Groups of rats were orally administered with Cardamom oil, Cardamom resin, and standard compounds of the volatile Cardamom oil fraction as a single dose. Paw inflammation was measured at hourly intervals for 6 h post-carrageenan administration (i.p.). In another set, groups of rats were maintained for 10 days on diets containing Cardamom oil and Cardamom resin, and paw edema was induced at the end. Among the Cardamom fractions administered orally, aqueous and acetone extracts showed a higher degree of inhibition (31 and 30%) compared to ibuprofen (23%). Cardamom oil exhibited 11% inhibition in the first hour, while 1,8-cineole produced 9.5% inhibition in the second hour. In the dietary study, de-oiled Cardamom powder showed 9% inhibition at the first hour, while Cardamom powder and Cardamom oil were not effective in inhibiting the inflammation. De-oiled Cardamom powder (obtained by acetone extraction) was effective indicating that non-volatile compounds present in this resin fraction are responsible for the anti-inflammatory effect. Thus, the components of the non-volatile (resin) portion of Cardamom viz., polyphenols, fatty acids, and sterols are responsible for the anti-inflammatory potential of Cardamom seeds.

Anti-hypercholesterolemic influence of the spice Cardamom (Elettaria Cardamomum) in experimental rats.

The anti-hypercholesterolemic effect of Cardamom was evaluated in Wistar rats by inducing hypercholesterolemia with a high cholesterol diet for 8 weeks. Dietary interventions were made with (a) Cardamom powder (50 g.kg−1), (b) Cardamom oil (3 g.kg−1) (equivalent to 50 g.kg−1 Cardamom), and (c) de-oiled Cardamom powder (50 g.kg−1). RESULTS Significant reduction in the blood total cholesterol (31%) and LDL cholesterol (44%) was observed by oral administration of Cardamom oil in hypercholesterolemic rats accompanied by a marked decrease in serum triglycerides by 42%. Cholesterol content of cardiac muscle was beneficially lowered by 39% with administration of Cardamom oil in hypercholesterolemic rats. Liver triglycerides were reduced by 33%. Incorporation of Cardamom oil/powder in diet did not alter the feed consumption in rats. Compromised activities of hepatic antioxidant enzymes under hypercholesterolemic situation were generally countered by dietary Cardamom. Treatment with de-oiled Cardamom as well as Cardamom oil countered the diminished activity of catalase in hypercholesterolemic animals. Cardamom also enhanced the activity of heart superoxide dismutase in hypercholesterolemic situation. Ascorbic acid concentration in circulation was significantly increased by dietary Cardamom or its fractions in hypercholesterolemic situation. CONCLUSIONS This animal study has thus established the potential of Cardamom oil in restoring the alteration in lipid homeostasis in conditions of hypercholesterolemia. Significant reduction of atherogenicity index by dietary intervention with Cardamom powder and Cardamom oil indicates the potential cardio protective effect of Cardamom.

Studies on the health benefits of Cardamom in diabetic patients are very limited. Thus, this study is designed to determine the effect of Cardamom supplementation on blood lipids and glycemic indices in type 2 diabetic patients. To investigate the mechanism of Cardamom effect on blood glucose and lipid levels, serum sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) was assessed. Results In a parallel, double-blind randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 83 overweight or obese type 2 diabetic patients were randomly allocated into an intervention (n = 41) or a control group (n = 42). The intervention and the placebo group received 3 g of green Cardamom or rusk powder, respectively for 10 weeks. Physical activity level, dietary intake, anthropometric measurements (weight, height and waist circumference), glycemic indices [glucose, insulin, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)], blood lipids [triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c)] and SIRT1 levels were measured. Body mass index and homeostasis model assessment as an index of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were calculated before and after intervention. Compared to the control group, a significant decrease in serum HbA1C (-0.4%), insulin (-2.8 µIU dL-1 ), HOMA-IR (-1.7) and TG (-39.9 mg dL-1 ), and an increase in SIRT1 (2.3 ng mL-1 ) was observed in Cardamom group. There were no significant changes in serum TC, HDL-c and LDL-c levels between the two groups before and after adjustment for potential confounders including glyclaside dose, duration of disease and weight. Conclusion Our results showed that Cardamom can decrease HbA1c, insulin level, HOMA-IR and TG level via increase in SIRT1 concentration in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Eighty overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes will be selected. They will be randomly assigned to receive 3 g/d green Cardamom or placebo for 10 weeks. The socio demographic, physical activity and 24-h food recall questionnaires will be collected for each subject. Weight, height and waist circumference will be measured. Determination of blood glucose, lipid profile, and oxidative stress biomarkers including serum levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in red blood cells will be performed. The homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index and the quantitative insulin-sensitivity check index (QUICKI) will be calculated. Also, serum levels of irisin, and Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) will be measured. This trial will be the first study to explore the effects of green Cardamom supplementation on glycemic control, lipid profile and oxidative stress in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Cardamom is one of this spices; therefore, this study is designed to determine the effect of Cardamom supplementation on serum lipids, glycemic indices, and blood pressure in pre-diabetic women. Eighty overweight or obese pre-diabetic women were randomly allocated to two groups. The intervention group received 3 g of green Cardamom and the placebo group received 3 g of rusk powder for 2 months. The physical activity level, dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, Blood pressure, fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), insulin, body mass index (BMI), insulin resistance, and insulin sensitivity were measured before and after intervention. After intervention, mean TC (p = 0.02) and LDL-C (p = 0.01) significantly decreased and insulin sensitivity (p = 0.03) increased in the Cardamom group. In the control group, mean HDL-C (p = 0.02) significantly decreased after the study. We observed no significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, glycemic indices, and serum lipids values in the Cardamom group compared to the placebo group. Green Cardamom supplementation may have a protective effect on HDL-C level in pre-diabetic subjects. The physical activity level, dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, Blood pressure, fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), insulin, body mass index (BMI), insulin resistance, and insulin sensitivity were measured before and after intervention. After intervention, mean TC (p = 0.02) and LDL-C (p = 0.01) significantly decreased and insulin sensitivity (p = 0.03) increased in the Cardamom group. In the control group, mean HDL-C (p = 0.02) significantly decreased after the study. We observed no significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, glycemic indices, and serum lipids values in the Cardamom group compared to the placebo group. Green Cardamom supplementation may have a protective effect on HDL-C level in pre-diabetic subjects. It improves some blood parameters in these subjects; however, its effects are not different from placebo. Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials, IRCT2014060817254N2 . Registered 2 September 2014.
