Future Generation Computer Systems, 2010Co-Authors: Francesco Palmieri, S PardiAbstract:Grid computing offers us an effective approach, infrastructure and trend for coordinated resource sharing, problem solving and service integration into dynamic, multi-institutional, virtual organizations often spanning several distant sites in a large urban or regional area. In this paper, we discuss opportunities and challenges in the Grid resource management infrastructure and network control plane design, critical to the provision of network-assisted extensible Grid services on the metropolitan scale. Such services can empower a real high performance distributed computing system built on optical transport networks, administered within a single domain and offering plenty of cheap bandwidth to e-science Applications. This approach makes the transport infrastructure the main enabling factor of a novel Grid vision, the ''Metropolitan Area Grid'' (MAG), aiming at unifying many geographically distributed federated computational and storage resources into a common ''virtual site'' abstraction, so that they can cooperate as if they were in the same Server Farm and Local Area Network. Simply stated, the MAG concept aims to make Applications running on our metro Grid infrastructure aware of their complete computational and networking environment and capabilities, and able to make dynamic, adaptive and optimized use of heterogeneous network infrastructures connecting various high-end resources. As a proof of concept, we realized within the SCoPE High Performance Computing environment the prototype of a basic MAG architecture by implementing a novel centralized network resource management service supporting a flexible Grid-Application Interface and several effective network resource reservation facilities.

Design : A computer-based health-care record system being developed for Boston's Healthcare for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) uses client-server technology and distributed database strategies to provide a common medical record for this transient population. The differing information requirements of physicians, nurses, and social workers are specifically addressed in the graphic Application Interface to facilitate an integrated approach to health care. This computer-based record system is designed for remote and portable use to integrate smoothly into the daily practice of providers of care to the homeless. The system uses remote networking technology and regular phone lines to support multiple concurrent users at remote sites of care. Results : A stand-alone, pilot system is in operation at the BHCHP medical respite unit. Information on 129 patient encounters from 37 unique sites has been entered. A full client-server system has been designed. Benchmarks show that while the relative performance of a communication link based upon a phone line is 0.07 to 0.15 that of a local area network, optimization permits adequate response. Conclusion : Medical records access in a transient population poses special problems. Use of client-server and distributed database strategies can provide a technical foundation that provides a secure, reliable, and accessible computer- based medical record in this environment.

The needs of physicians, nurses and social workers are specifically addressed in the Application Interface so that an integrated approach to healthcare for this population can be facilitated. These patients and their providers have unique medical information needs that are supported by both database and Applications technology. To integrate the information capabilities with the actual practice of providers of care to the homeless, this computer-based record system is designed for remote and portable use over regular phone lines. An initial standalone system is being used at one major BHCHP site of care. This project describes methods for creating a secure, accessible, and scalable computer-based medical record using client-server, distributed database design.

The World Wide Web provides a uniform and widely-accepted Application Interface used by these services to reach multitudes of clients. These changes place the Web server at the center of a gradually emerging e-service infrastructure with increasing requirements for service quality and reliability guarantees in an unpredictable and highly-dynamic environment. This paper describes performance control of a Web server using classical feedback control theory. We use feedback control theory to achieve overload protection, performance guarantees, and service differentiation in the presence of load unpredictability. We show that feedback control theory offers a promising analytic foundation for providing service differentiation and performance guarantees. We demonstrate how a general Web server may be modeled for purposes of performance control, present the equivalents of sensors and actuators, formulate a simple feedback loop, describe how it can leverage on real-time scheduling and feedback-control theories to achieve per-class response-time and throughput guarantees, and evaluate the efficacy of the scheme on an experimental testbed using the most popular Web server, Apache. Experimental results indicate that control-theoretic techniques offer a sound way of achieving desired performance in performance-critical Internet Applications. Our QoS (Quality-of-Service) management solutions can be implemented either in middleware that is transparent to the server, or as a library called by server code.

The World-Wide Web provides a uniform and widely-accepted Application Interface used by these services to reach multitudes of clients. These changes place the Web server at the center of a gradually emerging E-service infrastructure with increasing requirements for service quality, reliability, and security guarantees in an unpredictable and highly dynamic environment. Towards that end, we introduce a Web server QoS provisioning architecture for performance differentiation among classes of clients, performance isolation among independent services, and capacity planning to provide QoS guarantees on request rate and delivered bandwidth. We present a new approach to Web server resource management based on Web content adaptation. This approach subsumes traditional admission control-based techniques and enhances server performance by selectively adapting content in accordance with both load conditions and QoS requirements. Our QoS management solutions can be implemented either in middleware transparent to the server or by direct modification of the server software. We present experimental data to illustrate the practicality of our approach.
