saliency based image quality Assessment Criterion
International Conference on Intelligent Computing, 2008Co-Authors: Liming ZhangAbstract:Image quality Assessment (IQA) is a critical issue in image processing applications, but traditional criteria based on the differences between reference and distorted images do not correlate well with perceived quality. MSSIM and VIF criteria proposed recently are regarded as excellent models in comparison with others, but they only consider local features and ignore some global concepts. In this paper, we propose an improved method that adds global saliency features to the criteria of MSSIM and VIF. For the sake of reducing the computational complexity, we propose a simpler and faster method to extract the saliency map. Experimental results for a set of intuitive examples as well as validation on a database of 779 images with different distortion types demonstrate that the improved IQA criteria can get a better performance than their original forms.

Ionic aqueous diffusion through unsaturated cementitious materials – A comparative study
Construction and Building Materials, 2014Co-Authors: Hugo Mercado-mendoza, Sylvie Lorente, Xavier BourbonAbstract:Abstract The diffusion coefficient is a highly important parameter either as a durability indicator in the field of civil engineering or as an Assessment Criterion in the domain of nuclear waste disposal. In this paper we address the fundamental issue of the diffusion coefficient evolution with the water saturation level of cement-based materials. The study is comparing concretes and cement pastes cast with either blended cement or Portland cement. The analysis emphasizes the impact of the pore size distribution on the diffusivity as a function of the saturation degree.

Approach to Formulation of Nondestructive Quality Assessment Criterion of High-Strength Steel Lifting Hooks
Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation, 2002Co-Authors: K. L. Barui, B. BhattacharyaAbstract:The present investigation attempts to formulate the analytical quality Assessment criteria of lifting hooks made of 4140 grade (400 °C temper) high-strength steel using linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) procedures. According to the existing standard specifications, the proof load test is mandatory for the acceptance/rejection of these components. Also, there is a provision that the hooks should be checked by nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques and must be free from obvious defects, but there is no stipulation of acceptance limit of defect, if any. It is therefore not realistic and is insufficient, because sometimes tested hooks are found to fail in actual service. In the present paper, acceptance limit that is, the maximum allowable defect sizes for dynamic loads with various stress ratios are quantitatively estimated from the computed defect growth curves. The maximum allowable operating cycles for nondestructively detectable minimum defects are tabulated, from which a logical quality Assessment criteria has been formulated for the Assessment of the fatigue life of the hooks. This investigation is helpful for the safe operation of the hooks.
