raymond carver s short fiction in the history of Black Humor
2006Co-Authors: Jingqiong ZhouAbstract:This first book-length study on the Black Humor in Raymond Carver's work includes valuable interpretations of Carver's aesthetics as well as the psycho-social implications of his short fiction. The presence of an indeterminate « menace in the oppressive situations of Black Humor in Carver - as compared to a European tradition of existentialist writing and his American predecessors including Twain, Heller, Barth and others - is mitigated through Humor so it is not dominant. As a result, a subtle promise emerges in the characters' lives.

Black Humor:A kind of Deconstructive Strategy——Comparing the Narrative Methods in Heller and Yu Hua’s Novels
Journal of Zhejiang University of Technology, 2007Co-Authors: Chu Bei-juanAbstract:In the post-modern context, there are some similarities in the writing style of narrative methods in novels of Heller and Yu Hua. When putting them on the same reaching level, you can find that the differences in isomorphism and the homogeneity in discrepancy. Heller described more about the absurdity of the world while Yu Hua wrote more about the suffering. The "absurdity" caused the "suffering", and the "suffering" marked the "absurdity". They are like the two sides of a coin, reflecting the "oppression of existence". Unlike the common authors, the valuable points of Heller and Yu Hua are that they not only show us the life in which the "oppression" cannot be borne, but also make Black Humor as the prescription to remove the "oppression of existence" — Heller used it to relieve the pressure of scaring and Yu Hua used it to lighten the difficulties of life. "Oppression of existence" is eliminated in "Black Humor" and "smile with tear".

Black Humor in Raymond Carver's Short Stories
Journal of Hubei Radio & Television University, 2009Co-Authors: Wu Duan-minAbstract:Raymond Carver's short stories, which represent the best written and most beloved ones in the writings of our time, have boost his reputation from that of a central figure of neo-realism in American fiction to an international icon of American literary values. The popularity of his short stories inevitably draws a lot of critical attention. The essay would focus on the Black Humor in his short stories. Two stories would be selected, namely,"Careful" and "What's in Alaska?" With the introduction of Black Humor, which seeks a comic perspective on tragic facts, pessimism is diluted. The characters and the experiences of them in Carver's short stories somehow provide footnote for this Black Humor attitude.
