Integrating architecture description languages : A semantics-based approach

However, none of the ADLs and their toolsets are expressive enough to cover all the requirements that may be specified while developing a software system. An ADL based approach will be more useful and powerful if ADLs can share Architectural descriptions and if their analysis tools can be integrated. In this paper, we propose a semantics-based approach to integrating ADLs. A general, executable form is developed for representing Architectural Information. A uniform query language is also defined that can be used to retrieve Architectural Information from this abstract form. There are at least three benefits of our framework. First, software designer and analysis tools can use a uniform query language to retrieve Architectural Information from Architectural descriptions written in different ADLs. Second, interpreters and toolsets for ADLs can be developed extremely quickly. Thus, as an ADL rapidly evolves, its implementation infrastructure can be developed at the same pace. Third, an architecture description written in one ADL can be readily translated into another ADL.

Linking a game engine environment to Architectural Information on the semantic web

We therefore started an investigation of two of the newest developments in these domains, namely game engine technology and semantic web technology. This paper documents part of this research, containing a review and comparison of the most prominent game engines and documenting our Architectural semantic web. A short test-case illustrates how both can be combined to enhance Information visualization for Architectural design and construction.

Architectural Information Modelling in Construction History
2009Co-Authors: Pieter Pauwels, Ruben Verstraeten, Ronald Meyer, Jan Van CampenhoutAbstract:The past few years show a significant increase in the usage of three-dimensional modelling and semantic description techniques for Architectural research purposes. Where this increase has already shaped today’s design and construction industry, research in Architectural and construction history can still improve its work methods and results through these techniques. Therefore, we propose a new conceptual approach for Architectural Information Modelling (AIM), which aims at describing historical Information in construction and architecture directly related to design Information and design practice. This paper will give an introduction into existing 3D modelling techniques and semantic description techniques, continuing with how these techniques are applied in the AIM approach. This investigation of 3D modelling and semantic technology shows promising results. However, in order to integrate these techniques into an AIM framework, more work is needed. Future work in this research project will therefore explore in further detail the semantic description scheme proposed below and the implementation of a proof-of-concept.

Architectural Information Modelling for Virtual Heritage Application

During the past years this led to the elaboration of the technique Building Information Modelling or BIM for describing buildings and building Information according to their different composing elements. One of the major advantages in this BIM approach is the possibility to use this building Information for calculation, simulation and analysis in related, more dedicated ICT applications. Starting from the building Information model, these applications are accessible through an interoperability language, namely the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), elaborated by the International Alliance for Interoperability or IAI. This paper proposes the development of an approach similar to BIM, namely Architectural Information Modelling (AIM), which describes more theoretical and historical building knowledge instead of the explicit and component-based descriptions inside BIM. It illustrates several possible advantages of this AIM approach for application in building documentation for virtual heritage, combined with possible historical analysis tools. It also makes a short comparison of this technique with procedural methods, a similar technique that is gaining much interest during the past few years in the domain of virtual heritage. Finally, this paper proposes future research ambitions and some conclusions of this first, conceptual research about an Architectural Information modelling approach.

self adaptive software system monitoring for performance anomaly localization

Particularly for software systems, a trade-off between monitoring coverage and performance overhead is necessary. In this paper, we propose an approach for localizing performance anomalies in software systems employing self-adaptive monitoring. Time series analysis of operation response times, incorporating Architectural Information about the diagnosed software system, is employed for anomaly localization. Comprising quality of service data, such as response times, resource utilization, and anomaly scores, OCL-based monitoring rules specify the adaptive monitoring coverage. This enables to zoom into a system's or component's internal realization in order to locate root causes of software failures and to prevent failures by early fault determination and correction. The approach has been implemented as part of the Kieker monitoring and analysis framework. The evaluation presented in this paper focuses on monitoring overhead, response time forecasts, and the anomaly detection process.

ECSA - A Platform for the Automated Provisioning of Architecture Information for Large-Scale Service-Oriented Software Systems.

Automatically and continuously extracting architecture Information from the system implementation makes it possible to document and keep architecture Information up-to-date. In large software systems, architecture extraction has to deal with the continuous and efficient extraction of Architectural Information from very large code bases. In cooperation with a company from the financial sector, we have developed over several years a platform for the automatic extraction and provision of Architectural Information for large-scale service-oriented software systems. The platform was evaluated in a real industrial environment. The results of this evaluation show that it can provide up-to-date Architectural Information for large code bases on a daily basis. It also provides Information on the trustworthiness of the extracted Information and how it can be improved.

Examples for quality control activities based on Architectural Information are architecture reviews, dependency analyses, and conformance analyses. Architecture is also an important artifact for understanding, reuse, evolution, and maintenance. Unfortunately, in many projects Architectural knowledge often remains implicit and is not available for a particular system stakeholder or outdated when it is actually needed. To address this problem, we propose to manage semi-formal software architecture knowledge in a central repository, where it is accessible to all stakeholders and where it can be automatically and continuously updated and analyzed by different tools. In this paper we discuss important elements and use cases of such an approach, and present an example for an architecture knowledge and Information repository in the context of an enterprise service-oriented architecture (SOA).

WICSA/ECSA - Extracting and Facilitating Architecture in Service-Oriented Software Systems

Architectural Information is created, stored and maintained in various locations like enterprise architecture management tools, design tools, text documents, and service registries/repositories. Capturing and maintaining this Information manually is time-intensive, expensive and error-prone. To address this problem we present an approach for automatically extracting Architectural Information from an actual SOA implementation. The extracted Information represents the currently implemented architecture and can be used as the basis for quality assurance tasks and, through synchronization, for keeping Architectural Information consistent in various other tools and locations. The presented approach has been developed for a SOA in the banking domain. Aside from presenting the main drivers for the approach and the approach itself, we report on experiences in applying the approach to different applications in this domain.
