  • Student Teacher Placements in Business ‐‐ Relevant or IrRelevant?
British Journal of Education & Work, 1994
    Co-Authors: David Leat
    Abstract:

Abstract Teacher placements have become increasingly common, with some determination on the part of the Teacher Placement Service to target the newly qualified and trainee teachers to gain maximum return over whole careers. This article describes a programme of group placements for Post Graduate Certificate of Education students at Newcastle University School of Education in two consecutive years. It is concluded from the evaluation by the students that whatever arrangements are made for placements that are not strictly curriculum focused a substantial number of students will fail to find them Relevant to being a teacher. It is argued that the differences in evaluation between student teachers reflects their self image as teachers. The full value of teacher placements for professional development cannot be realised unless this issue is addressed.

  • using monte carlo simulation to measure the Business Relevant impact of planning uncertainty on field service delivery
    Winter Simulation Conference, 2018
Co-Authors: Clemens Wolff, Michael Vossing, Niklas Kuhl
    Abstract:

Today, delivery of industrial maintenance services is planned under uncertainty, as, for example, the true task duration is unknown. Thus, providers rely on estimates at the stage of planning. During operations, the true task duration becomes known which results in a schedule update. This work evaluates the effects of information uncertainty on Business-Relevant performance indicators in industrial maintenance. We present a simulation model to reflect the evolution of information and the schedule revision during operations. Within a simulation experiment, we measure the Business-Relevant impact of different uncertainty levels on operations. Indeed, the findings of our research confirm the common understanding that reduced uncertainty at the stage of planning has a positive effect on service delivery. However, our research also shows that in order to achieve Business-Relevant impact in service delivery quality, the reduction of uncertainty at the stage of planning needs to reach a certain threshold.

  • Ubiquitous Computing aus betriebswirtschaftlicher Sicht
    WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK, 2003
    Co-Authors: Elgar Fleisch, Markus Dierkes
    Abstract:

This paper identifies and analyses potential Business benefits of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp). Its aim is to challenge whether the growing visibility of topics such as ubiquitous or pervasive computing, automatic identification (Auto-ID) and radio frequency identification (RFID) can be justified from a Business perspective. To do so it analyses the Business contribution of existing ubicomp applications, reconstructs their development phases, introduces the Business Relevant base-functionalities and discusses implications on the design of products, processes and services using ubicomp applications.

To do so it analyses the Business contribution of existing ubicomp applications, reconstructs their development phases, introduces the Business Relevant base-functionalities and discusses implications on the design of products, processes and services using ubicomp applications. The creation of an alternative and rather cost efficient machine-machine-relation between already established information systems and the real world things they try to manage has been identified as the main source of Business benefit. However, before Businesses can systematically leverage all potential benefits, some technical and political questions, such as creating robust solutions and solving privacy issues, have to be answered.

  • mining Business Relevant rbac states through decomposition
    Information Security Conference, 2010
Co-Authors: Alessandro Colantonio, Roberto Di Pietro, Alberto Ocello, Nino Vincenzo Verde
    Abstract:

Role-based access control is widely accepted as a best practice to effectively limit system access to authorized users only. To enhance benefits, the role definition process must count on Business requirements. Role mining represents an essential tool for role engineers, but most of the existing techniques cannot elicit roles with an associated clear Business meaning. To this end, we propose a methodology where the dataset is decomposed into smaller subsets that are homogeneous from a Business perspective. We introduce the entrustability index that provides, for a given partition, the expected uncertainty in locating homogeneous set of users and permissions that are manageable with the same role. Therefore, by choosing the decomposition with the highest entrustability value, we most likely identify roles with a clear Business meaning. The proposed methodology is rooted on information theory, and experiments on real enterprise data support its effectiveness.
