    Objectives This study was designed to test the effect of increased certainty of punishment on reported crime levels in CCTV target areas of Newark, NJ. The experimental strategy was designed for the purpose of overcoming specific surveillance barriers that minimize the effectiveness of CCTV, namely high Camera-to-Operator ratios and the differential response policy of police dispatch. An additional Camera Operator was deployed to monitor specific CCTV Cameras, with two patrol cars dedicated to exclusively responding to incidents of concern detected on the experimental Cameras. Methods A randomized controlled trial was implemented in the analysis. A randomized block design was used to assign each of the 38 CCTV schemes to either a treatment or control group. Schemes were grouped into pairs based upon their levels of three types of calls for service: violent crime, social disorder, and narcotics activity. Negative binomial regression models tested the effect that assignment to the treatment group had on levels of the aforementioned crime categories. Results The experimental strategy was associated with significant reductions of violent crime and social disorder in the treatment areas relative to the control areas. Incidence Rate Ratio (IRR) and Total Net Effect (TNE) values suggest that the number of crime incidents prevented was sizable in numerous instances. The experiment had much less of an effect on narcotics activity. Conclusions Overall, the findings support the hypothesis that the integration of CCTV with proactive police activity generates a crime control benefit greater than what research suggests is achievable via “stand-alone” Camera deployment, particularly in the case of street-level crime.

    Over the past 20 years, laparoscopic colectomy has become a well-established technique in the surgical armamentarium of colorectal operations, with proven reductions in postoperative pain, time to return of bowel function, and length of hospital stay. After early concerns over its oncologic effects, large prospective, multicenter trials have proven its safety in colorectal adenocarcinoma, with equivalence in nodal harvest, recurrence rates, disease-free survival, and overall survival. Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy in particular is a relatively accessible technique which may be performed by a single surgeon and an assistant/Camera Operator; this operation serves as an excellent method to develop laparoscopic skills for more complicated colorectal procedures. In this article, we describe the technical aspects of our approach to laparoscopic right hemicolectomy, which utilizes a medial-to-lateral, no-touch technique and either an intracorporeal or extracorporeal anastomosis.

    In this paper we focus on the effect of different interface designs on the performance and cognitive workload of sensor Operators (SO) during a target detection task in a simulated environment. Functional near-infrared (fNIR) spectroscopy is used to investigate whether there is a relationship between target detection performance across three SO interfaces and brain activation data obtained from the subjects’ prefrontal cortices that are associated with relevant higher-order cognitive functions such as attention, response selection and decision making. The preliminary findings of the study suggest that brain regions in the vicinity of medial frontal gyrus of the right hemisphere respond differentially to the cognitive workload induced by different interfaces.

  • TrackLine: Refining touch-to-track Interaction for Camera Motion Control on Mobile Devices

    Controlling a film Camera to follow an actor or object in an aesthetically pleasing way is a highly complex task, which takes professionals years to master. It entails several sub-tasks, namely (1) selecting or identifying and (2) tracking the object of interest, (3) specifying the intended location in the frame (e.g., at 1/3 or 2/3 horizontally) and (4) timing all necessary Camera motions such that they appear smooth in the resulting footage. Traditionally, Camera Operators just controlled the Camera directly or remotely and practiced their motions in several repeated takes until the result met their own quality criteria. Automated motion control systems today assist with the timing and tracking sub-tasks, but leave the other two to the Camera Operator using input methods such as touch-to-track, which still present challenges in timing and coordination. We designed a refined input method called TrackLine which decouples target and location selection and adds further automation with even improved control. In a first user study controlling a virtual Camera, we compared TrackLine to touch-to-track and traditional joystick control and found that the results were objectively both more accurate and more easily achieved, which was also confirmed by the subjective ratings of our participants.
