a comparative evaluation of some Blood Sugar lowering agents of plant origin
Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 1999Co-Authors: R R ChattopadhyayAbstract:A comparison of Blood Sugar lowering activity of four important medicinal plants (Azadirachta indica, Gymnema sylvestre, Catharanthus roseus and Ocimum sanctum) were carried out against normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat models. The plant extracts decreased the Blood Sugar level in varying degrees. Blood Sugar lowering unit (BLU) of activity of each leaf extract and tolbutamide was calculated by ED50 values. Statistical analysis revealed significant (P < 0.05) variation among the treatments as well as doses with regard to their Blood Sugar lowering capacity. A. indica leaf extract was found to have the most potent Blood Sugar-lowering activity followed by C. roseus, G. sylvestre and O. sanctum.

STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE Blood Sugar LEVELS AND MICROFLORA IN DIABETIC MOUSE MODEL.
Modern Preventive Medicine, 2005Co-Authors: Pan Su-huaAbstract:Objective:To discuss the relationship between the Blood Sugar levels and microflora,changing in the whole experiment process,by establishing the diabetic mouse model and treating with two types of substances that reduce the Blood Sugar levels.Methods: The diabetic mouse model was established by injecting Streptozotocin(STZ) in abdominal cavity.The numerical value of Blood Sugar and microflora was measured during the experiments,and then the relativity was discussed by the means of statistics method.Results: When Blood Sugar levels were beyond the nomal range(11.1 mmol/L,P0.05),probiotics(Bifidobacterium,Lactobacillus) and Clostridium significantly decreased(P0.05).Through oral administration of the hypoglycemic substances,the Blood Sugar levels,probiotics and Clostridium resumed the normal rang(P0.05).It was noteworthy that Enterobacter, Enterococcus and Fungus were always at the high level(P0.05).Conclusions: The various hypoglycemic substances are able to develop the same change on microflora.The change of the Blood Sugar levels are contrary to probiotics.Microflora may play an important role during occurring and/or develop in Diabetes mellitus.

Real-Time Statistical Modeling of Blood Sugar

One major challenge in the control of Diabetes is the real time determination of the proper insulin dose. In this paper, we develop a prototype for real time Blood Sugar control, integrated with the cloud. Our system controls Blood Sugar by observing the Blood Sugar level and accordingly determining the appropriate insulin dose based on patient's historical data, all in real time and automatically. To determine the appropriate insulin dose, we propose two statistical models for modeling Blood Sugar profiles, namely ARIMA and Markov-based model. Our experiment used to evaluate the performance of the two models shows that the ARIMA model outperforms the Markov-based model in terms of prediction accuracy.

It was found in the studies that many edible fungal polysaccharides have good effect on reducing Blood Sugar, i.e. it could reduce Blood Sugar through the promotion of the secretion of insulin, improvement of the insulin resistance, acceleration of the metabolism of liver glucose and the utilization of glucose on peripheral tissue, and the reduction of the absorption of glucose and other channels.
