    Abstract:

    The aim of this Anthropometric Survey was to map regional differences in height and body proportions in eight counties adjacent to the Adriatic coast of Croatia. Body height was measured in 1,803 males and 782 females aged 17-20 years at 66 schools in 23 towns. When corrected for population size in regions, mean male height is 182.6 cm in all eight counties, 182.8 cm in seven counties of Adriatic Croatia, and 183.7 cm in four counties of Dalmatia proper. Regional variation is considerable: from 180.6 cm in the county of Karlovac to 184.1 cm in the county of Split-Dalmacija. The mean height of females is based on more limited data (168.0 cm in seven counties). These results show that young men from Dalmatia are currently the tallest in the world in the age category of 18 years, and the north-to-south gradient of increasing stature on the Adriatic coast largely mirrors that in neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The extraordinary values of height in Croatia and BiH can most likely be explained by unique genetic predispositions that are shared by the local populations of the Dinaric Alps.

    The aim of this Anthropometric Survey, conducted between 2015 and 2016 in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), was to map local geographical differences in male stature and some other Anthropometric characteristics (sitting height, arm span). In addition, to investigate the main environmental factors influencing physical growth, the documented values of height would be compared with available nutritional and socioeconomic statistics. Anthropometric data were collected in 3192 boys aged approximately 18.3 years (17-20 years), from 97 schools in 37 towns. When corrected for population size in the examined regions, the average height of young males in BiH is 181.2 cm (181.4 cm in the Bosniak-Croat Federation, 180.9 cm in Republika Srpska). The regional variation is considerable-from 179.7 cm in the region of Doboj to 184.5 cm in the region of Trebinje. These results fill a long-term gap in the anthropological research of the Western Balkans and confirm older reports that the population of the Dinaric Alps is distinguished by extraordinary physical stature. Together with the Dutch, Montenegrins and Dalmatians, men from Herzegovina (183.4 cm) can be regarded as the tallest in the world. Because both nutritional standards and socioeconomic conditions are still deeply suboptimal, the most likely explanation of this exceptional height lies in specific genetic factors associated with the spread of Y haplogroup I-M170. The genetic potential for height in this region could then be the greatest in the world. Future studies should further elucidate the roots of this intriguing phenomenon, which touches an important aspect of human biodiversity.

    Objective: The objectives of this study were to estimate the quantity and nutritive quality of the complementary diet in rural Malawi, and to identify feeding practices, nutrients and dietary modifiers of iron and zinc bioavailability that may limit the quality of the diet. Design: This cross-sectional study design included an Anthropometric Survey, a feeding practices questionnaire, and an interactive, 24 h recall dietary data Survey. Setting: Four rural villages in Balaka district, southern Malawi. Subjects: Mothers resident in the study communities with breastfed children aged up to 24 months were eligible. Results: Stunting was prevalent among these weanlings. Maize was the predominant food source, with limited contribution of animal foods. Deficits in dietary energy and several nutrients were found when compared to estimated needs. When expressed per kg body weight, energy intakes appeared adequate. The bioavailability of zinc was low due to a high phytate:zinc molar ratio. Iron bioavailability was also low due to low intake of absorption enhancers such as meat/fish/poultry protein and ascorbic acid. Dietary quality was poorest for 6 to 8-month-old infants. Conclusions: Iron, zinc and calcium were the most limiting nutrients to the quality of the diet, partly exacerbated by the poor bioavailability of iron and zinc.     Abstract:

    Millions of workers in China rely on respirators and other personal protective equipment to reduce the risk of injury and occupational diseases. However, it has been >25 years since the first Survey of facial dimensions for Chinese adults was published, and it has never been completely updated. Thus, an Anthropometric Survey of Chinese civilian workers was conducted in 2006. A total of 3000 subjects (2026 males and 974 females) between the ages of 18 and 66 years old was measured using traditional techniques. Nineteen facial dimensions, height, weight, neck circumference, waist circumference and hip circumference were measured. A stratified sampling plan of three age strata and two gender strata was implemented. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the possible effects of gender, age, occupation and body size on facial dimensions. The regression coefficients for gender indicated that for all Anthropometric dimensions, males had significantly larger measurements than females. As body mass index increased, dimensions measured increased significantly. Construction workers and miners had significantly smaller measurements than individuals employed in healthcare or manufacturing for a majority of dimensions. Five representative indexes of facial dimension (face length, face width, nose protrusion, bigonial breadth and nasal root breadth) were selected based on correlation and cluster analysis of all dimensions. Through comparison with the facial dimensions of American subjects, this study indicated that Chinese civilian workers have shorter face length, smaller nose protrusion, larger face width and longer lip length.

