  • Highly scalable NewSQL database management system CockroachDB
    2018
    Co-Authors: Mav Matjaž
    Abstract:

The thesis deals with a NewSQL database called CockroachDB. The aim of the thesis is to describe key concepts used in NewSQL databases and then evaluate and compare performance of the new database CockroachDB and the well-established PostgreSQL database. NewSQL databases are built for distributed environments and integrate the properties of both SQL and NoSQL databases. NewSQL databases use the standard SQL query language for interaction with a database. They use ACID transactions that guarantee high data consistency. They enable easier horizontal scaling, replication, high availability and Automatic Failover. The results of simple queries showed that CockroachDB achieves on average 5 times lower throughput and 3 times higher latency compared to PostgreSQL on three node cluster. Furthermore, CockroachDB provides only basic support for join operations

  • Highly scalable NewSQL database management system CockroachDB
    2018
    Co-Authors: Mav Matjaž
    Abstract:

Diplomsko delo obravnava NewSQL podatkovno bazo CockroachDB. Cilj diplomskega dela je opisati osnovne koncepte, uporabljene v NewSQL podatkovnih bazah, in izvesti primerjalno analizo zmogljivosti med novo podatkovno bazo CockroachDB ter že dobro uveljavljeno podatkovno bazo PostgreSQL. NewSQL podatkovne baze so prilagojene za porazdeljena okolja in združujejo lastnosti SQL in NoSQL podatkovnih baz. Uporabljajo standardni SQL poizvedovalni jezik za interakcijo s podatkovno bazo. Preko ACID transakcij zagotavljajo visoko konsistenco podatkov. Omogočajo enostavno horizontalno skaliranje, replikacijo, visoko razpoložljivost in avtomatsko obnovo ob izpadu. The thesis deals with a NewSQL database called CockroachDB. • Open Source Firewalls: Open source firewall alternatives
    Network Security archive, 2006
    Co-Authors: Bruce Potter
    Abstract:

Most enterprises look no further than the major commercial vendors when it comes to planning future firewalls. But open source firewalls - often poo-pooed as overly simplistic - can now be used in a much wider range of situations and are better suited for complex and demanding environments. Traditional firewalls have provided security and network engineers real enterprise functionality: high throughput, stateful filtering, ease of management, Automatic Failover, and highly reliable operation. For larger enterprises, these the cost of these firewalls are easily outweighed by their benefits. But for many the price may be burdensome or the feature set may simply be more than is needed. But due to the work of large numbers of developers, the open source firewall alternatives have become serious competitors to their commercial brethren. Open source firewalls still may not be for everyone, but they are certainly beginning to make a difference. When most enterprises start examining options for firewalls, they instinctively consider the major commercial firewall vendors. Product offerings such as Cisco's Pix, Checkpoint's Firewall-1, and FortiNet's FortiGate all bubble to the surface. These firewalls have historically provided security and network engineers real enterprise functionality: high throughput, stateful filtering, ease of management, Automatic Failover, and highly reliable operation. For larger enterprises, these the cost of these firewalls are easily outweighed by their benefits. However, for many the price may be burdensome or the feature set may simply be more than is needed.

  • Oracle Real Application Clusters
    2013
Co-Authors: Deepali Kadam, An Bhalwarkar, Rahul Neware, Rajesh Sapkale, Raunika Lamge
    Abstract:

Abstract-This paper shows Automatic Failover and load balancing for Oracle real Application Clusters. rac enables you to use clustered hardware by running multiple instances against the same database. The database files are stored on disks that are either physically or logically connected to each node, so that every active instance can read from or write to them. Oracle Real Application Clusters manages data access, so that changes are coordinated between the instances and each instance sees a consistent image of the database. The Cluster Interconnect enables instances to pass coordination information and data images between each other. The architecture enables users and application to benefit from the processing power of multiple machines. Oracle RAC architecture also achieves redundancy in the case of, for example, a system crashing or becoming unavailable; the application can still access the database on any surviving instances. • A Reference Architecture for High-Availability Automatic Failover between PaaS Cloud Providers
Trustworthy Systems and their Applications (TSA), 2014 International Conference on, 2014
Co-Authors: Ivor D. Addo, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, William C. Chu
    Abstract:

As the adoption rate of Cloud Computing continues to clamber on among various application archetypes, there is a growing concern for identifying reliable Automatic Failover solutions between various cloud providers in an attempt to minimize the effect of recent cloud provider outages among diverse always-on and mission-critical applications in healthcare, e-Commerce and ancillary settings. Automatic Failover between cloud providers stands out as a solution for course-plotting application reliability requirements in support of high-availability, disaster recovery and high-performance scenarios. Using a case study involving Microsoft's Windows Azure cloud and the Google App Engine cloud solution, we investigate some of the key characteristics in this area of concern and present a reference architecture for Automatic Failover between multiple Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) cloud delivery providers in a bid to maximize the delivery of architecturally significant quality attributes pertaining to High-Availability, Performance and Disaster Recovery in a mission-critical application prototype.
