However, incorporating concepts of sex-specific analysis in basic research is largely neglected, introducing bias into translational findings, clinical concepts and drug development. Research funding agencies recently approached these issues but implementation of policy changes in the scientific community is still limited, probably due to deficits in concepts, knowledge and proper methodology. This expert review is based on the EUGenMed project (www.eugenmed.eu) developing a roadmap for implementing sex and gender in biomedical and health research. For sake of clarity and conciseness, examples are mainly taken from the Cardiovascular Field that may serve as a paradigm for others, since a significant amount of knowledge how sex and oestrogen determine the manifestation of many Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) has been accumulated. As main concepts for implementation of sex in basic research, the study of primary cell and animals of both sexes, the study of the influence of genetic vs. hormonal factors and the analysis of sex chromosomes and sex specific statistics in genome wide association studies (GWAS) are discussed. The review also discusses methodological issues, and analyses strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in implementing sex-sensitive aspects into basic research.

Here we report the preparation of a monoclonal antibody against human MGP and its use in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The intra-assay and interassay coefficients of variation in serum samples were 5.4% and 12.6%, respectively, and the lower detection limit was 8.5% of the normal serum value. Individual within-day variations were <11% and did not show a distinct circadian pattern. Day-to-day variations in fasting morning samples were <8%. In a first explorative survey, serum MGP concentrations were found to be significantly increased in patients with severe atherosclerosis, whereas these values were normal in those with low bone mass and osteoporosis. This finding is consistent with the high MGP mRNA expression observed in atherosclerotic vessels and plaques. More elaborate studies are required to assess the potential clinical utility of this newly developed assay.

Applications of three-dimensional printing technology in the Cardiovascular Field

Meanwhile, the application of this technology has reached beyond the engineering Field and expanded to almost all disciplines, including medicine. There has been much research on the medical applications of 3-D printing in neurosurgery, orthopedics, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, tissue engineering, as well as other Fields. Because of the complexity of the Cardiovascular system, the application of this technology is limited and difficult, as compared to other disciplines, and thus there is much room for future development. Many of the difficulties associated with this technology must be overcome. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that 3-D printing technology will benefit patients with Cardiovascular diseases in the near future.

In the late 1990s, leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs) were introduced in therapy for asthma and later on, approved for the relief of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and urticaria. In addition, it has been shown that LTRAs may have a potential role in preventing atherosclerosis progression. Purpose The aims of this short review are to delineate the potential Cardiovascular protective role of a LTRA, montelukast, beyond its traditional use, and to foster the design of appropriate clinical trials to test this hypothesis. Results and Conclusions What it is known about leukotriene receptor antagonists? •Leukotriene receptor antagonist, such as montelukast and zafirlukast, is used in asthma, COPD, and allergic rhinitis. • Montelukast is the most prescribed CysLT_1 antagonist used in asthmatic patients. • Different in vivo animal studies have shown that leukotriene receptor antagonists can prevent the atherosclerosis progression, and have a protective role after cerebral ischemia. What we still need to know? • Today, there is a need for conducting clinical trials to assess the role of montelukast in reducing Cardiovascular risk and to further understand the mechanism of action behind this effect.