    Abstract : This report presents results of a comprehensive Anthropometric Survey of U.S. Army Soldiers (ANSUR II), completed in 2012 by the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center. Goals of the Survey were to acquire a large body of data from comparably measured males and females to serve the Army s current design and engineering needs, as well as those anticipated well into the future. Ninety-four directly measured dimensions, 39 derived dimensions, and three-dimensional (3-D) head, foot, and full-body scans were obtained on each subject in this study. The sample consisted of 7435 men and 3922 women. This includes Active Duty, National Guard, and Army Reserve Soldiers. Results of the directly measured dimensions are given here in the form of summary statistics, percentile data, and frequency distributions. Also included are well-illustrated descriptions of the measurements and of the landmarks used to define them; an explanation of the manual and 3-D procedures used in the study; demographic data characterizing the sample in terms of its racial/ethnic, gender, age, geographic, and occupational distribution; comparative statistics showing changes in the body sizes of Army personnel since the last large-scale Survey in 1988; and, a detailed explanation of how observer error was calculated for this study to ensure optimum reliability. The sampling strategy (rationale and execution) is detailed in an appendix. Other appendices include information on the comparability of the measurement techniques used in this Survey with those used in other large-scale military Surveys, visual indices to help readers locate dimensions with unfamiliar names, and a cross-reference table to help readers accustomed to locating dimensions by number.

    Abstract : Virtually every Army materiel system in use was designed and/or sized using a database of Anthropometric information that is 20 years old. It was based on the Army Anthropometric Survey (ANSUR), which was conducted in 1988 on only Active Duty Soldiers. However, more than one-half of today's fighting forces are National Guard and Reserve component troops. A pilot study (ANSUR II) was recently undertaken to (1) assess Anthropometric change since 1988 within the Active Army; (2) to assess Anthropometric differences among Army Active, Reserve, and National Guard components; and (3) to provide guidance on whether a further, more comprehensive Survey and an update of the current ANSUR database are needed. This report provides measurement methods and summary statistics for 25 body measurements made on 2811 male and 651 female soldiers in the pilot study. The Anthropometric change since 1988 and tests of component differences are presented in a separate technical report. The subjects were weighted by component, sex, age, and racial/ethnic group to match Total Army demographics as of March 2007 in order to provide interim design guidance on Total Army body size distributions as of March 2007.

    Abstract:

    The adverse effects of interobserver error on morphometric population comparisons are well documented in the literature. While interobserver error can rarely be avoided, it can be minimized by having a single individual locate and mark relevant landmarks, by limiting the number of observers for each variable, and by reviewing repeated measures data daily to catch and correct measurer drift during data collection. In this study, two pairs of experts participated in interobserver error trials designed to pre-set observer error limits for use in the quality control of a large scale Anthropometric Survey. Repeatability data were also collected twice daily in the field and reviewed with the measurers. Interobserver errors obtained in the field were lower than those achieved by the experts for 27 of 30 dimensions. These results suggest that establishment of permissible interobserver error in advance of data collection and frequent review of repeated measurements during data collection can reduce the magnitude of interobserver error below that obtained by experts measuring in a laboratory setting. However, even differences of small magnitude can be serios when they are directional, and 17 of 30 dimensions exhibited statistically significant bias between measurers despite all quality control efforts. The magnitudes of interobserver error observed in this study have proven particularly useful in evaluating the biological relevance of statistically significant differences which are of relatively small magnitude.

    Abstract : This report presents results of the 1988 Anthropometric Survey of U. S. Army pilots in the form of summary statistics and percentile data. These Anthropometric data are presented for all male pilots measured during the Survey and for a subset of the female data pool who were demographically matched for age and race to the June 1989 U.S. Army female plot population. A total of 132 standard measurements, 60 derived dimensions, and 48 head and face dimensions are summarized in this report. Each dimension is fully described and visual indices are provided to facilitate practical application of the data.
