    Abstract:

    Abstract Bone Tool-use by Early Pleistocene hominins is at the centre of debates in human evolution. It is especially the case in South Africa, where 102 Bone Tools have been described from four Early Stone Age archaeological sites, which have yielded Oldowan and possibly Acheulean artefacts, as well as Paranthropus robustus and early Homo remains. Here we describe a Bone Tool from Cooper’s D. The deposit, dated between 1.4 and 1.0 Ma, has yielded seven P. robustus remains and 50 stone artefacts. Our results highlight similarities in morphology and use-wear patterns between the Cooper’s D Bone Tool and those previously identified at nearby Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai and Drimolen. Our findings increase the number of Early Stone Age Bone Tools and provide further evidence of their association with P. robustus. They suggest P. robustus had the cognitive capacities to develop this cultural adaptation and the manipulative abilities to implement it.

    Abstract Here we present the results of a techno-functional analysis of 17 Bone Tools recovered from strata 6, 5 and 3 of the Palaeolithic site of Ma'anshan Cave, Guizhou Province, southern China. Stratum 6, dated to c. 35 cal kyr BP, has yielded three sharp awls. From Stratum 5, dated to c. 34 cal kyr BP, come six probable spear points, awls and a cutting Tool. Separated from these layers by a sterile horizon, Stratum 3, dated 23 cal kyr BP to 18 cal kyr BP, has yielded barbed points of two types. Bone Tools were shaped by scraping, grinding, and in strata 5 and 3, finished by polishing. Ma'anshan Cave records the oldest formal Bone Tools from China, and amongst the oldest known evidence of indisputable barbed point manufacture outside Africa. Change in the hunting Toolkit between strata 5 and 3 may indicate a shift in prey preference from medium to small size mammals and fish, which needs to be verified by supplementary analyses. The significance of this evidence is discussed in the context of what is known about the origin of Bone Tool technology in Africa and Eurasia.

    Abstract Twenty-eight Bone Tools were recovered in situ from ca. 70 ka year old Middle Stone Age levels at Blombos Cave between 1992 and 2000. These Tools are securely provenienced and are the largest collection to come from a single African Middle Stone Age site. Detailed analyses show that Tool production methods follow a sequence of deliberate technical choices starting with blank production, the use of various shaping methods and the final finishing of the artefact to produce “awls” and “projectile points”. Tool production processes in the Middle Stone Age at Blombos Cave conform to generally accepted descriptions of “formal” techniques of Bone Tool manufacture. Comparisons with similar Bone Tools from the Later Stone Age at Blombos Cave, other Cape sites and ethnographic collections show that although shaping methods are different, the planning and execution of Bone Tool manufacture in the Middle Stone Age is consistent with that in the late Holocene. The Bone Tool collection from Blombos Cave is remarkable because Bone Tools are rarely found in African Middle or Later Stone Age sites before ca. 25 ka. Scarcity of early Bone Tools is cited as one strand of evidence supporting models for nonmodern behaviour linked to a lack of modern technological or cognitive capacity before ca. 50 ka. Bone artefacts are a regular feature in European sites after ca. 40 ka, are closely associated with the arrival of anatomically modern humans and are a key behavioural marker of the Upper Palaeolithic “symbolic explosion” linked to the evolution of modern behaviour. Taken together with recent finds from Klasies River, Katanda and other African Middle Stone Age sites the Blombos Cave evidence for formal Bone working, deliberate engraving on ochre, production of finely made bifacial points and sophisticated subsistence strategies is turning the tide in favour of models positing behavioural modernity in Africa at a time far earlier than previously accepted.

