In particular, Anthocyanosides have been investigated for their effect on blood vessels and in ophthalmology. At present, pharmaceutical proprietary products containing standardized extracts from V. myrtillus fruits are available for the therapy of alterated conditions of capillary fragiliy and permeability and for the normalization of some ophthalmological disorders.

the effect of combination of chamomile and Anthocyanoside on bleomycin induced pulmonary fibrosis in rat
Revista Publicando, 2018Co-Authors: Seyed Alireza Emami, Iraj JavadiAbstract:Background: The study attempts to reveal and compare the effect of using Chamomile, Anthocyanoside and their combination, as anti-inflammatory agent to ameliorate, to prevent or control the development of fibrosis due to Bleomycin (BLM). Methods: Male wistar rats weighting 180-220g were assigned to specific groups. 20 rats were divided to five comparable groups, as (1) saline group, (2) BLM group, (3) Chamomile group, (4) Anthocyanoside group, (5) combination of Anthocyanoside and Chamomile group. Rats of each group received intratracheally 1U/100g of BLM. Inhibitor agents were given as pretreatment and treatment. Each animal received a daily intraperitoneal injection of its treatment. Then, after 3 week, OH-prolin, fibrosis percentage, body weight and lung weight were measured for each rat. Results: BLM treated groups significantly lost weight during first 5 days. Then, the process moves slower and there were some weight gains except in BLM group. In other words, after that, treatments , groups gained weight compared to BLM group. Also, compared to positive control group, OH-prolin was reduced to 49.6%, 69.8% and 78.7% in Chamomile, Anthocyanoside and combination group, respectively. As pathological analyses showed fibrosis of Chamomile and Anthocyanoside were reduced to 62.6% and 67.6% respectively and it was also, in combination group, reduced to 84.1%. Conclusion: It was concluded from the present study that administration of combination of Chamomile and Anthocyanoside lead to a reduction in Bleomycin-induced tissue fibrosis. The mechanism of suppression is possible through inhibition of immune and inflammatory systems and as inhibitory of fibroblast activity and synthesis of polypeptides.

Iron is a crucially important factor in free radical production and cytotoxic activity of bleomycin. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study attempts to study, and compare, the effect of using Chamomile, Anthocyanoside and their combination, as anti-inflammatory agent to ameliorates, to prevent or control the development of fibrosis due to Bleomycin (BLM). to prepare pulmonary fibrosis model, male Wistar rats weighting 180-220g were assigned to specific groups Rats of each group received intratracheally 1U/100 g of BLM. 20 rats were divided to five comparable groups, as(1) BLM group, (2) saline group, (3) Chamomile group, (4) Anthocyanoside group, (5) combination of Anthocyanoside and Chamomile group. It was concluded from the present study that administration of combination of Chamomile and Anthocyanoside lead to a significant reduction in Bleomycin-induced MDA. CONCLUSION The mechanism of the effect of these combinations is possibly the result of phenolic combinations as antioxidant and oxy free radical scavenger and inhibitor of lipid peroxidation.

Anthocyanosides of vaccinium myrtillus bilberry for night vision a systematic review of placebo controlled trials
Survey of Ophthalmology, 2004Co-Authors: Peter H Canter, Edzard ErnstAbstract:We have systematically reviewed placebo-controlled trials of V. myrtillus-extracted Anthocyanosides for evidence of positive effects on night vision. Searches of computerized databases and citations in retrieved articles identified 30 trials with outcome measures relevant to vision in reduced light. Of these, 12 were placebo-controlled. The 4 most recent trials were all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and were negative in outcome. A fifth RCT and 7 non-randomized controlled trials reported positive effects on outcome measures relevant to night vision. Negative outcome was associated with more rigorous methodology but also with lower dose level and extracts from geographically distinct sources that may differ in Anthocyanoside composition. Healthy subjects with normal or above average eyesight were tested in 11 of the 12 trials. The hypothesis that V. myrtillus Anthocyanosides improves normal night vision is not supported by evidence from rigorous clinical studies. There is a complete absence of rigorous research into the effects of the extract on subjects suffering impaired night vision due to pathological eye conditions. Evidence from methodologically weaker trials and auxiliary evidence from animal studies, trials of synthetic Anthocyanosides, and a recent randomized controlled trial of Ribes nigrum (black currant) Anthocyanosides may warrant further trials of V. myrtillus Anthocyanosides in subjects with impaired night vision.
