State-of-the-art on resistance of Bearing-Type bolted connections in high strength steel
Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering, 2020Co-Authors: Yi-fan Lyu, Yan-bo WangAbstract:With the recent development of material science, high strength steel (HSS) has become a practical solution for landmark buildings and major projects. The current codes for design of Bearing-Type bolted connections of steel constructions were established based on the research of conventional steels. Since the mechanical properties of HSS are different from those of conventional steels, more works should be done to develop the appropriate approach for the design of Bearing-Type bolted connections in HSS. A review of the research carried out on Bearing-Type bolted connections fabricated from conventional steel and HSS is presented. The up-to-date tests conducted at Tongji University on four connection Types fabricated from three grades of HSS with nominal yield strengths of 550, 690, and 890 MPa are presented. The previous research on failure modes, Bearing resistance and the design with consideration of bolt hole elongation are summarized. It is found that the behavior of bolted connections in HSS have no drastic difference compared to that of conventional steel connections. Although the ductility is reduced, plastic deformation capacity of HSS is sufficient to ensure the load redistribution between different bolts with normal construction tolerances. It is also found that behavior of each bolt of multi-bolt connections arranged in perpendicular to load direction is almost identical to that of a single-bolt connection with the same end distance. For connections with bolts arranged in parallel to load direction, the deformation capacity of the whole connection depends on the minimum value between the end distance and the spacing distances in load direction. The comparison with existing design codes shows that Eurocode3 and Chinese GB50017-2017 are conservative for the design of bolted connections in HSS while AISC 360-16 may overestimate the Bearing resistance of bolted connections.

We compared the effect of Bearing Type (MOM vs MOP) on taper material loss for a hip system of a single design. METHODS: In this cohort study, we recruited retrieved MOM (n = 30) and MOP (n = 22) Bearing hips that were consecutively received at our center. We prospectively collected associated clinical and imaging data. We measured the severity of corrosion and volumes of material loss at each head taper surface and used multivariate statistical analysis to investigate differences between the 2 Bearing Types. RESULTS: The median rate of material loss for the MOM and MOP groups was 0.81 mm3/y (0.01-3.45) and 0.03 mm3/y (0-1.07), respectively (P < .001). Twenty-nine of 30 MOM hips were revised for adverse metal reactions, compared with 1 of 22 MOP hips. CONCLUSION: MOP hips lost significantly less material from their taper junctions than MOM hips. Our results can reassure patients with MOP Pinnacle hips that they are unlikely to experience clinically significant problems related to material loss from the taper junction.

The risk of revision after total hip arthroplasty in young patients depends on surgical approach, femoral head size and Bearing Type; an analysis of 19,682 operations in the Dutch arthroplasty register

SchreursAbstract:Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is used increasingly in younger patients. There is little knowledge about the effect of THA characteristics on risk of revision, especially in young patients. Therefore, we studied the influence of both patient-related and surgical factors on the risk of revision using data from the Dutch Arthroplasty Registry (LROI). All patients younger than 55 years with a primary THA implanted in the Netherlands between 2007 and 2017 were selected (n = 19,682). The covariates age, sex, primary diagnosis, ASA-classification, surgical approach, fixation method, Bearing Type, head size and year of surgery were entered into Cox proportional hazards models to calculate hazard ratios for the risk of revision. The overall 5-year survival of primary THA was 95.3% (95% CI, 94.9–95.6). Use of the anterior approach resulted in a lower risk of revision than the use of the posterolateral approach (HR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.47–0.92). THAs with a head diameter ≥ 38 mm had a higher risk of revision (HR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.33–2.72) than THAs with 32 mm heads. Use of MoM Bearings resulted in an increased risk when compared to C-PE (HR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.27–2.43). The risk of revision in patients younger than 55 years depends on surgical approach, head size and Bearing Type. The anterior approach resulted in a decreased risk of revision, whereas use of ≥38 mm heads and MoM Bearings resulted in an increased risk of revision for any reason.

The effect of Bearing Type on the outcome of total hip arthroplasty.

ZijlstraAbstract:Background and purpose — Alternative Bearing surfaces such as ceramics and highly crosslinked polyethylene (HXLPE) were developed in order to further improve implant performance of total hip arthroplasties (THAs). Whether these alternative Bearing surfaces result in increased longevity is subject to debate.Patients and methods — Using the Dutch Arthroplasty Register (LROI), we identified all patients with a primary, non-metal-on-metal THA implanted in the Netherlands in the period 2007–2016 (n = 209,912). Cumulative incidence of revision was calculated to determine differences in survivorship of THAs according to Bearing Type: metal-on-polyethylene (MoPE), metal-on-HXLPE (MoHXLPE), ceramic-on-polyethylene (CoPE), ceramic-on-HXLPE (CoHXLPE), ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC), and oxidized-zirconium-on-(HXL)polyethylene (Ox(HXL)PE).
