The most common substandard/counterfeit Antimicrobials include beta-lactams (among antibiotics) and chloroquine and artemisin derivatives (among antimalarials). The most common type of substandard/counterfeit Antimicrobial Drugs have a reduced amount of the active drug, and the majority of them are manufactured in Southeast Asia and Africa. Counterfeit Antimicrobial Drugs may cause increased mortality and morbidity and pose a danger to patients. Here we review the literature with regard to the issue of substandard/counterfeit Antimicrobials and describe the prevalence of this problem, the different types of substandard/counterfeit Antimicrobial Drugs, and the consequences for the individuals and global public health. Local, national, and international initiatives are required to combat this very important public health issue.

In particular, counterfeit Antimicrobial Drugs are a threat to public health with many devastating consequences for patients; increased mortality and morbidity and emergence of drug resistance. In addition, physicians treating these patients lose their confidence in the medications used and report high levels of bacterial resistance. The problem with fake and suboptimal medications got worse with the advent of the World Wide Web; a significant proportion of medications that are sold through Internet pharmacies is counterfeit. Various initiatives of the WHO (the International Medical Products Anti-Counterfeiting Taskforce) are hopefully going to tackle this very important public health issue. In this article, we review the available evidence in peer-reviewed articles and World Wide Web information resources regarding the issue of counterfeit Antimicrobials.

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of Antimicrobial Drugs

These correlations have been studied using different approaches including in vitro analyses with constant and fluctuating concentrations and in vivo analyses involving animals and humans. Mathematical analysis includes correlation of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) indices to an outcome parameter. Further insight can be gained by mechanism-based modelling of Antimicrobial drug effects. Methods and results: This review aims to provide an overview on the various approaches used to analyse Antimicrobial pharmacodynamics, to discuss the limitations of these approaches, to indicate recent developments and to summarise the current knowledge on PK-PD target values as derived from human studies. Clappison, Peter DaveyAbstract:A total of 6% of 6,983 households in the United Kingdom had leftover Antimicrobial Drugs, and 4% had standby Antimicrobial Drugs. Respondents with leftover Drugs were more educated, more knowledgeable about Antimicrobial Drugs, younger, and female. Of respondents with leftover Drugs, 44% kept them in case of future need, and 18% had taken these Drugs without medical advice.

Patient compliance with Antimicrobial Drugs: A Chinese survey.

Antimicrobial sensitivity of the pathogen and patient compliance are key determinants of the efficacy of Antimicrobial therapy. Objective In this study, we sought to investigate the factors that affect patient compliance to Antimicrobial therapy in a Chinese teaching hospital to enhance patient compliance and to prevent abuse and misuse of antibiotics by patients. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among patients willing to answer all the questions who were prescribed Antimicrobial Drugs orally, and for whom at least half of the duration of therapy was not under the supervision of a doctor or nurse. Data analyses were performed using Kruskal-Wallis test and multivariate logistic regression. Results A total of 720 patients participated in the survey; of these, 714 patients provided complete data and were included in the analysis. Up to 86.97% of patients showed noncompliance to Antimicrobial therapy (total compliance score Conclusions A range of factors were associated with compliance to Antimicrobial therapy, including understanding of the treatment, gender, age, home address, education level, and family income.
