    Abstract:

    With the advent of rapidly emerging technologies, researchers need to be cognizant of developments and applications in the area of social media as a topic of investigatory interest. To date, scholarly research on the topic of Facebook, a ubiquitous social media site, is rather extensive. This study on Facebook, using a Bibliographic content analysis methodology of PsycINFO, found that instructional applications, user characteristics, health management, and social dynamics were emphasized by researchers. Interestingly, topics of high visibility in the mass media (e.g., privacy, self-disclosure, legal issues) are not areas of focus in scholarly investigations. Future studies should examine comparative analyses across interdisciplinary database Files. ********** Social networking websites have become a ubiquitous feature of modern life, particularly since the meteoric rise of Facebook (Shih, 2009; Wittkower, 2010). Indeed, websites like Facebook facilitate social presence, encourage social feedback, and enhance personal inter-connectivity (Cheung, Chiu, & Lee, 2011). Despite the fact that Facebook is a recent social phenomenon and business enterprise, scholarly research on this specific social networking website has proliferated at an exceptional pace over the past 5 years. Thus, it appears worthwhile to examine the cumulative scholarly literature on Facebook and determine the major areas that researchers are emphasizing in their investigatory efforts. One approach is to gauge evolving research trends in the psychological literature via PsycINFO, both general and specific (e.g., Casio & Aguinis, 2008). To that end, the current study reports the findings of a qualitative Bibliographic analysis of the extent literature in the social and behavioral sciences on prior research conducted on the topic of Facebook. Method The examination of research trends in the literature has served as a useful and informative exercise in addressing the popularity or shifts in attention on a host of topics of interest to both practitioners and researchers. A keyword search of the term 'Facebook' was performed in the scholarly database PsycINFO, on November 15,2011. This Bibliographic File is considered a major scholarly and academic database (see Piotrowski, 2007). Only articles and reference documents that were designated 'scholarly' sources were retained for further analyses (n= 346 citations). Based on the abstract of the noted reference, the author tagged the reference with a descriptor (e.g., security, self-disclosure, communication theory, politics, organizational, health management, user proFile) that best represented that main topical focus of the research. A frequency tally, across the main categories, was maintained and then tabulated for frequency counts on each descriptive category. Results and Discussion The current Bibliographic citation analysis indicates that a sizeable minority (about 33%) of the literature on the topic of Facebook is general in scope, or reports on esoteric issues. However, it appears that there is much specific emphasis on instructional and teaching applications related to Facebook (see Table 1). Moreover, researchers have an avid interest in personality factors (Ryan & Xenos, 2011), particularly in reference to self-professed 'proFile'. There also seems to be much focus in the use of Facebook as a medium in managing health maintenance regimens and treatment protocols. …

    Ten years ago, the libraries contributing to the UC union catalog, later to be known as the MELVYL catalog database, were divided into two distinct camps: users of RLG's RLIN system and users of Ohio's OCLC system. The busy folks at DLA thought that there was no greater busyness than keeping track of these two diverse systems. It is just as well that we did not know what the future had in store for us, that one day every library could have its own local library system, and that each of these systems would contribute independently to the union catalog. There have been many changes in the input to the union catalog; each one was a new challenge, and each has opened up positive avenues in our journey toward shared Bibliographic information. THE DEMISE OF THE CARD CATALOG The 1980s saw the end of the card catalog as a public access tool. The first years of database building in the early 1980s were characterized by the care and upkeep of elaborate "card proFiles" for each contributing library. The first tapes of MARC records that we received could really be viewed as a byproduct of the utility's card printing. At that time not many people had any use for the machine-readable MARC record. While these card proFiles had a limited set of options for library input, libraries found ways to overcome any perceived inadequacies in the card print schema. OCLC users were especially creative in devising ways to make the OCLC card print program turn out such curiosities as underlined notes and neat place holders for data that would be later written in by hand. Left-hand card margins were filled down to the last character position, and the proper input of call numbers in either OCLC or RLIN was an art form mastered by only a few people in each catalog department. Accomplishing all this required some bending of the utilities' MARC records, co-opting otherwise standard fields for nonstandard uses. As part of maintaining a union catalog, it was our responsibility to corral all of these bits of data into a form that would convey information uniformly in the online system. Where different UC libraries had selected different fields for essentially the same information ("Latest copy in ...," "oversize"), these notes had to be identified and moved to the same field in all union catalog records for online display. Programs for processing records at DLA not only had to know every location code and whether their display constants had changed over the years, but that there were anywhere from one to four places to look for a note beginning "Library Has:" in any given record. The libraries' difficulty with the card proFiles generally grew out of past practices. If certain notes had always snaked down the side of the card, the library needed to get that same note in the same place because that was where everyone expected to find it. There is a clear intellectual economy to uniformity in any kind of system, and the card catalog was no exception. The problem with cards is that once you've placed notes in a certain position on some number of cards you cannot change this placement without getting out the eraser and attacking all of the cards that need to changed--if you can even identify them. If the data have been properly coded, the online system can change the display of information in all records in the system. The card catalogs prevented us from making the best use of the machine-readable data that was being so painstakingly created. The card catalog could not be retired until the online catalog was equally broad as a system, that is, until everything or nearly everything in the card catalog had been converted to machine-readable form. As the online catalog gained scope, libraries hedged their bets by eliminating the filing of certain cards until some libraries got down to filing only a title card and a shelflist card. One-by-one, card catalogs were removed to make room for banks of online catalog stations. …

    Abstract:

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a process, as a proof-of-concept, that automates the tracking of updates to name authority records (NARs), the downloading of revised NARs into local catalog system, and subsequent Bibliographic File maintenance (BFM), in response to the programmatic manipulation of the Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF). Design/methodology/approach – A proof-of-concept process to automate NAR updates and BFM in local catalog, using OCLC LCNAF SRU Service, MARCEdit, XSLT, and AutoIt, is built and subsequently tested using data from both test and production catalog servers at Michigan State University Libraries. Findings – The proof-of-concept process tested is proved to be successful in general though scalability and diacritics issues have to be addressed before it can become fully operational in a production environment.
