Synophrys: Epidemiological Study.
International journal of trichology, 2017Co-Authors: Pramod KumarAbstract:Introduction: Fusion of eyebrows above the Bridge of Nose is known as synophrys and is a normal variation. This variation is also recognized as a clinical feature of several genetic disorders, Cornelia De Lange syndrome being the commonest. Several studies, on aesthetics of face and eyebrows have been conducted, also on the role of eyebrows in emotional expression and nonverbal communication. A recent study has pointed a gene associated with synophrys. Surprisingly, however synophrys and its prevalence in the normal population is not known thus we conducted a study of its prevalence in Oman. Methods: All cases attending dermatology clinic at Saham hospital and their accompanying persons were examined for synophrys. The anonymous data was tabulated in a register and then it was transferred to computer system. Data was tabulated according to age, gender, presence of synophrys and any associated condition or genetic disorders or any chronic lifestyle disorders. It was analysed using SPSS 22 software. Results: We observed 927 subjects during the period of study. They ranged from ages of 4 months to 69 years. The males (68) outnumbered females (42). We found 110 cases (11.87%) who presented with synophrys. Discussion: The tendency of eyebrows to meet in the center of the face is known as synophrys. There is wide variation in the color, distribution and density of the eyebrow hair. Inheritance of synophrys however appears to be polygenic. Several genetic syndromes are associated with synophrys like Cornelia De Lange syndrome, which is the commonest. In our study we could not identify any genetic association in any of our cases. We studied the prevalence of synophrys in Omani population (11.87%).

Nodular granulomatous fungal skin diseases of cats in the United Kingdom: a retrospective review

