Signal Processing-image Communication, 2004Co-Authors: Pedro Miguel Fonseca, Fernando PereiraAbstract:Abstract The ever-growing amount of Audiovisual Content available has raised the need to develop systems allowing each of us to consume the information considered ‘essential’, adapted to our tastes, our preferences, our time and also to our capacities of receiving, consuming and storing that information. In other words, there is an increasing need to develop systems able to automatically summarize Audiovisual information. This paper proposes a novel query-based summary creation mechanism using a relevance metric and a constraints schema implemented in the context of an automatic video summarization system based on MPEG-7 descriptions. In the context of the same system, this paper also proposes a human skin filter allowing to build summaries based on the presence or absence of human skin. This skin colour filter is based solely on the MPEG-7 Dominant Colour descriptor, which means that the Content is skin filtered with a rather small amount of processing, without accessing and processing the video data.

The domain-specific descriptions of the Audiovisual Content metadata are completely transparent to applications and tools that use MPEG-7 and TV-Anytime, allowing them to use the domain- specific ontologies without any software changes. We also present an interoperability mechanism between OWL and the Audiovisual Content description standards, which allows MPEG-7 and TV-Anytime descriptions and their domain-specific extensions to be described in OWL and vice versa. Thus, the methodology and the mechanisms presented here open up opportunities for reusing ontology tools and ontologies across a large number of applications (with or without Audiovisual Content) and across different professional and user communities. We present the details of the methodology and the implementation of the tools supporting it as well as its integration in a large framework for domain-specific indexing and retrieval of Audiovisual Content.

The main objectives of this work are to provide a framework allowing enhanced retrieval performance and better user interfaces for Audiovisual data, based on extensions of the well accepted international standards for the digital media, digital broadcasting and TV-Anytime domains like TV-Anytime and MPEG-7, as well as to provide an interoperability framework between TV-Anytime and MPEG-7 for the rapidly expanding set of interoperating digital library and interactive TV applications. The framework was developed in the context of the UP-TV project, which investigates TV-Anytime architectures and services. Our approach is ontology-driven, in the sense that we provide ontology based domain-specific extensions of the standards for describing multimedia Content. Several aspects of the framework are based on the existence of ontologies. Our framework allows the creation of more efficient user interfaces for accessing Content, better retrieval performance and better support in the indexing phase. It also provides compatibility in indexing between the two standards and interoperability for TV-Anytime and digital library applications supported by TV-Anytime servers. We have developed a domain-specific ontology (football games) to test our framework ideas and implementation. The developed ontology uses as primitive modelling elements those provided by the MPEG-7 metadata model. The mapping of the ontology to TV-Anytime metadata primitives is straightforward. We show in detail the concrete implementation of the framework on top of relational databases and its interfaces with the other system components.

the battle of youtube tv and netflix an empirical analysis of competition in audio visual media markets

Not long ago, it was dominated by linear television, transmitted terrestrially, through cable networks or via satellite. Recently, streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime and others have emerged as new suppliers of Audiovisual Content. In this quickly changing industry, competition interrelations between such different formats like traditional TV, videos on YouTube, and streaming via Netflix are subject to con-troversy. In particular, doubt is cast on services like YouTube exerting competitive pressure on services like Netflix and traditional TV. Based upon a survey with almost 3,000 participants, we provide an empirical analysis of consumption behavior of Audiovisual Contents. Using descriptive and analytical statistics, including multiple equation models, we show that there are specific areas within Audiovisual Content markets where YouTube exerts considerable competitive pressure on both Netflix and classic TV, for instance, through prime time video entertainment. However, our analysis yields differentiated results as we also identify areas where competition intensity between different service types appear to be low, for instance, through daytime and regarding the intention to shorten waiting time.

Due to the wide variation of available bandwidth over Internet sessions, there is a need for scalable video coding methods and (corresponding) flexible streaming approaches that are capable of adapting to changing network conditions in real time. In this paper, we describe a new scalable video-coding framework that has been adopted recently by the MPEG-4 video standard. This new MPEG-4 video approach, which is known as Fine-Granular-Scalability (FGS), consists of a rich set of video coding tools that support quality (i.e., SNR), temporal, and hybrid temporal-SNR scalabilities. Moreover, one of the desired features of the MPEG-J FGS method is its simplicity and flexibility in supporting unicast and multicast streaming applications over IF.
