    Abstract:

    Epidemiological studies have shown an in-verse correlation betweendiets rich in po-lyphenols, flavonoids and reduced risk of cardiovasculardisease. These associationswere mainly ascribed to the antioxidant, antiaggregation and Anticholesterol capa-city of polyphenols. This association has been explained that atherogenesis is ini-tiated by hypercholesterol, lipid peroxida-tion and hyper aggregation platelet. The research was carried out to evaluate anti-oxidant, Anticholesterol and antiaggrega-tion activities of methanol extract and frac-tions of black tea ( Camelia sinensis ). To evaluate antioxidant activity of methanol extract and fractions were compared  with (-)-Epigallocatechine 3-gallate (EGCG), an-ticholesterol activity were compared with simvastatin and antiaggregation activity were compared with aspirin. Antioxidant activity using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hy-drazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging acti-vity at two concentrations 100 µg/mL, 50 µg/mL and Anticholesterol was cholesterol oxidase activity at two concentrations 0.005 µg/mL, 0.0025 µg/mL, the antiag-gregation  activity  used epinephrine (EPN) agonist at two concentrations 300 μM, 75 μM and one concentration 37.1 µg/mL of methanol extract and fractions of black tea. To know the difference of treatment, the data were analysed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and be continued Dun-can’s new multiple range test. The results showed that DPPH scavenging activity were high (88.59-93.556%), the anticho-lesterol showed high activity (93.663-97.434%) and the antiaggregation sho-wed low up to high activity (79.967-4.31%). Using Duncan’s new multiple ra-nge test showed that anti-oxidant activity were not different among extract and fractions of black tea,the highest anti-cholesterol activity was black tea extract 0.005 µg/mL (97.434%) and the highest antiaggregation activity was ethyl acetate fraction on 75 μM EPN agonist (4.310 %), water fraction 37.1 µg/mL with 300 μM EPN agonist (21.833%).

    Abstract:

    Hypercholesterolemia is the main risk factor of atherosclerosis which is directly related to coronary heart disease. Velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens L.) is predicted to have potential Anticholesterolemia since a previous study showed that this plant had high antioxidant activity. The purpose of this research was to determine the Anticholesterol activity of crude extract and ethyl acetate fraction of velvet bean compared to simvastatin and vitamin E in decreasing the plasma level of total cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride and increasing the HDL level on hypercholesterolemic rats. Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into ten groups. Group I was fed with standard diet as negative control group and all the other groups were fed with high-fat diet and were given fructose solution. High-fat diet and fructose solution increased the level of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride and decreased the level of HDL-cholesterol significantly compared to the negative control group. The treatment groups were given 3 various doses of crude extract (50, 100, 200 mg/kgBW) and ethyl acetate fraction (15, 30, 60 mg/kgBW) of velvet bean, simvastatin 2.7 mg/kgBW and vitamin E 60 mg/kgBW daily for ten days. The data were analyzed by one way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan’s Post Hoc Test. The best results were shown by 15 mg/kgBW of ethyl acetate fraction in decreasing total cholesterol and 60 mg/kgBW of ethyl-acetate fraction for the LDL-cholesterol, 200 mg/kgBW of crude extract in increasing HDL-cholesterol and 50 and 200 mg/kgBW of crude extract and 60 mg of ethyl acetate fraction in lowering the triglyceride.

    Abstract:

    Saponins are a diverse group of compounds widely distributed in the plant kingdom, which are characterized by their structure containing a triterpene or steroid aglycone and one or more sugar chains. Consumer demand for natural products coupled with their physicochemical (surfactant) properties and mounting evidence on their biological activity (such as anticancer and Anticholesterol activity) has led to the emergence of saponins as commercially significant compounds with expanding applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical sectors. The realization of their full commercial potential requires development of new processes/processing strategies to address the processing challenges posed by their complex nature. This review provides an update on the sources, properties, and applications of saponins with special focus on their extraction and purification. Also reviewed is the recent literature on the effect of processing on saponin structure/properties and the extraction and purification of sapogenins.

    Abstract:

    Fifteen new multifunctional conjugates were designed and synthesized by chemically linking the steroidal framework of natural occurring γ-oryzanol and γ-oryzanol-derived phytosterols to a wide range of bioactive natural compounds (fatty acids, phenolic acids, amino acids, lipoic acid, retinoic acid, curcumin, and resveratrol). Starting from γ-oryzanol, which is the main component of rice bran oil, this study was aimed at assessing if the conjugation strategy might enhance some γ-oryzanol bioactivities. The antioxidant activity was evaluated through three different mechanisms, namely, DPPH-scavenging activity, metal-chelating activity, and β-carotene-bleaching inhibition. Measurement of the in vitro cell growth inhibitory effects on three different human cancer cellular lines was also carried out, and the potential hypocholesterolemic effect was studied.
