Collaboration in the shadow of the wall: shifting power in the Borderlands

SchoonAbstract:Border security places a heavy burden on public and private land managers affecting rural livelihoods and limiting managers’ ability to collectively act to deal with environmental issues. In the southern Arizona Borderlands, natural resource managers come together to solve complex environmental issues creating a diverse set of formal and informal institutional arrangements between state and nonstate actors. We explore the effects of the border on these collaborative institutions, as well as the managers’ views of the border, invoking theoretical work on power, institutions, literature from the burgeoning field of borderland studies, and recent work on collaboration and the common interest in civil society. In doing so, we seek to understand how a rural community that has taken center stage in national discourse copes with the border on a daily basis and how changing power differentials in the Borderlands affect a governance network. This study informs our understanding of when and where collaboration occurs, as well as our conceptualization of the border and the effects of border policy and immigration on natural resource management.

Chafing Borderlands : obstacles for science teaching and learning in preschool teacher education
'Springer Science and Business Media LLC', 2020Co-Authors: Andersson Kristina, Gullberg Annica, Danielsson, Anna T., Scantlebury Kathryn, Hussénius AnitaAbstract:This study examines preservice preschool teachers' university science education experience.The empirical data are from a research and intervention project conducted on teacher education programs at two Swedish universities. We analyzed one of the assignments completed by 111 students within a science course as well as their conversations about the assignment at a number of seminars. We combined culture contrast and thematic analysis to examine the data. The results showed a tension between the preschool culture and the university science culture. We described this tension between the boundary lines of the two cultures as a chafing borderland. These cultures do not merge, and the defined boundaries cause chafing with each other. We discuss ways of diminishing this chafing of Borderlands, potential border crossings such as caring and children as boundary objects and equalizing power imbalances.Challenging science teacher education: gender awareness in constructing knowledge of science and science teachin

Identity Production in Figured Worlds: How Some Multiracial Students Become Racial Atravesados/as
The Urban Review, 2014Co-Authors: Aurora ChangAbstract:Using Holland et al.’s (Identity and agency in cultural worlds, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, 1998 ) theory of identity and their concept of figured worlds, this article provides an overview of how twenty-five undergraduates of color came to produce a Multiracial identity. Using Critical Race Theory methodology with ethnographic interviewing as the primary method, I specifically focus on the ways in which Multiracial figured worlds operate within a racial borderland (Anzaldúa in Borderlands: La Frontera—The New Mestiza, Aunt Lute Books, San Francisco, 1987 ), an alternate, marginal world where improvisational play (Holland et al. in Identity and agency in cultural worlds, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, 1998 ) and facultad became critical elements of survival. Participants exercised their agency by perforating monoracial storylines and developed a complex process of identity production that informed their behaviors by a multifaceted negotiation of positionalities. I end by focusing on implications for urban education that can be drawn from this study.
