Food Research International, 2018Co-Authors: Giulia Secci, G Moniello, Giuliana ParisiAbstract:Abstract A partial substitution (25 or 50%) of dietary protein with Tenebrio molitor (TM) and Hermetia illucens (HI) meals as protein sources in the diet of Barbary partridge (Alectoris barbara) has been tested in terms of raw and cooked meat quality. Twelve partridges per feeding group (control - SBM, HI25, HI50, TM25 and TM50) were slaughtered. The peeled carcasses of the HI25, HI50, TM25 and TM50 groups were heavier than those of the SBM group, both raw and cooked. The pH, color and shear force of the raw meat were not affected to any greater extent by the diet, whereas the presence of insect meal seemed to increase the yellowness index of the cooked meat. The proximate composition was unaffected by both the species and the level of insect meal, although the fatty acid profile was changed considerably. The HI and TM groups had significantly higher C18:1n-9 and lower C16:0 contents than SBM. Furthermore, Hermetia illucens, added as 50% of the dietary protein, induced a significant increase in C12:0 and C16:1n-7. As a result, the highest AI and TI were obtained for the HI50 diet (0.38 and 0.75, respectively), whereas the TM groups both had intermediate AI values (around 0.35) and the lowest TI (0.67). Finally, the cholesterol content of the birds was not affected by insect inclusion in the feeds.

TM seems to be more effective than HI in improving FCR. The reduced albumin/globulin ratio in the insect meal fed groups could be ascribed to the chitin content and this result was not affected by the amount of chitin intake, suggesting that also the lowest values are able to express their potential effects in partridges.

No genetic record of hybridization is known for the barbary partridge ( A. barbara ). This species is distributed mostly in North Africa and, in Europe, on the island of Sardinia (Italy) and on Gibraltar. The risk of hybridization between barbary and red-legged partridge ( A. rufa : Iberian Peninsula, France, Italy) is high in Sardinia and in Spain.We developed two random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers to detect A. barbara x A. rufa hybrid partridges.We tested themon 125 experimental hybrids, sequenced the relative species-specific bands and found that the bands and their corresponding sequences were reliably transmitted through a number of generations (F1, F2, F3, BC1, BC2). Our markers represent a highly valuable tool for the preservation of the A. barbara genome from the pressing threat of A. rufa pollution.

Biología de Sympherobius barberi Banks (Neuroptera : Hemerobiidae) criado con Dactylopius opuntiae Cockerell (Hemíptera : Dactylopiidae).

IlianaAbstract:El nopal verdura, Opuntia ficus-indica, es una hortaliza de importancia económica en México, y una de sus plagas más importantes es la cochinilla silvestre del nopal, Dactylopius opuntiae. Dentro del complejo de, sus enemigos naturales nativos es el depredador Sympherobius barberi se considera uno de sus potenciales aalternativas de control, pero no existe información sobre esta especie. El objetivo de esta investigación fue estudiar la biología y morfología de S. barberi alimentado con D. opuntiae. Todo el material de la plaga y el depredador, para establecer las crías de laboratorio, se obtuvo de la zona productora de nopal verdura de Tlalnepantla, Morelos. S. barberi tienes tres instares larvales y completó su ciclo biológico en 28 días, presentó una tasa neta de reproducción (Ro) de 36.6, una tasa intrínseca de crecimiento (rm) de 0.081, un tiempo de generación de 44.27 días y una tasa finita de reproducción (λ) de 1.084. Morfológicamente la larva uno se diferencia por la presencia del empodium alargado en forma de trompeta, y la larva dos y tres presentan un empodio trapezoidal no más largo que las uñas. No se observaron características evidentes para separar larvas dos de tres aunque el tamaño puede ser el mejor indicador. Este estudio es uno de los primeros reportes formales de la biología de S. barberi criado sobre cochinilla silvestre del nopal, y se discute la relevancia de continuar estudios con esta y otras especies de depredadores de D. opuntiae. _______________ BIOLOGY OF Sympherobius barberi Banks (NEUROPTERA: HEMEROBIIDAE) REARED ON Dactylopius opuntiae Cockerell (HEMIPTERA: DACTYLOPIIDAE). ABSTRACT: Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) in Mexico, where people consume young pads as vegetables and call them nopalitos, is a horticultural crop of great economic, social and environmental importance, and one of its most important pests is the wild cochineal insect, Dactylopius opuntiae. Natural enemies complex includes Sympherobius barberi a hemerobid predator that is considered one of the possible control alternatives. The objective of this research was to assess some biological aspect of this predator reared on D. opuntiae. All the specimens used to establish laboratory colonies of both, the pests and the predator species, were collected during 2008 and 2009 from the nopalitos producing zone in Tlalnepantla, Morelos. S. barberi has three larval stages and completed its life cycle after 28 days. Females had a four day preovipositional period, daily average eggs per female were 1.98. Also, S. barberi showed a net reproductive rate (Ro) of 36.6; a daily intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of 0.081; a generation time of 44.27 days and a finite reproductive rate (λ) of 1.084. First larval stage has a long trumped-like empodium but second and third larval stages have a pad-like empodium, smaller than its nails. We did not find morfological evidence to distinguish second or third larval stages, but size could be an important indicator. The present paper gives the first biological data for S. barberi reared on D. opuntiae. The relevance of studies on S. barberi and other wild cochineal insect predators are discussed
