1998Co-Authors: Tony G Kwan, Yafu J DingAbstract:A system for enabling Booting to a desired drive of a computer system having a floppy drive, an IDE/EIDE storage drive, and a SCSI storage drive. The system includes a floppy disk that is configured to be inserted into the floppy drive. The floppy disk contains a media containing program instructions that are configured to be executed upon initiating a system BIOS of the computer system. The execution of the program instructions includes executing a Boot Code stored on the media of the floppy disk. The Boot Code is configured to scan a number of PCI buses of the computer system to identify host adapters that are connected to respective ones of the number of PCI buses. Further, the system includes executing a BIOS Code for each of the host adapters which causes an assignment of drive numbers to devices connected to the host adapters and the computer system. Then, swapping the assignment of drive numbers such that the desired drive is assigned a drive number 80h. The master Boot record (MBR) of the desired drive will then be accessed upon an INT 13 call, which causes the completion of the Boot process that enables an operating system (OS) stored in the desired drive.

A CD-ROM developed for Booting according to the present invention contains a Boot record as defined by the ISO but located at the end of the defined system area. The operating Code of the computer scans for a Boot record starting at the beginning sector of the CD-ROM and ending at either a default number or the volume descriptor terminator. The floppy disk Boot images are contained at the end of the primary volume space and incorporated in the primary volume space, not external to the primary volume space as in the ISO standard. Boot Code contained in the Boot record determines the size of the volume, and the proper floppy image to be used and then the actual location of the floppy image. Booting of the system then commences using the floppy image.

Advanced Industrial Control Technology, 2010Co-Authors: Peng ZhangAbstract:This chapter discusses Boot or reBoot system in a single multiprocessor makes use of central processing units (CPUs) of different types. On larger units (including mainframes), the equivalent term for Boot is initial program load and for reBoot it is reinitial program load. The Booting of an operating system works by loading a very small program into the microprocessor set and then giving that program control so that it in turn loads the entire operating system. These operations routinely involve storing the configuration table, initialization self-test Code, and loading the operating system specific to each processor. The multiprocessor system automatically transfers initialization operations from a default processor to the first alternative if the default fails, and automatically transfers initialization operations to a second alternative processor if the first fails, and so forth, depending upon how many processors are installed. The Boot Code of a microprocessor unit is a complex program set consisting mainly of BIOS and kernel, master Boot record (MBR), and Boot program.
