    Abstract:

    In the south of Yunnan Province in China,there are Mt.Laobie,Mt.Bangma,Mt.Wuliang and Mt.Ailao,which influenced its climate and vegetation.And the study area is commonly controlled by the Indian monsoon system and East Asian monsoon system,i.e.,it is one of the main areas where the two summer monsoon systems merge.Therefore,the obvious regional difference of spatio-temporal heterogeneity of vegetation is induced by the complicated topographical terrain and the monsoon climate system,which cause various river hydrologic characteristics,soil types,vegetation types,etc.That is,these unique microhabitats formed by such kinds of combination of complicated topography and subtropical warm-humid air current are beneficial to Differentiation and variation of local species to a certain extent,thus leading to even more diverse vegetation type.Clustering analysis based on self-organizing feature mapping(SOFM) network is a new unsupervised clustering method that develops from neutral networks.In this paper,the neural network has been trained to perform complex functions in various fields of application including elevation,temperature,precipitation,wind speed,active accumulated temperature,evapotranspiration potential and enhanced vegetation index(EVI) at 30 meteorological stations.The result reveals that Ailao Mountain is such a firm barrier blocking the cold air coming from northern into southwest mountain region,and such a possible boundary between summer southwestern monsoon and winter northeastern monsoon of our country that it becomes a demarcation boundary of climate sort between west and east regions.This way,SOFM network is used in Areal Differentiation study of ecological geographical,is a rather good comprehensive physical regionalization method.For it can reflect the similarities and differences of different areas near the basic boundaries,and reveal a continuous process from quantitative changes to qualitative changes.

    Arguments for geography as the study of Areal Differentiation, of the spatial distribution of physical and human phenomena as they relate to one another, were promoted as the discipline's raison d'etre in the early twentieth century. They reflected earlier conceptions of a chorological approach to geography by Carl Sauer and, in particular, Richard Hartshorne, but whereas Sauer exemplified this relationship through the investigation of landscapes, Hartshorne focused on the study of regions. The latter approach, which for a few decades dominated the discipline, fell into disrepute as geographers increasingly specialized in particular systematic subfields, and subsequent attempts to reinvigorate descriptive accounts of particular regions have largely failed.     Although some aspects of the study of geography are common across a large number of countries, nevertheless a marked ‘geography of geographies ’ has emerged since the Second World War. Until then, there was considerable common ground based in geography as the study of Areal Differentiation – or chorology; it described and provided accounts for inter-regional differences in environments, human activities, and the interactions between the two. The widely-adopted foundations for such an approach were laid down by German and French geographers – with a major American defence of that approach published in 1939 (Hartshorne, 1939; see also Hartshorne, 1959; Entrikin and Brunn, 1990). Those foundations were rapidly eroded in the Anglophone world during the immediate post-war decades. Human geography in the UK, the USA and most of the former British Empire took a new path and contacts with practices in other language realms declined. Several decades of relative isolation stimulated cons iderable concerns from geographers in non-English-speaking countries regarding a perceived Anglo-American imperialist hegemony over disciplinary changes (on which see Harris, 2001).   • Areal Differentiation of snow accumulation and melt between peatland types in the james bay lowland

    Abstract:

    Snow accumulation and melt between various peatland types in the James Bay Lowlands is poorly understood despite being a significant source of fresh water to the saline James Bay. Many topographical factors that control snow accumulation and melt (e.g. slope, aspect) are not relevant in the James Bay Lowlands because of the extremely low relief. Thus, vegetation characteristics (e.g. winter leaf area index, tree density), which are strongly linked to peatland type, may dictate spatial patterns of snow accumulation and melt across the landscape. A 1.5-km long transect that bisected five peatland types representative of the local area was used to determine average snow depth, density and water equivalence for each of the landscape units. The peatland types were classified, in part, because of the density of treed vegetation and were named open bog, open shrub fen, low-density treed fen, medium density treed bog and high-density treed fen. Those with medium or high-density treed vegetation accumulated significantly more snow than those with low or open densities. Snow density, however, showed no correlation with landscape unit, and snowmelt proceeded at similar rates between all landscape units because of the relatively open canopy typical of this environment. A randomization test showed that the Areally weighted basin average snow depth estimates varied by less than 10 cm as a result of the small but statistically significant differences in snow accumulation among landscape units. These differences are therefore relatively unimportant for accurately quantifying basin-wide snow depth in this landscape. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Abstract:

    The authors analyzed migration data of 2000 Census and discovered the Areal Differentiations of migration rates and the migration flow fields for different reasons in contemporary China. Internal migration in China reached a new era of high activity and high capability. The unbalance of migration rates among east, middle and west belts has been enforced gradually, proving that the "mid-belt subsiding" is a phenomena of society as well as economy. Within the three typical flow patterns, both convergence and radial migration pattern have developed which made the Peal River Delta a powerful convergence center, while convection between Northeast China and Shandong is disappearing. The Northwest is replacing Northeast as a new attractive area. If divided by Qinling-Huaihe and Heihe-Tengchong combined natural with human geographical lines, the migration field in China breaks into two "flow basins" of Southeast and Northwest. Priority of employment is getting greater in migration and market replacing planning acts the first driven force to migration and talent flow. The marriage migration directs mainly from southwest mountainous area to eastern rural area, which creates a "karst bride source" in Southwest China.

  • Towards a model of language contact and change in the English-lexifier creoles of Africa and the Caribbean

    Abstract:

    The Afro-Caribbean English-lexifier Creoles (AECs) exhibit fascinating combinations of disparate typological characteristics. I present a model of post-formative (“post-creolization”) contact and change and provide a comprehensive inventory of contact constellations in Africa and the Caribbean. I conduct a comparative analysis of causative constructions in seven African and Caribbean AECs, argue for the notional separation of the traditional creolist terms “superstrate”, “lexifier”, “substrate” and “adstrate”, and account for the linguistic-structural relevance of these distinctions. The model can explain the typological diversity within and across the AECs, help elucidate their genealogical and Areal Differentiation, and contribute to our understanding of the processes and outcomes of language contact and change in multilingual ecologies.