    catalaAquest treball proposa una primera aproximacio al coneixement de l’explotacio dins l’ambit domestic dels recursos animals per part dels habitants menorquins de l’edat del Bronze, la qual es realitza a partir de l’estudi del conjunt faunistic recuperat a la naveta d’habitacio de cala Blanca. Aquest jaciment, situat a la costa occidental de Menorca, va ser excavat entre 1986 i 1993, i va oferir una cronologia de mitjans del II mil·lenni cal aC. Les especies presents son eminentment els mamifers domestics tradicionals. Entre aquestes, i malgrat el predomini numeric del binomi cabra/ovella, s’ha de remarcar la importancia del ramat bovi. La comparacio amb contextos coetanis de l’illa de Mallorca, especialment el de Canyamel, revel·la unes semblances marcades. Finalment, s’ha de destacar el conjunt d’utensilis d’os present al jaciment. EnglishThis paper proposes a first approach to the knowledge of the domestic exploitation of animal resources by the Menorcan inhabitants of the Bronze Age, which is made through the study of the faunal assemblage recovered in the dwelling naveta of Cala Blanca. This site, located on the west coast of Menorca, was excavated between 1986 and 1993, and offered a chronology of the mid-second millennium cal BC. Nearly all the species identified are the traditional domestic mammals. Among these, despite the numerical dominance of the binomial goat/sheep, we must stress the importance of cattle. Comparison with contemporary contexts of the island of Mallorca, especially the one from Canyamel, reveals some marked similarities. Finally, the Bone Tool assemblage from this site has to be noted.

    Abstract:

    The nature of Paleolithic cultures in South China and their relationship with mainland Southeast Asia remains ill-defined. The lithic industry of South China has been characterized as a simple ‘cobble-Tool’ industry, persisting from the early Pleistocene to the Holocene, while the most representative Southeast Asian industry was also marked by a pebble-Tool techno-complex, the Hoabinhian, during the Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene. A possible cultural link between the two regions has been proposed by some scholars but the technological characteristics of the two industries remained elusive, as did the variability within them. In this paper we conduct technological analysis of a ‘cobble-Tool’ industry associated with a Bone Tool technology from Luobi Cave, Hainan Island, dated to c. 11–10 ka, and compare it with the well-studied typical Hoabinhian site of Laang Spean in Cambodia. While there is a slight similarity in operational sequence (chaine operatoire), a major difference is that the Luobi Cave site can be rejected as a potential Hoabinhian site. The excavated material indicates a high degree of innovation and demonstrates a new sort of variability in the Tool-kit of modern human groups during the Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene transition in South China and Southeast Asia. This study represents an initial attempt to decipher the technological cultural variability in this region. We suggest that the emergence of behavioral modernity and cultural variability should be evaluated at both regional and sub-regional scales, instead of defining them as uniform, progressive and incremental, processes. Here we present, firstly, the variability of operational sequences (chaines operatoires) within the lithic production of Luobi Cave, and then compare this assemblage with typical and well-studied Hoabinhian assemblages from Laang Spean Cave in Cambodia to make clear the regional variability or complexity of human technological behaviors. Secondly, we then discuss the role of these technological behaviors as strategies for adapting to diverse ecology and environments from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene.

    En este trabajo se presentan los resultados del análisis de la colección del Túmulo II del Brazo Largo (Delta Inferior del Paraná), datada en circa 750 años 14C AP. El registro arqueofaunístico se caracteriza por el predominio de Blastocerus dichotomus, seguido de Myocastor coypus, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris y peces. Se registró también un abundante y diverso conjunto de carnívoros, con evidencias de una intensa actividad de cuereo. Los artefactos óseos exhiben una amplia variedad de grupos morfológicos y evidencias de todo el proceso de manufactura de los cabezales de arpón. El conjunto cerámico se caracteriza por el predominio de formas abiertas, de tamaño mediano, paredes rectas y bases convexas. Las variantes del inciso y los elementos de diseño son similares a los referidos por otros autores para el Delta Inferior, pero algunas representaciones decorativas exhiben una distribución espacial más amplia. El conjunto lítico comprende artefactos picados y/o abradidos con escasa formatización, artefactos fracturados reciclados y piezas agotadas.La tecnología ósea, lítica y cerámica essemejante a la de otros sitios arqueológicos del Delta Inferior. The lithic assemblage comprises ground stone Tools with little effort invested in their shaping, recycled broken artefacts and worn-out pieces. The Bone, lithic and ceramic technology is similar to that described for other archaeological sites in the Lower Delta.
