  • The Chinese World Order in Historical Perspective
    China and the World, 2019
    Co-Authors: Prasenjit Duara
    Abstract:

I seek to grasp the genealogy of China’s Belt and Road (BRI) in relation both to the imperial Chinese world order and the historical sequence of forms of global domiNation, i.e., modern imperialism, the ‘imperialism of Nation-states’ during the inter-war and Cold War period as well as the post-Cold War notion of ‘soft power’. While we may think of BRI as poised uncertainly between the logics of the older imperial Chinese order and the more recent logic impelled by Capitalist Nation-states, there are significant novelties in the new Chinese order, mostly in relation to debt, the environment and digital technology which constitute new realms of power not easily dominated by a hegemon.

  • marx and engels dutch marxism and the model Capitalist Nation of the seventeenth century
    Science & Society, 1997
    Co-Authors: M Van Der Linden
    Abstract:

Although neither Marx nor Engels attempted a systematic analysis of the development of merchant capitalism in 17th-century Holland, both did mention this model Capitalist Nation in their writings. Their analysis stressed that Dutch capitalism was based on the exploitation of non-Capitalist forms of production, and that the decline of the Dutch Republic in the 18th century was the history of the subordiNation of commercial capital to industrial capital. Since the turn of the century Dutch Marxists have contributed substantially to this classical analysis, paying much attention to the Dutch Revolt against Spain, which they considered as an early bourgeois revolution led by aristocrats. Nowadays Marxist historians seem to be divided as to the nature of the Dutch Republic: was it a feudal business economy or the first appearance of a full-fledged capitalism? A necessary conclusion seems to be that the realities of Dutch history call for a non-unilinear Marxist interpretation.

  • Canada's workers movement: Uneven developments
    Labour Le Travail, 2020
Co-Authors: Michael Goldfield, Bryan D. Palmer
    Abstract:

WITHIN THE CONTEXT of North America, Canada’s economy, politics, and labour movement, as well as the country’s diverse cultures, have a dual, almost divided, character. On the one hand, they exhibit highly independent and distinctive features; on the other, they are deeply entwined with — indeed operating in the shadow of and influenced greatly by — the imperialist colossus to the south. An advanced Capitalist Nation in its own right, and one with an imperialist arm reaching into the Caribbean and elsewhere, Canada nevertheless remains very much within an ‘American’ sphere of influence.

  • A Critique of Immanuel Wallenstein’s World System Theory in The Modern World System.
IOSR Journal of Humanities and Social Science, 2016
Co-Authors: Augustine Ejioforonyishi, Chukwunonso Valentine Amoke.
    Abstract:

-The Modern World System Capitalist Agriculture and The Origin of The European World Economy, is Immanuel Wallenstein‟s historical exposition of the structure and character of the prevailing global sociopolitical and economic relation. He made an insightful note on the exploitative nature of this relation. And the inevitable consequences are highlighted. The claims in this study are by no means original but by adding the semi-periphery in this analysis he has expanded the existing theory of global political economy from bimodal to trimodal structure. However, the strength of Wallenstein study lies not in the originality of its theory but on the fervent and pugnacious contention of the study that the contemporary global socio-political and economic composition would suffocate development in the periphery Nations, undermine liberal democracy and promote global inequality. And ultimately favour the rich Capitalist Nation over the poor ones if the present trend is allowed to continue.
