    Abstract:

    During the past years, technological advancements have significantly influenced Language Learning by providing teachers and students with access to a large amount of digital language learning resources. Additionally, the growth of mobile communications industry has led to the development of a new approach to Language Learning called Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). On the other hand, digital educational resources and activities are typically organized as Learning Objects and supported by Educational Metadata, they are stored in Learning Objects Repositories (LORs) facilitating efficient search, retrieval and re-use among different educational communities. Although the IEEE LOM Standard is used for describing educational resources with metadata, it is beyond its scope to directly support the description of characteristics related with MALL. In this paper we target addressing this issue, that is, to propose an IEEE LOM Application Profile that can be used for tagging educational resources suitable for Language Learning and supported by Mobile and Wireless Devices.

    Abstract:

    In the context of the emerging paradigm of Lifelong Learning, competence-based learning is gradually attracting the attention of the Technology-Enhanced Learning community, since it appears to meet the 21 st Century learning and training expectations of both individuals and organisations. On the other hand, the paradigm of Learning Objects - as a way to organize, manage, offer and use digital learning resources - retains, to a large extent, its initial anticipations and, supported by Educational Metadata, it is still influencing TechnologyEnhanced Learning system design. However, there not exist yet, a commonly accepted proposal for metadata that could describe competence-related characteristics of educational resources that support Lifelong Competence Development Programmes. In this paper we target addressing this issue, that is, we identify and study the main issues related to the competence-relevant characteristics of educational resources, taking into critical consideration the current state-of-the-art information models for competence descriptions (such as IEEE RCD and HR-XML) and we propose an IEEE LOM Competence-based Application Profile that can be used for tagging educational resources in a competence-meaningful manner.

    Educational metadata can significantly enhance the effective description, search and retrieval of online learning objects and educational resources. Thus a number of international efforts have been initiated during the past few years and have defined educational metadata standards for the common description of educational resources. This paper presents the architectural components and the fundamental functionalities of a software toolkit (eMAP), which aims to assist and facilitate the process of designing and implementing an educational metadata Application Profile by modifying and combining one or more educational metadata standards.

    Abstract:

    Motivation: Epidemiological cohorts typically contain a diverse set of phenotypes such that automation of phenome scans is non-trivial, because they require highly heterogeneous models. For this reason, phenome scans have to date tended to use a smaller homogeneous set of phenotypes that can be analysed in a consistent fashion. We present PHESANT (PHEnome Scan ANalysis Tool), a software package for performing comprehensive phenome scans in UK Biobank. General features: PHESANT tests the association of a specified trait with all continuous, integer and categorical variables in UK Biobank, or a specified subset. PHESANT uses a novel rule-based algorithm to determine how to appropriately test each trait, then performs the analyses and produces plots and summary tables. Implementation: The PHESANT phenome scan is implemented in R. PHESANT includes a novel Javascript D3.js visualization and accompanying Java code that converts the phenome scan results to the required JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format.     Motivation: In recent years Mendelian randomization analysis using summary data from genome-wide association studies has become a popular approach for investigating causal relationships in epidemiology. The mrrobust Stata package implements several of the recently developed methods. Implementation: mrrobust is freely available as a Stata package. General Features: The package includes inverse variance weighted estimation, as well as a range of median and MR-Egger estimation methods. Using mrrobust, plots can be constructed visualising each estimate either individually or simultaneously. The package also provides statistics such as I 2 GX , which are useful in assessing attenuation bias in causal estimates. Availability: The software is freely available from GitHub [https://raw.github.com/remlapmot/mrrobust/master/].
