  • A Temperature Compensated Non-Contact Pressure Transducer Using Hall Sensor and Bourdon Tube

    Abstract:

    This paper describes the design of a simple non-contact-type pressure transducer using a Bourdon tube and a Hall sensor where the effect of atmospheric temperature is compensated. In this design, a pressure sensing Hall IC is fixed with the nonmagnetic aluminum casing of a Bourdon Gauge in front of a tiny disc-type permanent magnet rigidly attached with the free tip of the Bourdon tube. With the increase of pressure of the fluid inside the Bourdon tube, the free end along with the magnet moves toward the Hall sensor, and the magnetic field intensity due to the magnet on the Hall sensor increases with an increase of pressure. Due to this magnetic field, the outputs of the Hall sensor and the transducer circuit consisting of a differential amplifier and an instrumentation amplifier increase with the increase of pressure of the fluid inside the Bourdon tube. The transducer circuit consists of a unity gain differential amplifier circuit where the output of a second identical temperature sensing Hall IC is subtracted from the pressure sensing Hall IC output in order to compensate the effect of ambient temperature in the proposed transducer. The theoretical equations describing the operation of the transducer are derived in this paper. The static characteristic curves of a prototype design of the transducer are determined experimentally. The experimental results are reported in this paper. The characteristics curves are found to follow the theoretical equations with good repeatability and are free from ambient temperature effect.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Transmission of Bourdon Gauge reading to a remote location is very important in industry. This requires a conversion of Bourdon tube displacement into an electrical signal with the help of a suitable transducer. In the present paper, a simple low cost reluctance type pressure transducer has been developed. Its theoretical analysis has been presented in the paper. The transducer has been developed and tested in the laboratory and has been found to follow the theoretical equations. The experimental results of the observed characteristics of the transducer are reported in the paper. A very good linearity and repeatability of the data has been observed.

  • Study of a Pressure Transmitter Using an Improved Inductance Bridge Network and Bourdon Tube as Transducer

    Abstract:

    A Bourdon tube is a mechanical-type pressure sensor. It is generally used in a local pressure indicator and display. Hence, a special technique is needed to transmit to and display the reading of a Bourdon Gauge at a remote distance. In this paper, an improved inductance bridge-type technique has been developed to convert the Bourdon tube movement into an electrical current signal which can be transmitted to a remote indicator. A bent ferromagnetic wire attached to the tip of the Bourdon tube acts as a sensing element of pressure. The movement of the wire as a result of pressure variations inside an inductive pickup coil changes the self-inductance of the coil with the changes in pressure. An improved inductance bridge network has been utilized to measure the self-inductance of the coil more accurately when compared with the readings by an LCR meter. It has been observed that the variation of the self-inductance of the pickup coil as well as the variation of the transducer and transmitter outputs with pressure has very good linearity and repeatability. The necessary theoretical equations, along with the experimental results, are reported and compared in this paper.

    Bourdon tube is a mechanical type pressure sensor and the Bourdon Gauge measures Gauge pressure of a process pipe line or a process tank. But it is a local indicator and special costlier techniques are required to transmit the reading of Bourdon Gauge to a remote distance. In the present paper, a very simple inductive pick-up type technique has been developed to transmit the reading of Bourdon Gauge to a remote distance in the form of 1-5 Volt D.C. signal. This signal has been optically isolated to design a PC based pressure indicator using Labtech Note Book Pro software. The theoretical analysis of the whole technique has been presented in the paper. The instrument developed using this technique has been experimentally tested and the experimental results are reported in the paper. A good linearity and repeatability of the instrument has been observed

