Correlation between plasma clozapine concentration and heart rate variability in schizophrenic patients.

KaschkaAbstract:Forty schizophrenic patients treated with 50-600 mg/day of clozapine as monotherapy and 40 normal control subjects were tested for heart rate variability (HRV) which is mediated by the vagus nerve using acetylcholine as neurotransmitter. As compared to the control subjects, the patients showed essentially reduced HRV parameters which were negatively correlated with the plasma clozapine levels. Therefore, clozapine's Anticholinergic Effect is correlated to the plasma clozapine level when measured by the decrease of HRV. We suggest that HRV data might be useful as a predictor for plasma clozapine levels.

The evidence supports the understanding that saliva plays an important role in masticatory function.

A detailed history was obtained from the female OAB patients at the eye outpatient department. After checking the exclusion criteria, oral trospium chloride 30 mg bd was started. The patients were followed-up in terms of drug Effectiveness and ophthalmic and other side Effects at the 4th and 12th weeks. All procedures were repeated at both of these time-points.Results: The mean age of the patients was 48.98 ± 11.98 years (range 19–75). The data of 80 OAB patients were evaluated in the study. Esotropia in a child treated with a scopolamine patch for drooling.

Recent studies have indicated that, because of its Anticholinergic Effect, the use of a scopolamine patch may help eliminate drooling.1,2 The ease of administration of the patch, coupled with its very low side-Effect Profile, adds to its desirability. However, we want to alert care givers to a problem we attribute to the scopolamine patch. Esotropia developed in one of our patients when scopolamine transdermal patching was done. The esotropia resolved shortly after cessation of patching. CASE REPORT This 4-year-old boy has spastic quadriplegia, a significant developmental delay, a well-controlled seizure disorder, and microcephaly secondary to a neonatal cerebrovascular hemorrhage associated with a protein C deficiency clotting disorder.
