In the last two decades, the press has undergone a remarkable transforma-tion, motivated chiefly by the emergence of the Internet and its turning into the predominant information medium, which has decisively influen-ced the configuration of classic journalistic genres. By analyzing 100 pieces published during 2018 in the Spanish newspapers El País and El Confiden-cial, this research aims to identify the features that characterize world news in the novel virtual environment. The Search Behavior of Media Professionals at an Audiovisual Archive: A Transaction Log Analysis (Abstract)
2011Co-Authors: Bouke Huurnink, Laura Hollink, Wietske Van Den Heuvel, Maarten De RijkeAbstract:Finding Audiovisual Material for reuse in new programs is an important activity for news producers, documentary makers, and other media professionals. Such professionals are typically served by an Audiovisual broadcast archive. We report on a study of the transaction logs of one such archive. The analysis includes an investigation of commercial orders made by the media professions, as well as a characterization of sessions, queries, and the content of terms recorded in the logs. We identify a strong demand for short pieces of Audiovisual Material in the archive. Also, searchers are generally able to quickly navigate to a usable Audiovisual broadcast, but it takes them longer to place an order for a subsection of a broadcast than it does for them to order an entire broadcast. Queries are found to predominantly consist of (parts of) broadcast titles and of proper names. Our observations imply that it may be beneficial to increase support for fine-grained access to Audiovisual Material, for example, through manual segmentation or content-based analysis.

search behavior of media professionals at an Audiovisual archive a transaction log analysis

These are mainly obtained and used through internet. These contents are easy to generate, edit and share through new technological tools and the booming digital social networks. Nowadays, the students who populate the classrooms are accustomed to the use of new technologies, especially from a playful point of view, and with a high ability to find and assimilate information from them. However, they also show at the same time a tendency to quickly discard all that elements they are not interested in, without having reflected about the knowledge or the experience that they could have obtained. In this paper we show several useful techniques for Audiovisual educational content generating using the same language used by our students to provide them with incentives, motivation and involvement in the learning process. These tools, in case they are generated in a proper way, will not only promote their interest, but also, after an initial effort in its creation, will be of great use for professors and teachers to help them to lead large groups of students. We want to provide guidance and our teaching experiences in order to: (1) Find licensed online content that be can be reused; (2) Modify these contents to adequately adapt them to our students; (3) Generate our own Audiovisual Material in such ways that are direct, useful and attractive to them; (4) Edit them with open or free license software to be adjusted to the maximum number of possible needs and to add interesting educational effects such as the combination of graphics and diagrams with the professor explaining these contents.

Chanchadas and intermediality: on musical numbers of Aviso aos Navegantes (Watson Macedo, Brazil, 1950)
'University College Cork', 2020Co-Authors: Costa, Flávia Cesarino, Gibbs JohnAbstract:This Audiovisual essay explores the intermedial nature of Brazilian film comedies produced during the 1940s and 1950s, by exploring the musical numbers of Aviso aos Navegantes (Watson Macedo, Atlântida Cinematográfica, 1950). Brazilian cinema of this period is a privileged arena of different media strategies. Its ‘mixed’ style is informed by Hollywood cinema but also by the domestic influence of radio, carnival, and by the local forms of comic staging of the teatro de revista (the Brazilian equivalent of music hall or vaudeville). Of particular interest in this regard are the chanchadas, a body of films made between the mid-1930s and the early 1960s, that presented musical performances intertwined with comic situations, slender narrative lines and strong connections with the world of carnival. Our aim is to show how the relationships between the different forms of cultural production in 1950s Brazil can be identified in a specific chanchada, opening a dialogue between musical performances on stage, over the radio, at carnival and on screen. The essay also examines similarities and differences between chanchadas and Hollywood musical comedy tradition. One area explored is integration, both in the sense in which it is often used in film studies, to discuss the relationship between the numbers and the narrative, and in reflecting on whether the different elements which feed into the numbers of Aviso aos Navegantes are seamlessly combined in the film. Despite the huge popular success of his films, Watson Macedo was considered by many as the most “Americanized” of the directors of that period, adhering less to the critical mechanisms of parody than was the case with his contemporaries. However, if we pay attention to Macedo’s musical numbers, it is evident that these performances are not imperfect copies of Hollywood originals, but have a logic of their own. The Audiovisual essay complements Flavia Cesarino Costa’s other article for this issue of Alphaville, ‘Building an integrated history of musical numbers in Brazilian chanchadas’, by exploring related ideas in the context of a single film. As well as the interest of the essay’s own exploration and argument, the pairing of essays – traditional and videographic – enables readers of the special issue to pursue their thinking about chanchadas and intermediality with specific Audiovisual Material in front of them
