    Abstract:

    Brackish-Water mollusks inhabiting the mangrove areas along the Gulf of Thailand of Surat Thani Province were investigated for distribution, abundance and natural infections. Nine families and 32 species of Brackish-Water snails were recovered from 14 sampling stations. Species belonging to the genus Ceritidea of the family Potamididae were mainly examined and Cerithidea (Cerithideopsilla) Cingulata, C. (C.) djadjariensis, and C. (Cerithidea) charbonnieri were naturally infected with 2 types of trematode cercariae, and one which was undetermined. C. (C.) cingulata had the highest infection rate (38.5%). Viewing two snail communities, the first community on the mainland and the second on Samui Island in Surat Thani Province, 28 Brackish-Water mollusk species were present on the mainland, 15 species were evident on Samui Island, and 11 snail species were common to both the mainland and Samui Island. Measurement of community similarity based on species presence revealed an index of similarity of 0.51. Concerning land use by the local people in the station areas investigated, Brackish-Water snails in Surat Thani Province are facing habitat degradation by human use.

    Abstract The shortage of drinking Water is a major problem in the South East of Spain. In these areas, it is essential to make use of Water from underground reservoirs, most of which are over exploited and suffer from saline contamination given their proximity to the sea. The desalination of Brackish Water is a means of obtaining low cost drinking Water. The method of desalination designed in this paper uses an electrodialysis system fed by photovoltaic modules that is simple, reliable, and low cost because it does not include battery storage or a battery regulator. These systems are of particular interest for isolated zones with access to wells of Brackish Water where connection to the electric grid is not possible. In this paper, the feasibility of the desalination of Brackish Water using an electrodialysis system powered by photovoltaic energy and the influence of experimental parameters has been studied. Likewise, a mathematical simulation model that allows predicting and simulating the functioning of a system of these characteristics under different meteorological conditions has been developed. The model has been applied with satisfactory results to the desalination of a NaCl solution in different experimental conditions. Data given by the mathematical simulation model was contrasted with experimental results in order to compare the reliability of the model, and good agreement was obtained. The application of this model allows the design of an electrodialysis system powered by photovoltaic energy (electrodialyzer size and the number and configuration of the PV modules), for the desalination of Brackish Water, as well as the study of its behaviour in different geographical locations.

    Abstract:

The desalination of Brackish Water is a means of obtaining low cost drinking Water. Electrodialysis is a technique based in the transport of ions through selective membranes under the influence of an electrical field. This technique has proved its feasibility and high performance in the desalination of Brackish Water, the desalting of amino acids and other organic solutions, effluent treatment and or recycling of industrial process streams and salt production. In this paper, a mathematical model for the desalination of Brackish Water through controlled potential electrodialysis has been developed. The application of this model allows: (i) to predict the behaviour of the system, (ii) to calculate the electrical energy consumption and (iii) to calculate the necessary time for successful desalination. The model has been applied with satisfactory results to the desalination of a NaCl solution in different experimental conditions. The model developed could be applied to commercial electrodialyzers (pilot/industrial plant) working in batches with recirculation and controlled potential, which is the usual mode of operation of such equipment when the requirements for treated Water are moderated.

  • Practices of Improving Brackish Water Irrigated Crops Growth

    Field experiments with 11 soil amendment agents and 4 fertilizing techniques that had been done in Jinghai county of Tianjin,China to show possibility of Brackish Water as irrigation were conducted in the present investigation.The results indicated following conclusions.Phosphorus gesso,zeolite,weathering lignite,soil structure improving dosage,soil Water conservation dosage,and their proper combinations could obviously enhance soil porosity,soil initial infiltration ratio of Water,promote soil granulation of Water sustainable aggregate,debase soil salt,Cl-ion,Na+ ion,alkali quantity AP,SSP in the Brackish Water irrigated soil.In addition,the irrigation procedure could also ameliorate soil physics,chemical environment and growth properties of Brackish Water irrigated and wheat,sugar beet,clover,and also enhance crop′s output by 15%.Using more calcium fertilizer and organic manure,dressing seed with minor elements or growth regulating agents of promoting germination and taking root,and bestowing or controlling nitrogen fertilizer during growing season properly could enhance crop′s ability of salt endurance and adaptability of Brackish Water irrigation,promote wheat and maize growth,increase biology output and economy output by 15%~30% and 15%,respectively.

  • Effects of Long Term Brackish Water Irrigation on Characteristics of Agrarian Soil

    Abstract:

    The study was carried out in Zhujia village,Jinghai county of Tianjin.Based on the continuously irrigating model test of Brackish Water(4.7g·L-1)on the shallow thick-bedded clay parting heavy loamy soil with treatments of different amendments,such as zeolite,phospho-gypsm and so on,the effects of long term Brackish Water irrigation on the physical and chemical characters of soil and the effects of amendments on the soil of long term Brackish Water irrigation were all discussed.Long term Brackish Water irrigation could worsen the chemical and physical characters of agrarian soil,such as salt gathering in surface soil,proportion of chlorine and sodium ion increasing in all soil horizons,soil initial infiltration ratio of Water decreasing year after year,etc..Short term irrigation with Brackish Water destroyed the soil aggregate.The workable amendments(such as zeolite and phospho-gypsm)can moderate these potential worsening effects and promote soil granulation.
