very supportive in difficult times, right after the German reunion, when the 8th series was started in 1992, but also later when Bernhard Muhlschlegel handed over the editorship to me in March 1998. I am most grateful to my editor colleagues for their commitment, enthusiasm and support over all those years of hard work. The support by the members of the Advisory Board should be acknowledged as well. Last but not least, I wish to thank the staff at Wiley-VCH for their continuous support, and for the excellent cooperation at all times. From January 2012 I will hand over my responsibilities to the designated Editor-in-Chief Guido W. Fuchs, who previously served as Managing Editor for this journal since 2009. I hope that you will continue to support him, and the Annalen, in the years to come.

  • The need for peer review in academic publishing
    2012
    Co-Authors: J.e. Mitchell, A. Le Roux
    Abstract:

Peer review of articles is an integral part of academic publishing, in fact, articles that have not unDergone rigorous peer review are often regarded as not having scholarly merit. However, it is only since the middle of the twentieth century that it has become a measure of academic excellence and quality control. It is interesting that an article by Albert Einstein published in the 1905 issue of Annalen Der Physik was not peer reviewed. The journal's editors, Max Planck and Wilhelm Wien, simply published the new ideas proposed in the article. They were certainly 'peers' of Einstein (both also won Nobel prizes) and therefore their opinions were sufficient. While editors are usually specialists in a particular field, it is rare for them to be experts in every aspect of a discipline, as were Planck and Wien.
