Potential of Birch (Betula pendula Roth and B. pubescens Ehrh.) for Forestry and Forest-based Industry Sector within the Changing Climatic and Socio-economic Context of Western Europe

Nowadays, there is a strong need to consider a wider diversity of tree species, as evidenced by the impact of climate change and the forest health crises over the past decades. In this context, this study focuses on the potential of Birch (Betula pendula Roth and Betula pubescens Ehrh.), a neglected indigenous species, for forestry and the forest-based industry sector. We have therefore compiled, analyzed, and discussed literature regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the species and the opportunities and threats of its use for this purpose. Among the strengths, Birch tolerates various climates and sites, and high genetic variability promotes its adaptability. Birch improves forest resilience by colonizing forest gaps and quickly increasing soil functioning and biodiversity. Birch is also remarkably resistant to game overpopulation-associated damage. Large-sized logs are produced within relatively short periods with proper silvicultural treatment, and the wood characteristics allow versatile and valuable uses, as shown in Northern Europe. However, its weaknesses include high sensitivity to crown competition and to wood rot as challenges for silviculture. Among the opportunities, Birch is well-suited to the global changes with its adaptability to climate change and its possible integration in diverse productive mixed tree stands. In the context of societal evolutions and customer perceptions, Birch wood could play an increasing role in the building and furniture sectors, and among non-wood forest products. In Western Europe, the main obstacle to Birch development is the lack of information on the wood uses and, consequently, the lack of interest among forest managers and wood processing professionals, which have led to a poor quality of the resource and to insufficient demand for its wood. Inter- and Intra-Specific Variation in Stem Phloem Phenolics of Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) and European White Birch (Betula pendula)

HermsAbstract:Outbreaks of bronze Birch borer (BBB) ( Agrilus anxius ), a wood-boring beetle endemic to North America, have been associated with widespread mortality of Birch ( Betula spp.). There is substantial inter- and intra-specific variation in Birch resistance to BBB. Species endemic to North America, such as paper Birch ( B. papyrifera ), have coevolved with BBB and are more resistant than European and Asian Birch species, such as European white Birch ( B. pendula ), which lack an evolutionary history with BBB. Borer larvae feed on stem phloem tissue. Therefore, in search of potential resistance mechanisms against BBB, we compared the constitutive phenolic profile of stem phloem tissue of paper Birch with that of European white Birch. We also analyzed intraspecific variation in phenolic composition among clones and/or half-siblings of both species. Three phenolics (coumaroylquinic acid, betuloside pentoside A, and a diarylheptanoid hexoside) were detected only in paper Birch, and concentrations of six other phenolics were significantly higher in paper Birch. These differences may contribute to the high resistance of paper Birch to BBB relative to European white Birch. There was significant intraspecific variation in four of 17 phenolics found in paper Birch and in five of 14 found in European white Birch, but clones and half-siblings within each species could not be distinguished by phenolic composition using multivariate analysis.

Both species have a wide natural distribution area on the Eurasian continent, ranging from the Atlantic to eastern Siberia. Although Birches occur throughout almost the whole of Europe, the most abundant Birch resources are in the temperate and boreal forests of Northern Europe. In the Baltic and Nordic countries, the proportion of Birch out of the total volume of the growing stock varies between 11 and 28 per cent. In Northern Europe, Birch is commercially the most important broadleaved tree species. Birches are light-demanding early successional pioneer species, which grow both in mixed stands and in pure stands. This article provides an overview of the most important ecological characteristics and typical growth and yield patterns of Birch, based on European scientifi c literature. Growth and yield research on Birch has been relatively active in Northern Europe, where numerous growth and yield models have been developed during the last decades. In this paper, a list of published scientifi c articles on growth modelling is provided and is grouped according to the different types of model. When growing in forest stands, Birches have a relatively straight slender stem form. The current practices and silvicultural recommendations, based on research directed at high-quality timber production in silver Birch stands, are reviewed. Although the emphasis is on even-aged pure silver Birch stands, the management of mixed stands as well as the silviculture of downy Birch and curly Birch are also briefl y discussed.
