    White cardboard box 118 x 78 x 47 mm to the top of which is affixed a label bearing the printed words Gelflex Triton Soft Lens Fitting Set and hand-written words Old Superceded.The side of the box bears a round label with Plano +2.00 written on it. The underside of the box bears #273 crossed out and T021. The box contains cardboard dividers and 6 metal capped vials each containing a clear or tinted (Aqua Handling Tint , Violet H/T or Blue H/T) soft contact Lens. Vials bear a white and silver label, the silver section of which is framed in red. This section bears the words Triton Translating Soft Bifocal Lens , Alpha, Gelflex Laboratories and Manufactured by Gelflex Laboratories Perth WA 6017 Australia. The right hand white sections have typewritten Lens parameters, the word trial, tint details and batch number ending in V which identifies the year of manufacture as 1998.   • Bifocal Lens control of myopic progression in children

    Abstract:

    Free to read Bifocal spectacle Lenses have been used as a strategy to slow myopic progression in children since the 1950s and perhaps earlier. The reported success of this strategy varies greatly, as does the design of studies reporting the outcomes of their use—from earlier retrospective analysis of records to later prospective clinical trials. Collectively, published data support the suggestion that Bifocal Lenses inhibit myopic development in children but only by a small amount and only in a subset of children. Possible reasons for the greatly varying outcomes include a lack of individualism of the treatment and failure to take the vergence system into account. This review summarises the results of Bifocal and multifocal studies, describes how accommodation, convergence and their interaction are linked to myopic development and details how a Bifocal treatment that takes this into account may be devised. Also discussed is whether alterations to peripheral retinal blur contribute to Bifocal Lens effects

    This research investigated underlying issues that were critical to the success of the Bifocal trial and comprised of three studies. The first study evaluated if Chinese-Canadian children were suitable subjects for the Bifocal trial. The high prevalence of myopia in Chinese children suggests that genetic input plays a role in myopia development, but the rapid increase in prevalence over the last few decades indicates environmental factors are also important. Since this Bifocal trial was conducted in Canada, this work aimed to determine whether Chinese children who had migrated to Canada would still have high myopia prevalence and a high rate of myopia progression. The second study determined the optimal Bifocal Lens power for myopia treatment and the effect of incorporating base-in prism into the Bifocal. In the majority of published myopia control studies, the power of the prescribed near addition was usually predetermined in the belief that the near addition would always help to improve the near focus. In fact, the effect of near addition on the accommodative error might be quite different even for individuals in which the same magnitude of accommodation lag had been measured. Therefore, this work was necessary to guide the selection of Bifocal and prism powers most suitable for the subsequent Bifocal trial. The third study, the ultimate goal of this research, was to conduct a longitudinal clinical trial to determine if Bifocals and prismatic Bifocals could control myopia progression in children

The team has an overall record of 11 wins & 1 loss. The Chiefs travelled to Coaldale on Fri. night & defeated the Coaldale/Picture Butte team 12-3. S. Nishikawa & A. Wamboldt scored 4 goals each, J. Well, we have chosen them, but the outcome was not, in my opinion, given a fair chance. As usual the hierarchy made the final decision, the majority agreed with the name but not the logo. The executive disagree and said you couldn't mix and match the name and the logo and thus the decision was made. I would just like to express my disappointment & frustration with the process. The chosen name & logo could be construed as being racial & prejudicial as it was in the NHL, where it was taken to the courts and the streets. Heaven knows we have enough of that already. I understand that several people probably thought my letter was unfounded, chicken hearted and untrue. It was my understanding that several people who attended the 1st Meeting were unhappy and not united with the entire decision, therefore, I felt maybe additional clarification was needed. Well this week I would like to report that the Executive called another meeting of all interested individuals to attend a clarification meeting and I would say it was very successful! Everyone present left with the same understanding as to why the name and logo were chosen & a unanimous decision was made to support & promote them both. I took on the role of a devil's advocate in order to achieve unity. I trust this has been accomplished. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the executive for their hard work and dedication to minor hockey and I would like to congratulate them on finally moving forward on the jersey purchase, and making it a reality.     Purpose: To experimentally compare the optical performance of three types of hydrophobic intraocular Lenses (IOLs): extended depth of focus (TECNIS Symfony), Bifocal (TECNIS ZMB00), and trifocal (FineVision GFree). Setting: Rothschild Foundation Paris, France - Liege Space Center Liège, Belgique Methods: Surface topography was analyzed by optical microscopy. Modulation transfer function (MTF) and spherical aberrations were determined on optical bench for variable pupil apertures and with two cornea models (0 µm and +0.28 µm). United States Air Force target imaging was analyzed for different focal points (near, intermediate, and far). Point spread function (PSF) and halos were quantified and compared. Results: All Lenses presented step-like optic topography. For a pupil size of = 3 mm, distinctive MTF peaks were observed for all Lenses: two peaks for the extended depth of focus and Bifocal Lenses with +1.75 and +4.00 diopters (D) addition, respectively, and three peaks for the trifocal Lens with +1.75 and +3.50 addition for intermediate and near vision, respectively. The extended depth of focus and Bifocal Lens had slightly higher MTF at best focus with the +0.28 µm cornea model than with the 0 µm model, whereas the trifocal Lens was likely to be more independent of the corneal spherical aberrations. Conclusions: Each Lens appears to rely on light diffraction for optical performance, presenting halos with comparable intensities. For small pupil apertures, the MTF peaks for the far and intermediate focal distances of the trifocal and extended depth of focus Lenses overlap, but the trifocal Lens presented an additional MTF peak for the near focal points

    Abstract:

    Winner, opened the second conference of the Council of National Asso-ciations with a call to scientists the world-over to come together and con-front ever-deepening global problems. Some of the most serious chal-lenges facing mankind-- climate change, energy crisis, and disease – stem from processes that transcend national boundaries and social divi-sions, yet the tools to tackle them are still largely locked within national boundaries and controlled by powerful, vested interests. The problem, Dr. Lee insisted, is not so much globalization but its incompleteness. Devel-oping global communities along with global governance is necessary for tackling global problems. We can no longer retreat back to an insular lo-calism, so we must move forward to realize the potentials of a more com-plete and complex globalization. He posed the challenge to sociology: how did we respond? As sociologists we specialize in studying the downside of globaliza-tion, the obstacles to a globalization that will benefit humanity. We are experts in the ways inequality and domination present the deepest barriers to tackling the daunting challenges of our epoch. We postulate conditions for overcoming such barriers while criticizing false solutions that redis-tribute rather than diminish the ill-effects incomplete globalization. It is the presumption of this conference that for sociologists to address the exclusion and oppression underlying poverty and war, disease and envi-ronmental degradation on a global scale, our scientific community must itself first assume a global character ruled by dialogue and accountability We gathered together in Taipei, therefore, to examine our own discipline through the Bifocal Lens of domination and inequality – a risky but neces-sary project-- so as to create and embrace a global sociology that is equal to the global tasks we face. 1 I am grateful to Emma Porio for her comments on an earlier version of this paper