    O tensiômetro é o instrumento mais utilizado no campo para medida do potencial mátrico da água, pelo que a avaliação dos seus diferentes sistemas de leitura é muito importante. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar diferentes sistemas de leitura do tensiômetro tradicional em campo e justifica-se porque vai indicar a situação na qual cada sistema deve ou não ser utilizado. Foi realizado um experimento em delineamento inteiramente aleatório e em esquema fatorial 3 x 2 x 2 x 11, ou seja, três sistemas de leitura do tensiômetro (manômetro de mercúrio, vacuômetro de Bourdon e tensímetro digital com transdutor de pressão), duas profundidades de instalação (0,2 e 1,0 m), dois horários de leitura (manhã e tarde) e 11 leituras, com quatro repetições. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância pelo teste F, e as médias foram contrastadas pelo teste de Tukey, a 5 %. Os sistemas também foram analisados com base nos indicadores estatísticos índice de concordância de Willmott, erro máximo, erro absoluto médio, raiz quadrada do erro médio normalizado, coeficiente de determinação, coeficiente de massa residual e eficiência, adotando-se o tensiômetro com manômetro de mercúrio como referência. Concluiu-se que: (a) o vacuômetro de Bourdon é mais exato e eficiente que o tensímetro digital e, na ausência do manômetro de mercúrio, deve ser preferido para a medida do potencial mátrico da água no solo; (b) sempre que o vacuômetro de Bourdon for instalado ao longo do comprimento do tensiômetro sob determinada carga hidráulica, esta deve ser considerada no cálculo do potencial mátrico; e (c) o tensímetro digital superestimou os valores de potencial mátrico em comparação ao manômetro de mercúrio e vacuômetro de Bourdon.The tensiometer is the most used instrument in the field to determine the soil water matric potential, so that the evaluation of its reading systems is very important.     Abstract Bourdon tube, an indicating type pressure measuring instrument is used as a local indicator and display unit. Hence a special technique is needed to transmit and to display the reading of a Bourdon Gauge at remote location. In this paper, a modified Bourdon tube has been proposed which is capable to transmit the measured pressure information via optical domain by employing the method of electro-optic effect in Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZI). Modification in the Bourdon tube is done by fabricating an inductor coil to the arm of the Bourdon tube. The movement of the Bourdon tube is measured in terms of the voltage drop across the inductor. Voltage drop measured by digital voltmeter, across the inductor coil linearly increases (2.29 V–2.38 V) as pressure increases (0 PSI–40 PSI). Amplification of the voltage drop across the inductor coil is done by instrumentation amplifier and the Optical transmission is done by the electro-optic modulation with the help of the MZI. The voltage required for electro-optic modulation is achieved by the signal conditioning circuit which is connected with the instrumentation amplifier. It has been observed that the variation in the pressure is directly proportional to the intensity modulated light signal which has very good linearity and repeatability. The required theoretical equations along with the experimental results are reported and compared in this paper.

    Abstracts The nonstoichiometry of ZnGeP2 has been determined based on the p–T dependences measured above ZnP2–Ge samples in the temperature range of 980–1225 K by a high-sensitive and precise tensimetric static method with a quartz Bourdon Gauge. Scanning of the compositional range 49–51 mol% ZnP2 in the closed system and construction of the p–T dependences were possible due to incongruent evaporation of ZnGeP2 and formation of volatile species Zn(g), P4(g) and P2(g). The maximum homogeneity range of the solid ZnGeP2 was determined between 50.03 and 49.61 mol% ZnP2 at a temperature of 1128 K, based on the inflection points on the p–T dependences, corresponding to transitions of the three-phase (solid–solid–vapor) equilibrium to a two-phase (solid–vapor) one and vice visa. The nonstoichiometry as the overall concentration of defects is considered to gain a better insight into the defect chemistry of ZnGeP2.

    Abstract A detailed thermodynamic study of the LaS 2 –La 2 S 3 system in the temperature range 350–1000 °C was performed, starting from high quality crystals LaS 2 as the highest polysulfide in the system, and using a sensitive static tensimetric method with a quartz Bourdon Gauge and a membrane as a null-point instrument. The p S – T – x diagram obtained has shown that the phase region covering the composition between LaS 2 and La 2 S 3 , which was previously described as a single grossly nonstoichiometric phase, consists of three discrete stoichiometric phases, LaS 2.00 , LaS 1.91 , and LaS 1.76 , where compositions could be determined with an accuracy of ±0.01 f.u. The thermodynamic characteristics of evaporation of the polysulfides as well as standard heat of LaS 2 formation were calculated. The role of kinetics in the formation of ordered superstructures of sulfur-poorer polysulfides with different formal concentration of vacancies is considered.

  • Sulfur Nonstoichiometry of PrS2: A Series of New Sulfur-Deficient Phases

    Abstract A series of new sulfur-deficient polysulfides, PrS 1.900 (2) , PrS 1.846 (6) , PrS 1.766 (8) , and PrS 1.702 (7) , in addition to stoichiometric PrS 2 , has been found by the detailed study of the PrS 2 –PrS 1.5 system in the temperature range 350–1000°C. The phase individuality of the polysulfides has been proved on the basis of data of a sensitive static tensimetric method with a quartz Bourdon Gauge, X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. The vapor pressure and evaporation thermodynamic parameters of the polysulfides have been determined. Information on a structural distortion of the (S 2− 2 )-polyanionic fragment in the sulfur-deficient phases has been extracted from the Raman spectra components assigned to vibrations of this fragment.

    Abstract A detailed thermodynamic study of the SmS 2 –SmS 1.5 system in the temperature range 350–1000°C was performed using high-quality crystals of the highest Sm-polysulfide and a sensitive static tensimetric method, a quartz Bourdon Gauge with a membrane as a null-point instrument. The P – T – x diagram obtained has shown that the phase region covering the composition range SmS 2.00 –SmS 1.82 , which was previously described as a single grossly nonstoichiometric phase, consists of three discrete stoichiometric phases, SmS 1.900 , SmS 1.893 , and SmS 1.863 . The polysulfide compositions were evaluated from the tensimetric data with an accuracy of ±0.001 f. u. The thermodynamic parameters of incongruent sublimation were calculated for each polysulfide, and then the standard heats of formation were estimated for these compounds.
