  • robert michels e a oligarquia do partido dos trabalhadores robert michels and the oligarchy of the brazilian workers party
    Social Science Research Network, 2010
    Co-Authors: Pedro Floriano Ribeiro
    Abstract:

“Who says organization, says oligarchy.” These Michels’ words summarize his law of oligarchy, which emphasizes the inexorableness of processes of leadership oligarchization in any mass organization – especially trade unions and political parties. The paper evaluates this process in a party that, according to its supporters and many analysts, would be immune to the iron law. Seeing oligarchization as a process of forming a party Aristocracy almost immovable, the Schonfeld’s (1980) indicators were applied to measure the stability level of the petista leadership in the National Directory (DN), National Executive Committee (CEN), and in the core of the Executive (strategic offices in party structure), from 1980 to 2009. Despite some peculiarities, the application of these indicators to the PT leaves no doubt: in its centenary, Michels’ law of oligarchy remains strong and contemporary.

  • corporate ownership of the public debt mapping the new Aristocracy of finance
    Socio-economic Review, 2015
    Co-Authors: Sandy Brian Hager
    Abstract:

In various writings Karl Marx made references to an ‘Aristocracy of finance’ in Western Europe and the USA that dominated ownership of the public debt. Drawing on original research, this article offers the first comprehensive analysis of public debt ownership within the US corporate sector. The research shows that over the past three decades, and especially in the context of the current crisis, a new Aristocracy of finance has emerged, as holdings of the public debt have become rapidly concentrated in favour of large corporations classified within Finance, Insurance and Real Estate. Operationalizing Wolfgang Streeck's concept of the ‘debt state’, the article goes on to demonstrate how concentration in ownership of the public debt reinforces patterns of social inequality and proceeds in tandem with a shift in government policy, one that prioritizes the interests of government bondholders over the general citizenry.

  • Elizabeth Stuart - Her Royal Court in Prague and Contacts with Czech Individuals in the Exile
    2021
    Co-Authors: Harceková Eliška
    Abstract:

Presented bachelor thesis is concerned with the life of Elizabeth Stuart (1596-1662), Frederick V's wife, who, as a so called "winter queen," is in Czech historical writing usually perceived rather negatively and lacking any effort to integrate herself into the Bohemian milieu. However, proper attention hasn't been given yet to the Czech people, whom she was in contact with. Hence, the main aim of this thesis is to shed some light on her relations with protestant Aristocracy involved in the Bohemian Revolt. Attention is paid especially to those employed at court and in its close proximity. The first part generally characterizes the structure and functioning of early modern female courts, especially in the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century. The second chapter describes the personality of Elizabeth Stuart and her court. Within this context, chosen parts are devoted to the contacts with Czech Aristocracy and their involvement at Elizabeth's court, which are reconstructed from primary sources as well as secondary

Institute of Czech HistoryÚstav českých dějinFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art

  • the law of primogeniture and the transition from landed Aristocracy to industrial democracy
    Journal of Economic Growth, 2006
    Co-Authors: Graziella Bertocchi
    Abstract:

We study the connection between inheritance systems and the historical evolution of the relationship between a society’s economic structure and its political system, with a focus on Europe from feudal times. The model predicts that, in an early agrarian phase, aristocratic political systems prevail, while democracies tend to emerge with industrialization. At the same time, as indivisible landed estates are replaced by capital as the primary source of wealth, the inheritance system evolves endogenously from primogeniture to partition. The dynamics of output, distribution, class structure and political participation are in turn reinforced by the system of intergenerational wealth transmission, with primogeniture tending to concentration and partition to equalization.

  • the law of primogeniture and the transition from landed Aristocracy to industrial democracy
    2003
    Co-Authors: Graziella Bertocchi
    Abstract:

This Paper looks at the historical evolution of the relationship between an economy's structure and the corresponding political system, with a focus on the European experience, starting from feudal times. We show why, in an early agricultural phase, aristocratic political systems prevail, while democracies tend to emerge with industrialization. At the same time the law of inheritance evolves from primogeniture to equal partition, as the primary source of wealth shifts from land to capital. The model also replicates the historical stylized facts of output growth and its sectoral composition, income and wealth distribution, and class structure.
