Advertisement Data Management and Application Design in WBCs
Journal of Software, 2011Co-Authors: Ivan Ganchev, Mairtin O'dromaAbstract:This paper describes the advertisement data management and the corresponding intelligent Application design implementation for wireless billboard channel (WBC) in the emerging ubiquitous consumer wireless world (UCWW). The algorithms and Application runs at the Application enabler sub-layer of a WBC service provider (WBC-SP)'s node for broadcasting wireless services to mobile terminals (MTs). The advertisement data is formatted by abstract syntax notation one (ASN.l) and organized by segments with WBC algorithms to reduce the mobile user (MU)'s access time. The intelligent Application was used to run the data management algorithms, which is implemented with three Tiers: a service discovery and maintenance Tier acting as a client-server distributed system for data collection and organization; an intelligent Application Tier holding all business logic and common Application programming interfaces (APIs); and a multi-agent systems (MAS) Tier maintaining the advertisement, discovery and association (ADA) agents' lifecycle, and supplying directory facilitator services and message transport services. The performance evaluation of the proposed data management and Application architecture details are provided.

The WBC service provider's central node 'pushes' these advertisements over the WBCs to the mobile user terminals/nodes, which discover or update service offerings. Each user is thus supported in decision-making of the "best" service offerings matching their profile and their terminal's composite capabilities / preferences profile (CC/PP). The new WBC architecture consists of three Tiers: a service discovery and maintenance Tier acting as a client-server distributed system for data collection and organization; an intelligent Application Tier holding all business logic and common Application programming interfaces (APIs); and a multi-agent system Tier maintaining the advertisement, discovery and association (ADA) agents' lifecycle, and supplying 'directory facilitator' (DF) services and message transport services. A message channel, a blackboard and a gateway agent are shared by all three Tiers thus enabling ADA processing in a highly efficient way.

A HTTP-based medical image server compatible with evolving wireless communications infrastructures

SadleirAbstract:This paper proposes a HTTP-based medical image server for the analysis, processing and transmission of medical images (e.g. DfCOM, ANALYZES, CTC) realized on the server side, and displaying the results on the client side (handheld terminals, laptops), using the existing or upcoming wireless/wired Internet/Intranet telecommunications infrastructures. The medical image server runs on a lightweight 3-Tier J2EE architecture, fn the persistence Tier, a number of image archives, a relational database and an index database are used for saving the medical images, user profiles and index data respectively, fn the Application Tier, a set of APfs supports medical images loading, analysis and processing, helped by an intelligent business-logic API acting as a bridge between the persistence Tier and the web Tier, fn the web Tier, an Applet/Xlet, running on a laptop/handheld terminal, communicates with the server side using the HTTP protocol. With this HTTP-based medical image server, users can upload, retrieve, analyze, and process medical images behind firewalls in an effective and secure way.

The Services Sharing of Remote Sensing Data in Digital City

An Open Service-Oriented Architecture for LBS

This paper proposes an open architecture of LBS based on services sharing, which composed of data Tier, service Tier and Application Tier. The basic service and complex service in LBS is discussed and data visiting, analyzing and computing can all be visited as services by LBS Applications. Services composition is proposed to model the complex service and workflow, and then the service instance selection is implemented in the execution of process. In the end a prototype system is given to validate the feasibility of the architecture.

Partitioning of web Applications for hybrid cloud deployment

However, this flexibility comes at the expense of complexity in distributing a system over these two locations. For multi-Tier web Applications, this challenge manifests itself primarily in the partitioning of Application- and database-Tiers. While there is existing research that focuses on either Application-Tier or data-Tier partitioning, we show that optimized partitioning of web Applications benefits from both Tiers being considered simultaneously. We present our research on a new cross-Tier partitioning approach to help developers make effective trade-offs between performance and cost in a hybrid cloud deployment. The general approach primarily benefits from two technical improvements to integer-programming based Application partitioning. First, an asymmetric cost-model for optimizing data transfer in environments where ingress and egress data-transfer have differing costs, such as in many infrastructure as a service platforms. Second, a new encoding of database query plans as integer programs, to enable simultaneous optimization of code and data placement in a hybrid cloud environment. In two case studies the approach results in up to 54% reduction in monetary costs compared to a premise only deployment and 56% improvement in response time compared to a naive partitioning where the Application-Tier is deployed in the public cloud and the data-Tier is on private infrastructure.

When this is done, the Application Tier can easily take advantage of the elasticity and scale provided by the cloud, but the data management layer, being stateful, faces more issues. In this paper, we explore experimentally the limits to scaling for an Application that itself manages database replicas each placed in a virtual machine in the cloud (exactly following the design used when the Application would be deployed on an in-house cluster). We characterize important limits in the load on the master copy, the workload imposed on each slave copy when processing updates from the master, and also from the increasing staleness of replicas.
