    Abstract:

    The variation in near-surface ground-ice content of the uppermost 1 m of permafrost was examined by drilling at 71 sites within the Kendall Island Bird Sanctuary of the outer Mackenzie Delta, Northwest Territories. Permafrost has aggraded in coastal low-lying alluvial wetlands during the last 1500 to 500 years, and high near-surface ground-ice contents have developed in this saturated environment. In contrast, the ground ice in upland terrain has accumulated since the early Holocene. Permafrost in these uplands has a mean excess-ice content of 24%, lower than in the alluvial wetlands (34%), and ground-ice distribution is inherently more variable in upland terrain than in lowlands. Gravimetric moisture content is statistically related to soil organic-matter content, but the organic-matter content confounds the relation between gravimetric moisture and excess-ice content due to its low bulk density. Topographically controlled moisture availability and soil organic-matter content are important to ground-ice distribution in uplands, given the order of magnitude increase in gravimetric moisture contents downslope, and the occurrence of massive ice lenses over 50 cm thick at the base of slopes. The potential mean subsidence of alluvial wetlands due to thawing of the uppermost 1 m of permafrost is 34 cm.     Seasonal fluctuations in population size reflect breeding patterns and movements of Birds, but distinguishing residents from itinerant Birds is difficult with partially migratory species such as Kittlitz’s Plover. We determined changes in the size of Kittlitz’s Plover populations in two microhabitats (Goose Point and Sandy Beach) at Barberspan Bird Sanctuary, North West province, South Africa, where we ringed waders between February 2008 and May 2010. Using a Bayesian model, we estimated the population of this species at these two sites from capture–recapture data gathered in eight 3- to 12-day collection periods. The estimated adult population at Goose Point peaked at 161 in October 2009, but decreased to about 40 in March 2009 and March 2010. The immature population peaked at 119 in January–February 2010. This, along with observations of nests and chicks, suggests that residents bred at Goose Point from September to March. The estimated number of adults at Sandy Beach increased from 48 in March 2010 to 380 in April 2010. Adults captured there in April 2010 formed feeding flocks and were heavier than the resident Birds at Goose Point. These results suggest that Barberspan Bird Sanctuary supports resident and itinerant populations that are partially segregated in different microhabitats. OSTRICH 2011, 82(3): 207–215

    Abstract:

    The white-tailed Lapwing, Vanellus leucurus, is a species of Bird which is listed by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Least Concern, winter visitor to India and breed in Central Asia and Southern Russia. It is occasionally sighted in the western region of Maharashtra State, Gujarat, Rajasthan, India, but hardly ever documented. There is no record of its presence in the study area. In this note, the first sighting record of the white-tailed Lapwing at Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh was reported.     Abstract:

    Spiders are eight legged arthropods belonging to the order Araneae of the class Arachnida and Phylum Arthropoda. The present study was carried out to investigate the diversity of spiders in Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary which is a large wetland located in Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh, India, covering an area of about 224.60 hectares. The study was conducted from May 2016 to October 2016. During this study a total of 55 Spider species were identified belonging to 41 genera & 14 families. Out of this, majority of spiders were belonging to family Araneidae (~20%) followed by Salticidae (~18%) and Lycosidae (~10%). Total species reported here represents about 23% of total spider families found in India.

    Abstract:

    Diversity refers variety in nature i.e. the variety of life on Earth and its biological diversity is commonly referred to as biodiversity. Sandi Bird Sanctuary was developed and conserved in the year 1990 as natural biodiversity hub for aquatic vegetation as well as local residents and migratory Birds. This Sanctuary has an area of 309 hectares. A study of faunal diversity in Sandi Bird Sanctuary was done during January 2013 to March 2014. Sandi Bird Sanctuary is well known as popular tourist destination because of the diverse assemblage of avifauna especially migratory water Birds that congregate at the Sandi Bird Sanctuary in winter. The result includes 3 species of annelids belonging to 3 orders, 10 orders of insects with 61 species, 4 species of mollusks belonging to 3 orders, 11 species of fishes belonging to 5 families, 3 species of amphibians and 15 species of reptiles belonging to 13 families, 157 species of Birds, and 12 species of mammals belonging to 09 families from Sandi Bird Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is an envoy area of the Indo-gangetic eco-system. Wetland vegetation is also found in the Sanctuary.

    A study of faunal diversity in Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary was done during January 2013 to December 2013. This Sanctuary has an area of 224.60 hectares. The state and nature of the habitat plays a crucial role in diversity and population composition of fauna in study area. For their basic needs, food, roosting and breeding etc., various fauna prefer this site. According to this study Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is an ideal wetland. The result includes 150 species of Birds belonging to 17 orders and 46 families, 10 orders of insects with 61species, 12 species of fishes belonging to 5 families, 16 species of reptiles, 3 species of amphibians belonging to 14 families, 4 species of mollusks belonging to 3 orders, 3 species of annelids belonging to 3 orders and 12 species of mammals belonging to 10 families from Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary. All these faunal species depend on the wetland flora and fauna and nearby agriculture fields.

  • Systematics of Plankton Diversity in Thol Bird Sanctuary, Inland Wetlands, Gujarat

    Abstract:

    Thol Bird Sanctuary in Kaditaluka (Mehsana district) of North Gujarat is among eighth national wetland sites in India which has been identified and declared for conservation. Plankton samples collected using 20 nm mesh size nylon plankton net had presence of total 14 phytoplankton and 22 zooplankton taxa identified from six sampling locations. Phytoplankton diversity showed that the Aphanocapsa sp. (fam:Cynophyceae) and Ankistrodesmus sp. (fam: Chlorophyceae) were dominating genera. Among zooplankton Arthropoda group had maximum members in all the sites followed by rotifers, protozoans and nematods. These studies showed that the wetlands had the presence of some of the indicative species which categorizes water quality to be slightly polluted to polluted conditions.

    Abstract:

    Status of water quality for wetlands of Thol Bird Sanctuary of Mehsana district (Gujarat State), India, was studied for one season. The 19 parameters were analysed to understand the water quality of the man made inland wetlands. The monitoring of water quality of wetlands of Thol brought out the degraded status of the wetlands. Wetlands nutritional status analysed showed it to be oligotrophic in nature. Whereas few sites indicates slightly polluted to polluted condition as there was presence of high biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solids. This could have impact on the existing dependent biodiversity of the wetlands specifically avifaunal diversity.
