    Abstract:

    We present a new error concealment technique for Audio Transmission over heterogeneous packet switched networks based on time-scale modification of correctly received packets. An appropriate time-scale modification algorithm, WSOLA ("Waveform Similarity Overlap-Add"), is used and its parameters are optimized for scaling short Audio segments. Particular attention is paid to the additional delay introduced by the new technique. For subjective listening tests, packet loss is simulated at error rates of 20% and 33% and the new technique is compared to previous proposals by category and component judgment of speech quality. The test results show that typical disturbance components of other techniques can be avoided and overall sound quality is higher.

Unlike other techniques it modifies the time-scale of correctly received packets instead of repeating them. This is done by a time-domain algorithm, WSOLA, whose parameters are redefined so that short Audio segments like lost packets can be extended. Particular attention is paid to the additional delay introduced by the new technique. For subjective hearing tests, single and double packet loss is simulated at high packet loss rates, and the new technique is compared to previous proposals by category judgment and component judgment of sound quality. Mean Opinion Score (MOS) curves show that sound distortions due to packet repetition can be reduced.

    Abstract:

    A new class of protocols like RTP, RTSP and RSVP are tailoring today's packet networks for streaming real time multimedia data that once carried only non real time traffic. Multimedia networking is now possible with the existing network infrastructure. We describe a real time multimedia presentation system for media on demand over the Internet. It uses RTP and is capable of real time video/Audio Transmission. Our system consists of servers that maintain video/Audio clips and clients that retrieve and present them to the users. It provides VCR like control features for user interactivity during playback. The paper describes the system architecture, and the communication protocols, along with media synchronization and dynamic QoS control mechanisms.
