  • Chimera: An Energy-Efficient and Deadline-Aware Hybrid Edge Computing Framework for Vehicular Crowdsensing Applications
IEEE Internet of Things Journal, 2019
Co-Authors: Lingjun Pu, Xu Chen, Jingdong Xu
    Abstract:

In this paper, we propose Chimera, a novel hybrid edge computing framework, integrated with the emerging edge cloud radio access network, to augment network-wide vehicle resources for future large-scale vehicular crowdsensing Applications, by leveraging a multitude of cooperative vehicles and the virtual machine (VM) pool in the edge cloud via the control of the Application Manager deployed in the edge cloud. We present a comprehensive framework model and formulate a novel multivehicle and multitask offloading problem, aiming at minimizing the energy consumption of network-wide recruited vehicles serving heterogeneous crowdsensing Applications, and meanwhile reconciling both Application deadline and vehicle incentive. We invoke Lyapunov optimization framework to design TaskSche, an online task scheduling algorithm, which only utilizes the current system information. As the core components of the algorithm, we propose a task workload assignment policy based on graph transformation and a knapsack-based VM pool resource allocation policy. Rigorous theoretical analyses and extensive trace-driven simulations indicate that our framework achieves superior performance (e.g., 20%-68% energy saving without overstepping Application deadlines for network-wide vehicles compared with vehicle local processing) and scales well for a large number of vehicles and Applications.

  • integration of Applications into digital television environment
    2001
Co-Authors: Chengyuan Peng, Pablo Cesar, Petri Vuorimaa
    Abstract:

The overall software system integration to run interactive services in set-top box is hard and essential since there is no ready system to ensure the cross-platform interoperability of the Applications. This paper presents a layered system integration model, which consists of interoperable Applications, Application Programming Interface (API), system software, and software and hardware resources. The digital television Applications are classified into three categories according to the service architecture. All Applications are managed and controlled by an Application Manager, which plays a central role in the model. The set-top box hardware prototype used in the system is a single board computer. Linux with selected modules was chosen as the set-top box operating system. Kaffe Java virtual machine was ported to Linux platform to interpret Java bytecodes of Applications. A working prototype system is introduced in the paper. Finally, we give the system running results and further improvement.

  • Digital television Application Manager
IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo 2001. ICME 2001., 2001
    Co-Authors: Chengyuan Peng, Petri Vuorimaa
    Abstract:

The future digital television will provide viewers new interactive services, e.g., Electronic Programming Guide, TV shopping, video-on-demand, etc. The set-top box needs a middleware to launch these Applications before interaction and collect garbage after quitting or switching to another service. It is the Application Manager’s responsibility to manage the lifecycles of the services. Thus, the Application Manager plays a crucial role in controlling the Applications and efficiently utilizing the limited resources of set-top box. This paper presents a design of an Application Manager, including a lifecycle model of an Application and a communication protocol between an Application and the Application Manager. Also, the Application Information Table (AIT), which carries the essential Application signaling information in a transport stream is introduced. Finally, the implementation, which uses Java technology, is described in detail.
