  • An archive of identity: the Central African Archives and Southern Rhodesian history
    Archival Science, 2014
    Co-Authors: Lawrence Dritsas, Joan Haig
    Abstract:

Between 1943 and 1956, government archivists in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) collaborated with the publisher Chatto & Windus to produce a series of nine books. The collection was known as the ‘Oppenheimer Series’. The volumes were published by the Central African Archives and offered in print, for the first time, the primary sources—diaries, correspondence, notes and maps—that chronicled the first English-speaking Europeans to visit south-central Africa. This paper explores the role of this publication event in building a settled identity for Europeans in Southern Rhodesia. The publication of the Series coincided with efforts by the Rhodesian archivists to bring manuscripts from the UK to their collection in Salisbury (Harare). These activities reveal a strategy not only to publish the history of European exploration and settlement in central Africa but to reify it through the physical presence of these books and the Archival Institution itself.

  • elaborating a crosswalk between data documentation initiative ddi and encoded Archival description ead for an emerging data archive service provider
    IASSIST Quarterly, 2018
    Co-Authors: Benjamin Gabriel Peuch
    Abstract:

Belgium has recently decided to integrate the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA). The Social Sciences Data Archive (SODA) project aims at tackling the different challenges entailed by the setting up of a new research infrastructure in the form of a data archive. The SODA project involves an Archival Institution, the State Archives of Belgium, which, like most other large Archival repositories around the world, work with Encoded Archival Description (EAD) for managing their metadata. There exists at the State Archives a large pipeline of programs and procedures that processes EAD documents and channels their content through different applications, such as the online catalog of the Institution. Because there is a chance that the future Belgian data archive will be part of the State Archives and because DDI is the most widespread metadata standard in the social sciences as well as a requirement for joining CESSDA, the State Archives have developed a DDI-to-EAD crosswalk in order to re-use the State Archives' infrastructure for the needs of the future Belgian service provider. Technical illustrations highlight the conceptual differences between DDI and EAD and how these can be reconciled or escaped for the purpose of a data archive for the social sciences.

  • elaborating an xml crosswalk between ddi and ead for an emerging data archive service
    EDDI17 – 9th Annual European DDI User Conference, 2017
    Co-Authors: Benjamin Gabriel Peuch
    Abstract:

Belgium has recently decided to integrate the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA). The Social Sciences and Humanities Data Archive (SOHDA) project aims at tackling the different challenges entailed by the setting up of a new research infrastructure in the form of a data archive. The SOHDA project involves an Archival Institution—the State Archives of Belgium—which, like most other large Archival repositories around the world, work with the Encoded Archival Description (EAD) for managing their metadata. There exists at the State Archives a large pipeline of programs and procedures that processes EAD documents and channels their content through different applications, such as the online catalog of the Institution. Because there is a chance that the future Belgian data archive will be part of the State Archives, and because DDI is the most widespread metadata in the social sciences as well as a requirement for joining CESSDA, the State Archives have developed a DDI-to-EAD crosswalk in order to verify whether broad correspondences could be established between the two standards without departing from either one’s ‘spirit’ too heavily. The mapping is put into perspective by analyzing the roles played by archivists and how these largely fall within the remit of a data archive’s missions. Technical illustrations highlight the conceptual differences between DDI and EAD and how these can be reconciled for the purpose of a data archive for the social sciences.

  • Risk Management in the Indonesian Archival Institution
    DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2020
Co-Authors: Srirahayu Dyah, Mannan, Endang Fitriyah, Triwastuti Ria
    Abstract:

An Archival Institution is one of the Institutions that functions as an organization that does not have a priceless archive rescue organization. Like other organizations, Archival Institutions also experience risks that will affect their operational processes or important records they manage. The purpose of risk management is to minimize the failure received by the Institution due to existing risks. This study is to understand how the conditions of risk management in Archival Institutions, the risks they face and the impacts that occur. This study also aims to map risks in Archival Institutions ranging from mild to severe impacts, so that Archival Institutions can reduce the impact of risks if such risks occur. This research method uses a qualitative approach in Archival Institutions in Indonesia, namely provincial Archival Institutions and tertiary Institution archives. The results of this study indicate that the risk management in Archival Institutions does not exist in writing but has been carried out with reference to existing regulations

  • Archival Institution media public relations
    2016
    Co-Authors: Pavelin Goran
    Abstract:

Teorija i praksa odnosa s medijima pruža arhivistima, buducim prakticarima odnosa s javnoscu, temeljno sredstvo kojima se povezuje istraživanje medija i praksa odnosa s medijima. Knjiga je na poseban nacin namijenjena studentima informacijskih i komunikacijskih znanosti, ali i njihovim profesorima. Komunikacijski postulati novinarstva, medija i odnosa s javnoscu otvaraju informacijskoj podlozi arhivistike sasvim nove perspektive.
