  • The Development of Straw-Based Biomass Power Generation in Rural Area in Northeast China—An Institutional Analysis Grounded in a Risk Management Perspective
    Sustainability, 2020
    Co-Authors: Lingling Wang, Tsunemi Watanabe
    Abstract:

Given a lack of consideration for the role and importance of stakeholders and the importance of stakeholders in the operation of Biomass Power plants in China, a comprehensive analysis oriented toward stakeholder risk management is needed to further develop the country’s Biomass energy industry. Accordingly, we analyzed institutional factors that contribute to or constrain progress in Biomass Power generation in China. Data were collected from 275 straw suppliers (farmers) living around a Biomass Power plant, 15 middlemen, five Power plant managers, and five local government officers. Interviews were held with all the participants, but questionnaires were additionally administered to the straw suppliers. Results showed that: (1) risk transfer in the Biomass supply chain is one of the reasons why farmers are unwilling to supply straw; (2) middlemen are vital intermediaries between Biomass Power plant managers and farmers as a middleman-based Biomass supply system is necessary to guarantee the quantity of straw supply, and; (3) the institutional structure that underlies the Chinese Biomass energy industry is immature.

  • Monetization of External Costs Using Lifecycle Analysis—A Comparative Case Study of Coal-Fired and Biomass Power Plants in Northeast China
    Energies, 2015
    Co-Authors: Lingling Wang, Tsunemi Watanabe
    Abstract:

In this study, the structures of external costs are built in line with coal-fired and Biomass Power plant life cycle activities in Northeast China. The external cost of coal-fired and Biomass Power plants was compared, using the lifecycle approach. In addition, the external costs of a Biomass Power plant are calculated for each stage for comparison with those of a coal-fired Power plant. The results highlight that the external costs of a coal-fired plant are 0.072 US $/kWh, which are much higher than that of a Biomass Power plant, 0.00012 US$/kWh. The external cost of coal-fired Power generation is as much as 90% of the current price of electricity generated by coal, while the external cost of a Biomass Power plant is 1/1000 of the current price of electricity generated by Biomass. In addition, for a Biomass Power plant, the external cost associated with SO2, NOX, and PM2.5 are particularly lower than those of a coal-fired Power plant. The prospect of establishing precise estimations for external cost mechanisms and sustainable energy policies is discussed to show a possible direction for future energy schemes in China. The paper has significant value for supporting the Biomass Power industry and taxing or regulating coal-fired Power industry to optimize the energy structure in China

  • Design and optimization of Biomass Power plant
Chemical Engineering Research and Design, 2014
Co-Authors: Tesfaldet Gebregerges Gebreegziabher, Adetoyese Olajire Oyedun, Ho Ting Luk, Tsz Ying Gene Lam, Yu Zhang, Chi Wai Hui
    Abstract:

Abstract Among the renewable energy sources, Biomass offers some benefits due to its low cost and presumed zero-carbon emission when compared with fossil fuels. However, the moisture content of Biomass is often high that lowers its heating value, reduces the combustion temperature and causes operational problems. Because of these, when burning Biomass for Power generation, Biomass is often dried prior to the combustion. To lower the drying cost or to maximize the Power output of a Biomass Power plant, proper heat integration in between the steam Power plant and the drying process has to be considered. In this work, heat integration studies are performed to a Biomass Power plant that burns empty fruit bunches (EFB) as fuel. Composite curves of all studied cases are plotted to visualize the intensity and to identify opportunities of heat integration among the drying and Power generation systems. A multi-stage drying process is proposed that employs steam and waste-heat from the Power plant and the drying process, respectively. Results of this study show that with proper drying and heat integration, the overall efficiency of a Biomass Power plant can be significantly improved.

  • Optimal site selection of straw Biomass Power plant under 2-dimension uncertain linguistic environment
    Journal of Cleaner Production, 2019
    Co-Authors: Xiaokun Sun, Jianli Zhou
    Abstract:

Abstract The optimal site selection is extremely important for straw Biomass Power plant. Uncertainty composed of fuzziness and randomness is an important issue in the site selection under increasingly complex environments. The 2-dimension linguistic information is a Powerful tool to express the fuzziness of information, and meanwhile, the cloud model depicts the randomness of information with three numerical characteristics perfectly. Combining them together, this paper proposes the specialized decision framework of straw Biomass Power plant site selection. Firstly, a comprehensive set of index system is established to meet the need of scientific and reasonable evaluation. Secondly, the paper combines three-parameter interval number and order relation to determine the index weight, the importance of each factor is calculated. Thirdly, this paper uses the 2-dimension uncertain linguistic variable group decision-making model which solves the bias caused by individuals, fully expresses expert opinions and reflects the psychological states well, reduces the information missing. Finally, the paper proposes the specialized decision framework of straw Biomass Power plant site selection which clearly standardizes the decision-making process, provides the project managers with executable and real solutions. The results show that the model is very effective to study the straw Biomass Power plant site selection and is well worth popularizing in the future studies.

  • Spatial optimization of Biomass Power plant site using fuzzy analytic network process
Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy, 2018
Co-Authors: Mehri Davtalab, Ali Asghar Alesheikh
    Abstract:

Electricity has a significant role in the sustainable development of societies. Traditional methods of generating electricity face several challenges. The ever-increasing demand for electricity generation on the one hand, and the lack of adequate resources for fossil fuels on the other, has led to the use of renewable energy. Biomass is a renewable energy supply that can be used in electricity generation for a sustainable environment. This study aims to introduce a multi-criteria decision-making framework which integrates a geographical information system with a fuzzy analytic network process together with weighted linear combination to optimize the location of a Biomass Power plant in Guilan Province, Iran. For this purpose, the environmental and socioeconomic factors were identified, and the main contributing criteria were selected. The results showed that about 27.73 and 41.06% of the region has high or moderate suitability, respectively, for constructing a Biomass Power plant. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was performed to investigate the robustness of the outcomes of decision making by changing the weighting of the criteria. Results indicated that the ranking of alternative locations is independent of the weights chosen.