Cytological and/or histological slides were reviewed and the diagnosis was based on the microscopic pattern of the inflammatory response and morphology of the causative organism. Aetiological diagNoses were hyalohyphomycosis (64 of 77 cases), phaeohyphomycosis (five of 77 cases) and dermatophytic pseudomycetoma (eight of 77 cases). All cases of hyalohyphomycosis were suspected to be alternariosis based on common features including anatomical distribution of lesions (48 of 64 cases involved the nostril and Bridge of Nose, face and ears), pattern of histological changes, morphology of the causative organism and results of fungal culture (Alternaria three of 16 and ‘saprophyte’ nine of 16 cases). Cases of phaeohyphomycosis were demographically and histologically similar to those of alternariosis, except the causative organisms were deeply pigmented brown and had a variety of morphologies that were different from Alternaria. Dermatophytic pseudomycetomas had a characteristic histological pattern including the presence of fungal microcolonies or grains within the tissue. These occurred most often on the trunk (five of eight cases) and four of eight cases were in Persian cats. These findings indicate that alternariosis is by far the most common nodular fungal skin disease of cats in the UK. Les lames de cytologie et/ou d’histologie ont ete relues et le diagnostic a ete posea partir du patron microscopique de la reponse inflammatoire et la morphologie de l’agent fongique. Les diagnostics etiologiques regroupaient des hyalohyphomycoses (64 des 77 cas), des phaeohyphomycoses (5 des 77 cas) et des pseudomycetomes dermatophytiques (8 des 77 cas). Tous les cas de hyalohyphomycoses ont ete suspectes d’etre des alternarioses vu les caracteristiques communes regroupant la localisation des lesions (48 cas sur 64 entreprenaient le chanfrein, la face et les oreilles), les modifications du patron histologique, la morphologie de l’agent causal et les resultats des cultures fongiques (Alternaria 3/16 et “saprophyte” 9/16 cas). Les cas de phaeohyphomycoses etaient demographiquement et histologiquement identiques aux cas d’alternarioses a l’exception des agents pathogenes, pigmentes en marron fonce et avec une variete morphologique differente de celle d’Alternaria. Les mycetomes dermatophytiques avaient un patron histologique caracteristique comprenant la presence de micro-colonies ou de grains fongiques au sein des tissus. Ils se developpaient le plus souvent sur le tronc (5 cas sur 8) et 4 cas sur 8 etaient des Persans. Ces resultats suggerent que l’alternariose est de loin, la dermatose fongique nodulaire la plus frequente chez les chats au Royaume-Uni. Resumen Se hizo una busqueda en la base de datos de Laboratorios IDEXX del Reino Unido entre Marzo del 2005 y Febrero del 2008 (36 meses) para investigar la presencia de lesiones granulomatosas inflamatorias en la piel de gatos con infeccion por hongos. Se revisaron las preparaciones citologicas y/o histologicas y el diagnostico se baso en el patron microscopico de la respuesta inflamatoria y la morfologia del agente causal. El diagnostico etiologico fue de hialohifomicosis (64 de 77 casos), feohifomicosis (5 de 77 casos) y pseudomicetoma dermatofitico (8 de 77 casos). Todos los casos de hialohifomicosis fueron sospechosos de ser alternariosis basado en las caracteristicas comunes, incluidas la distribucion de lesiones (48 de 64 casos afectaron la zona nasal, cara y orejas), patron de cambios histologicos, morfologia del agente causal y resultados del cultivo fungico (Alternaria en 3 de 16 casos y “saprofitos” en 9/16 casos). Los casos de feohifomicosis fueron demograficamente e histologicamente similares a los de alternariosis, con excepcion de que los agentes causales estaban pigmentados de color marron y presentaban morfologia variada diferente de Alternaria. Los pseudomicetomas dermatofiticos tenian un patron histologico caracteristico que incluia la presencia de microcolonias fungicas o granos dentro del tejido. Estos fueron mas comunes en el tronco (5 de 8 casos) y 4 de 8 casos fueron en gatos de raza Persa. Estos hallazgos indican que alternariosis es de lejos la infeccion nodular cutanea fungica mas comun en gatos del Reino Unido. Zusammenfassung Die Falle der Datenbank von IDEXX Laboratories, die aus dem Vereinigten Konigreich (UK) zwischen Marz 2005 und Februar 2008 (36 Monate) eingeschickt worden waren, wurden auf feline nodulare granulomatose Hauterkrankungen, die mit einer Pilzinfektion in Zusammenhang standen, untersucht. Es wurden zytologische und/oder histologische Praparate nochmals durchgesehen und eine DiagNose aufgrund des mikroskopischen Musters der Entzundungsreaktion und der Morphologie des verursachenden Mikroorganismus gestellt. Die atiologischen DiagNosen waren Hyalohyphomykose (64 von 77 Fallen), Phaeohyphomykose (5 von 77 Fallen) und dermatophytisches Pseudomycetom (8 von 77 Fallen). Bei allen Fallen von Hyalohyphomykose handelte es sich aufgrund der gemeinsamen Charakteristika bezuglich der anatomischen Lage der Veranderungen (bei 48 der 64 Falle waren die Nasenlocher und der Nasenrucken, das Gesicht und die Ohren betroffen), der histologischen Veranderungen, der Morphologie des auslosenden Mikroorganismus und der Ergebnisse der Pilzkultur (Alternaria 3/16 und „Saprophyten” 9/16 Fallen) vermutlich um eine Alternariose. Die Falle mit einer Phaeohyphomykose waren demographisch und histologisch denen der Alternariose ahnlich, auser dass der auslosenden Mikroorganismus tiefbraun pigmentiert war und seine Morphologie Variationen aufwies, die anders waren als bei Alternaria. Dermatophytische Pseudomycetome zeigten ein charakteristisches histologisches Muster, welches das Vorkommen von fungalen Mikrokolonien oder kornigen Strukturen im Gewebe inkludierte. Diese kamen am haufigsten am Rumpf vor (5 von 8 Fallen) und 4 von 8 Fallen traten bei Perserkatzen auf. Diese Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, dass es sich bei der Alternariose mit Abstand um die haufigste nodulare Pilzerkrankung der Haut von Katzen im Vereinigten Konigreich handelt.

The influence of non-specific anti-pruritus treatment with cyclosporine A on transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in natural atopic dermatitis in dogs.

Monitoring the progress of treatment and the assessment of the severity of disease symptoms are crucial elements of the treatment procedure. One of the common means of assessing the severity of the clinical signs of the disease is the CADESI 03. Research studies have pointed to a possibility of assessing the severity of skin lesions by means of measuring biophysical skin parameters such as TEWL, skin hydration and erythema intensity. The aim of the study was the assessment of changes in TEWL and CADESI values measured in ten different body regions during non-specific anti-pruritus treatment. The examination was performed on ten dogs with atopic dermatitis (age from 2.5 years to 7 years, mean age 3.8 years). The measurements were performed in the following body regions: the lumbar region, the right axillary fossa, the right inguinal region, the ventral abdominal region, the right lateral thorax region, the internal surface of the auricle, interdigital region of the right forelimb, cheek, Bridge of Nose and the lateral site of antebrachum. A statistically significant decrease in CADESI values was reported starting from the second week of treatment. In the case of the mean TEWL values, a fall was observed after one week of treatment in the ventral abdominal region and the interdigital region, after two weeks of treatment in the axillary fossa and the inguinal region, and after three weeks in the cheek and the lateral thorax region. There was no statistically significant decrease in TEWL values in the course of treatment in four other regions.
