    States that since 1980, UKOLN has been carrying out a survey to monitor the availability of Bibliographic Records in the BNB files on the British Library automated information service (Blaise). Work on the ordering stage sample is now to be extended by investigating the availability of Records from other sources of Bibliographic Records. Looks at the survey and the new sources to be included in the extended survey. Divides the participant sources (BNB, BDS, Book Data, J. Whitaker & Sons, BLCMP, CURL, LASER, OCLC and SLS (Information Systems) Ltd into two groups and describes the survey methodology and sample structure. Presents a set of source profiles which have been prepared as background material to accompany the results for each source since straight comparisons would not be advisable, given the differences in objectives and set‐up of the sources. Gives some comparisons of the features of different sources.

    Abstract:

    The British National Bibliography Machine Readable Cataloguing (BNBMARC) Currency Survey, carried out on the British Library database and using a sample obtained from a variety of public and academic libraries, is now entering its fifteenth year. The results of the survey provide a performance assessment indicator known as the hit rate. The variations in hit rate over the years are noted and possible causes are reviewed. The impact of a number of British Library initiatives (e.g., Currency with Coverage, Cataloguing-in-Publication Record purchase, Copyright Libraries Shared Cataloguing Programme) intended to improve the performance of the service are examined. Overall, the results of the survey indicate that the British Library has achieved a fairly high level of performance over the past few years; the sustainability of this level is difficult to predict. Finally, the possible influence of external factors on the performance level in the future is considered.

    ABSTRACT Using a random sample drawn from the political science collection at Southeast Missouri State University during a massive weeding project, the investigator examined whether an increase in the number of subject headings on Bibliographic Records translated into an increase in circulation. The answer was no. Indeed, instead of improving circulation, books with the highest number of subject headings considered in the study, i.e., five, circulated the least and had the highest incidence of not circulating at all. Other findings were: (a) the average number of subject headings per Bibliographic Record was 2.2, (b) the best circulation was for books with one and two subject headings, and (c) no matter the number of subject headings, most of the books only circulated once. To stop the downward slide in circulation, new strategies will need to be found.

    A paragraph description of "what the book is about" taken from Book Review Digest is used to evaluate information on the Bibliographic Record. It is first determined to what extent book descriptions match either subject headings or keywords in the title. Segments of the Bibliographic Record are then examined to determine their potential for retrieving the book described. The combination of approaches used to simulate manipulation of the data in the Record increased recall in the sample by 20%. Keyword matching in the personal name and corporate name subject fields is a way to increase both precision and recall.

    When an institution wishes to automate but does not have the financial resources to implement an online integrated system, one solution is to join forces with other libraries who have similar desires and needs. Since the online database is the foundation of all library automation, a shared database will be necessary in this type of cluster environment. This article discusses some of the problems encountered when Bibliographic Records are shared by a number of libraries, such as difficulties in information retrieval and Bibliographic control. Possible methods of dealing with the problems of joint input and database maintenance are then proposed.

    The Program for Cooperative Cataloging seeks to increase the availability of unique Records created in a decentralized fashion by a network of libraries according to mutually acceptable standards. A critical element in achieving its mission is the core Bibliographic Record, a cataloging Record that embodies the principles of usefulness, cost-effectiveness, and dynamism. The PCC intends that Program Records, full or core, represent acceptable Bibliographic control such that Record "tweaking" at the local level is minimized. Emphasis is on essential description and on the development of trust in others' Bibliographic Records, obviating the need for expensive revision and leveraging scarce cataloging resources for grappling with an expanding universe of challenges.
