  • A combined MBPC/H/sub /spl infin// Automatic pilot for a civil aircraft
Proceedings of the 1997 American Control Conference (Cat. No.97CH36041), 1997
Co-Authors: G. Papageorgiou, M. Huzmezan, Keith Glover, Jan M. Maciejowski
    Abstract:

Motivates the combined use of H/sub /spl infin// loop-shaping and model based predictive control (MBPC) as a method for designing Automatic Pilots for civil aircraft. The H/sub /spl infin// loop-shaping controller will provide stability augmentation and guidance. The MBPC controller will act as a flight manager. The design procedure developed was tested by designing an autopilot for the Research Civil Aircraft Model (RCAM) used in the GARTEUR design challenge. The resulting controller was subjected to a standard evaluation procedure. Satisfactory results were achieved.

  • The Effects Of Hvdc Submarine Cables On Shipping With Magnetic AutoPilots
Sixth International Conference on AC and DC Power Transmission, 1996
    Co-Authors: P.m. Smith, I.w. Whitlock, A.p. Balkwill
    Abstract:

Additional sources of magnetic field will combine with the Earth's field and locally deflect a magnetic compass from the true magnetic, or compass, north. As a result, ships using Automatic Pilots based on the magnetic compass, may be deflected from their planned route. This paper considers monopolar HVDC submarine power cables as sources of magnetic field, and the effects they may have on ships' compasses, in particular, on the paths of ships near the cable which are navigating by autopilot using the magnetic compass for its reference.
