The literature data on the reproductive morphophysiology these animals need more descriptions and interpretations, which varied probably because of specific physiological characteristics of each species, and the differences in eating habits and social. For example, we have the gestational period which varied widely between species of Anteaters (85- 190 days) and sloths (120-378 days). Furthermore studies on the behavior and ecology of these species are needed to establish comparisons between animals kept in captivity with free life, to optimize assisted reproduction techniques and improve reproductive rates, since some species are on the list of endangered species. This review adhered to reports about isolated cases or small groups of animals described in the last century.

However, in the subgroup containing the Anteaters, data are very limited. The present study aims to elucidate the nature of the feto-maternal interface in the Anteater placenta and to interpret these data within an evolutionary context. Methods: Placentas of two species were investigated with histology, immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. Results: Remnants of the maternal vessel endothelium were absent, resulting in a fully haemochorial barrier throughout the placenta. Two structurally different parts, the villous and trabecular areas were complex and intermingled. In particular, the trabeculae which consisted of cellular, proliferative trophoblast, associated with connective tissue, were attached to the decidua. The villi contained fetal capillaries and hypertrophied mesenchymal cells that occured near the surface near the end of gestation. The surface of the villi consisted of flat, syncytial trophoblast, interspersed with proliferative trophoblast cells. Conclusions: Based on fundamental differences between Anteaters and armadillos, we inferred that placental evolution was more complex than previously thought. The haemochorial pattern of Anteaters was likely an ancient condition of xenarthrans. Consequently, villous placentation may be attributed, at least in part, by convergent evolution, but was also characterized by some features that were widespread among xenarthrans

The importance of anthropogenic effects in habitat use and territory size of Northern Anteater-chats Myrmecocichla aethiops near Amurum Forest Reserve, Jos-Plateau, Nigeria

Territory location in birds is often determined by availability of nesting habitat and we investigate whether this is the case for the little-studied Northern Anteater-chat Myrmecocichla aethiops. Territory size and location were mapped over two months in 2012 at 25 different sites where the birds occurred in central Nigeria and compared to 25 random sites where they did not, 500 m away. Vegetation variables, invertebrate abundance indicators, anthropogenic variables (availability of nest sites) and bird community components were measured and compared with adjoining areas (500 m away) from which the birds were absent in order to determine important factors determining territory location and size. Territories were 1.23 ha (SE 0.14) in size and were widely separated and so non-contiguous. Increasing numbers of abandoned wells, ant nests and termite mounds increased the probability of territory occupation. Territory size increased with the number of Anteater-chats but decreased with increasing number of ant nests and overall bird diversity that were probably proxies for habitat quality. Overall, choice of preferred areas for the Northern Anteater-chat was centred on nesting sites and then habitat quality and group size probably determined territory size.PostprintPeer reviewe

Patrones espaciales, temporales y apreciaciones sociales asociados al atropellamiento de hormigueros (Xenarthra: Vermilingua) en la vía Marginal de la Selva, Colombia

En Colombia los trabajos dirigidos a estudiar esta problemática se han enfocado en determinar la mortalidad de fauna silvestre, especialmente en las regiones andina y atlántica. En el caso de la Orinoquía colombiana, estudios han evidenciado el atropellamiento de 77 especies incluyendo a Myrmecophaga tridactyla y Tamandua tetradactyla, estos registros constituyen la primera aproximación a la problemática de atropellamiento de hormigueros en esta región, esta circunstancia, genera la necesidad de generar más información, que permita determinar el impacto de esta problemática sobre esta y otras especies en la región. Este trabajo pretende identificar y describir los patrones espaciales (referentes a características del paisaje), temporales (referentes a épocas climáticas) y apreciaciones sociales (punto de vista de la comunidad) asociados al atropellamiento de hormigueros. Se registraron datos de atropellamiento vehicular para M. tridactyla y T. tetradactyla, en un tramo de 260 km perteneciente a la vía Marginal de la selva; para determinar las variables espaciales asociadas a los registros de atropellamiento, se delimitaron cuadrantes de 250 m de largo y 2 km de ancho y se relacionó la información de los muestreos con las coberturas adyacentes utilizando una regresión logística. Para determinar si las variables temporales están asociadas al atropellamiento, se calcularon dos índices kilométricos expresados en tasa de mortalidad por día y tasa de mortalidad por kilómetro para cada especie a lo largo del estudio y para cada época climática, utilizando el software SIRIEMA- Road Mortality Software V. 2.0. Para conocer la opinión de los la comunidad se establecieron tres grupos de muestreo: conductores de carga pesada (CP), conductores de transporte público (TR) y usuarios de la vía (U) y se encuestaron 120 personas. Se registró un total de 87 atropellamientos, 20 para M. tridactyla y 67 para T. tetradactyla. Las tasas de atropellamiento T. tetradactyla (0,9045 ind/día) fueron mayores que las de M. tridactyla (0,27 ind/día), además no se presentaron variaciones en las tasas de atropellamiento relacionadas con la época climática. La variable de “Distancia al Casco Urbano” fue la que explicó mejor la relación causal de atropellamientos para ambas especies, seguida de la “Pendiente”. Del total de los encuestados, 82% manifestó ser consciente de la problemática y 73% dijo haber visto hormigueros atropellados, además 16 admitieron haber atropellado hormigueros alguna vez (TR= 6, CP= 9 Y U= 1), por otro lado, la comunidad señaló al exceso de velocidad como la principal causa responsable del atropellamiento de hormigueros en la vía y a la señalización como la medida de solución más efectiva.Roads are fundamental element for the socioeconomic development of a region, but they also generate negative impacts on biodiversity, establishing barriers that prevent species movement and affecting their populations. In Colombia some works that were aimed at studying this problem has focused on determining the mortality of wildlife, specially in the Andean and Atlantic regions. In the case of the Colombian Orinoquía, studies have shown the collision of 77 species including Myrmecophaga tridactyla and Tamandua tetradactyla, these records constitute the first approach to the problem of roadway mortality of Anteaters in this region. This work pretend to identify and describe spatial patterns (referring to landscape characteristics), temporal patterns (referinf to climatic seasons), and social appreciations (community point of view) associated with the roadway mortality of Anteaters. Roadkill data were recorded for M. tridactyla and T. tetradactyla, in a stretch of 260 belonging to the Marginal of the jungle highway; To determinate the spatial variables associated with the traffic collision record, quadrants of 250 m long and 2 km wide were delimited and the information of the samplings was related to the adjacent coverages using a logistic regression. To determine if the temporary variables are associated with road collisions, two kilometic indexes were calculated, expreseed in the mortality rate per day and the mortality rate per kilometer for each species throughout the study and for each climate season, using the SIRIEMA-Road Mortality Software V.2.0. To know the opinion of the community, three sampling groups were established: heavy load drivers (CP), public transport drivers (TR) and road users (U) and 120 people were surveyed. An amount of 87 collisions were recorded, 20 for M. tridactyla and 67 for T. tetradactyla. The roadkill rate T. tetradactyla (0.9045 ind / day) were higher than those of M. tridactyla (0.27 ind / day), and there were no variations in the rates of roadkill relatd to the climatic season. The variable "Distance to the Urban Zone" was the one that best explained the causal relationship of roadkill for both species, followed by the "Slope". From the total of the people that were asked about their opinion concerning roadkill, 82% said they were aware of the problem and 73% said they had seen roadkill Anteaters, in addition 16 recognized having crashed with a Anteater at some time (TR = 6, CP = 9 YU = 1), by the way, the community pointed "speeding up" as the main cause responsible for the collision of Anteaters in the road and road sign as the most effective solution measur
