    Abstract:

    The analysis of apex predator diet has the ability to deliver valuable insights into ecosystem health, and the potential impacts a predator might have on commercially relevant species. The Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) is an endemic apex predator and one of the world's most endangered pinnipeds. Given that prey availability is vital to the survival of top predators, this study set out to understand what dietary information DNA metabarcoding could yield from 36 sea lion scats collected across 1,500 km of its distribution in southwest Western Australia. A combination of PCR assays were designed to target a variety of potential sea lion prey, including mammals, fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, and birds. Over 1.2 million metabarcodes identified six classes from three phyla, together representing over 80 taxa. The results confirm that the Australian sea lion is a wide-ranging opportunistic predator that consumes an array of mainly demersal fauna. Further, the important commercial species Sepioteuthis australis (southern Calamari squid) and Panulirus cygnus (western rock lobster) were detected, but were present in <25% of samples. Some of the taxa identified, such as fish, sharks and rays, clarify previous knowledge of sea lion prey, and some, such as eel taxa and two gastropod species, represent new dietary insights. Even with modest sample sizes, a spatial analysis of taxa and operational taxonomic units found within the scat shows significant differences in diet between many of the sample locations and identifies the primary taxa that are driving this variance. This study provides new insights into the diet of this endangered predator and confirms the efficacy of DNA metabarcoding of scat as a noninvasive tool to more broadly define regional biodiversity.

    The Gómez-Muñoz model was developed to aid the management of small-scale or artisanal fisheries and is based on interview data from fishermen and other personnel directly related to the fishery. The non-targeted and targeted Loligo vulgaris fishery in the Ría de Vigo and the Aldán Cove is explored. Eighty-one interviews were carried out. This survey yielded 38 valid interviews, which were used to estimate the parameters of the model for the period 2011-2015. Comparison between official landings and catches estimated by this model showed discrepancies varying between 41.8% and 98.4%, depending on the fish markets considered. An 82.2% decrease of the squid catches over the period 2011-2015 was recorded. The reasons for that drop as well as the sensitivity and accuracy of the model are discussed.El modelo de Gómez-Muñoz utiliza datos obtenidos a partir de entrevistas con los pescadores y otro personal relacionado con la pesquería.     Abstract:

    Background: Reproductive health covers biological and socio-cultural aspects. In the local context of East Kalimantan, the traditional culture may affect the behavior including antenatal, delivery and postpartum care, either in positive or negative manner. Objective: To explore community perspectives related to reproductive health particularly maternal health and its cultural beliefs. Methode: A qualitative research using phenomenology approach employed focus group discussion (FGD) and in-depth interview. FGD was held separately for pregnant women and community informant. In-depth interview was carried out to midwives and traditional birth attendants. The data were analyzed using interactive analyzes model. Result: The study site was Tanjung Limau Village in East Kalimantan. Village community hold their traditional beliefs for pregnant women mainly food restriction such as salted fish, Calamari, pine-apple or cempedak. Also they were not allowed to go out in the evening around "maghrib" time with certain superstitious reason. The aim of those beliefs was to avoid delivery complication, and to keep the baby as being healthy and save. Conclusion: Traditional birth attendance still played a big role in delivery process. Community in Tanjung Limau Village in East Kalimantan still applied traditional beliefs regarding maternal health, thus health providers must learn its symbolic meaning in regard to educate community and change their behavior using acceptable approach
