  • How and why Beekeepers participate in the INSIGNIA citizen science honey bee environmental monitoring project

    In the “contributory” citizen science project INSIGNIA, Beekeepers carried out non-invasive sampling of their own honey bee colonies for an environmental investigation of pesticide residues and pollen plant origin. We surveyed several traits and attitudes of 69 of the volunteering Beekeepers from ten countries. We found that their motivation was similar to that found in previous studies of environmental volunteer motivation, with helping the environment and contributing to scientific knowledge being strong motivators. Our results suggest that receiving laboratory analysis results of the samples from their colonies is the most meaningful way of appreciation for Beekeepers, but is not their primary reason for participation. A citizen scientist beekeeper in this study spent on average 10.4 working hours on the project during a sampling season. Our study indicates that most of our volunteers would participate in similar future investigations, or would recommend participation to other Beekeepers, underlining the potential of Beekeepers as citizen scientists in honey bee research.

    Austrian Beekeepers frequently suffered severe colony losses during the last decade similar to trends all over Europe. This first surveillance study aimed to describe the health status of Austrian bee colonies and to analyze the reasons for losses for both the summer and winter season in Austria. In this study 189 apiaries all over Austria were selected using a stratified random sampling approach and inspected three times between July 2015 and spring 2016 by trained bee inspectors. The inspectors made interviews with the Beekeepers about their beekeeping practice and the history of the involved colonies. They inspected a total of 1596 colonies for symptoms of nine bee pests and diseases (four of them notifiable diseases) and took bee samples for varroa mite infestation analysis. The most frequently detected diseases were three brood diseases: Varroosis, Chalkbrood and Sacbrood. The notifiable bee pests Aethina tumida and Tropilaelaps spp. were not detected. During the study period 10.8% of the 1596 observed colonies died. Winter proved to be the most critical season, in which 75% of the reported colony losses happened. Risks for suffering summer losses increased significantly, when colonies were weak in July, had queen problems or a high varroa mite infestation level on bees in July. Risks for suffering winter losses increased significantly, when the colonies had a high varroa mite infestation level on bees in September, were weak in September, had a queen older than one year or the beekeeper had few years of beekeeping experience. However, the effect of a high varroa mite infestation level in September had by far the greatest potential to raise the winter losses compared to the other significant factors.

    Quantifying colony losses is a two-part process. First, colony loss data needs to be collected by surveying Beekeepers and then it needs to be calculated and reported in a standardized way. We propose using two different ways to calculate and communicate colony losses. The first we term the total colony losses, sometimes referred to as cumulative loss rate in other systems, which aggregates all losses suffered by all Beekeepers surveyed. While the total loss calculation is straightforward, calculating a 95% CI for this metric is complicated by the need to account for the varying sizes of responding Beekeepers operations and the nested nature of colony losses within those operations. The second reporting method is average loss is the mean loss suffered by each responding beekeeper. The utility of these two reporting mechanisms differ, in that both are potentially biased by the demographics of the apicultural industry; total loss figures are more heavily influenced by the losses experienced by the few large operations, while average losses are more representative of the many small operations. Additionally, it is important to note that the results from this survey are representative of the responding population alone, and cannot be considered representative of the industry unless some means of identifying and adjusting for varying response is performed.

    SummaryAlarmed by reports of high losses of honey bee colonies in other countries, and with no field data available for Austria, a mixed media survey on winter mortality of honey bee colonies was carried out in Austria for the overwintering periods of 2007–8 and 2008–9. In addition, the survey was extended to South Tyrol (Italy) in 2007–8. Data presented for 2007–8 were gathered at eight beekeeping conventions in Austria (374 Beekeepers; 16,217 colonies, representing 1.7% of Beekeepers and 5.8% of colonies, respectively) and one convention in South Tyrol (115 Beekeepers; 3,999 colonies, representing 3.7% of Beekeepers and 10.6% of colonies, respectively). During the overwintering period of 2007–8 we calculated a total loss of 13.3% of colonies in Austria, ranging from 9.2 to 17.1% in different regions. Overwintering mortality in South Tyrol was 12.3%.     Understanding amateur Beekeepers' perception of risks affecting bee health and mortality is essential to analyse the reasons for adopting or rejecting good management practices. A perception survey on how Beekeepers perceive and manage factors related to climate change, Varroa infestation, management practices, and pesticide exposure was designed and launched online. This unpreceded sociological survey involved 355 Beekeepers spread all over Belgium. A two-sample t test with unequal variances comparing Beekeepers with colony loss rates below or exceeding the acceptable level, that is <10% and ≥10%, indicates that Beekeepers (N = 213) with colony loss rates <10% generally have greater average levels of perceived risks and the benefits of action that lead to increased motivation to act in better ways. The results of this survey highlight the importance of looking beyond socio-economic determinants in any risk mitigation strategy associated with bee mortality when dealing with amateur Beekeepers.
