Inheritance of Carboxin Resistance in a European Field Isolate of Ustilago nuda.

ThomasAbstract:ABSTRACT Two Carboxin-resistant field isolates of Ustilago nuda from Europe were crossed with a Carboxin-sensitive field isolate from North America. Meiotic tetrads isolated from germinating F1 teliospores of one of the hybrids were tested for Carboxin resistance and mating type. Carboxin resistance was shown to be controlled by a single gene (CBX1R), because a 1:1 segregation of Carboxin resistance was observed in all 27 tetrads. Tetrad analysis indicated that the loci for Carboxin resistance (Cbx1) and mating type (MAT1) segregate independently but may be located on the same chromosome. Tetrad analysis was not possible with the F1 hybrid of he other field isolate, and its resistance cannot yet be attributed to CBX1R. Carboxin resistance was qualitatively dominant to sensitivity in vitro, as demonstrated by triad analysis of germinating F1 teliospores. Carboxin resistance was not found within the 1988-1989 Canadian population (260 field isolates tested) of U. nuda, nor within a worldwide population collected before the use of Carboxin (96 field isolates tested). Efficacy of Trichoderma viride in controlling the loose smut of wheat caused by Ustilago segetum var. tritici at multilocation.

Srivastava, Rashmi Aggarwal, Man Singh BeniwalAbstract:The application of Trichoderma viride on loose smut infected seeds ( Ustilago segetum var. tritici ) or in soil, reduced the smutted tillers up to 17.5 per cent. However, treatment of T. viride alone was not as effective as Carboxin seed treatment in the control of loose smut. Maximum reduction was observed in dry seed treatment with antagonist as well as seed treatment plus soil application. The effect of T. viride was more prominent in the seed lot having lower level of loose smut infection. Application of T. viride along with half dose of Carboxin was however. found as effective as full recommended dose of Carboxin (2.5 g/kg of seed). Soaking of seeds in tap water for 24h also reduced tbe incidence of loose smut by 15.4 per cent.

Fiori & Paol.) caused by Ustilago segetum (Pers.) Roussel var tritici Jensen [ = U. nuda (Jens.) Rostr. var tritici Schaf.]. The new fungicide was used as dry seed treatment, along with 2 recommended fungicides, viz Carboxin and carbendazim, @ 0.2,0.25 and 0.3%. G 696@0.25 and 0.3% proved significantly superior in controlling the disease (giving respectively 95 and 98% control) to the other treatments, except Carboxin@0.3% which was on a par with it in effectiveness.

Fiori & Paol.) at multilocations against loose smut of wheal caused) by Ustilago segetumn (Pers.) Roussel in comparison with the Carboxin, Carboxin + thiram and carbendazim. The efficacy of new molecule thifluzarmide @ 1.0 ml/kg seed was found at par with the recommended dose of Carboxin and carbendazitn in controlling the disease compared with the untreated check.
